New Uniforms (please!!)

Not to sound overtly defensive over the current Kings logo, but I want to provide some logistics as to how that logo came about (and this is just from my own observation and not some "behind the scenes" information behind the brain trust that created the emblem).

First off, the inspiration for the "homeplate." That design originated back to the 60s. The Kings had a shield banner that they had used on promotional items.

220px-Los_Angeles_Kings_Logo_1967-1982.svg.png

In the 80s they made a different variation of the same logo, which was the precursor to the "chevy logo."

From what I personally recall reading, the Kings were planning on changing their colors, their logo, and uniforms before they had Gretzky. That was all set way before the trade was officially announced, and the "chevy logo" was born and a new era began, and the Kings set league records in merchandise sales and doubled NHL merch sales with the introduction of the black and silver sweaters.

The Kings' logo also drew inspiration from the Dodgers. Everyone knows the Dodgers "LA" logo.

Obviously they aren't going to mimic the same design, and so the Kings created their own version of that and wanted to make that a focal point of the logo. Combine all of those elements together, and you get this:

nhl_kings_logo_576.gif

Is it the best logo in the league? No, not at all. But is it the worst in the league? No, I wouldn't go that far. It's just average. Yes, I get the meaning behind the logo and its inspiration and story behind it, but it just falls flat to me. You look at all of the original six logos and they are all timeless. Although the Rangers wear a script logo on their uniforms, their team logo is another timeless classic.

I understand the pencil point shield or "homeplate" is supposed to be a coat of arms, and they had another coat of arms logo that didn't last too long because I think it just looked silly with the lion with sunglasses, stick, and puck. BTW, there are five hockey sticks within the logo: two crossing the main logo, the two crossing sticks used for the top design of the crown, and the hockey stick being held by the lion.

I'm glad that they ditched that logo rather quickly, but I do believe there was potential for the Kings to do more with that design than what they ended up presenting to us when they unveiled the purple and black in 1998 at Universal City Walk. I think if they used a better crest than the one worn on the current set of uniforms, there would be less fans complaining about the Kings' jerseys.

Our logo could use some work, but I think we look damn sharp in our actual designs.

The current Kings jerseys are top 10 in the league. I've been a Kings fan since 86 and the only one I bought was a black Chevy design McSorley one because the purple and gold were pretty ugly and always reminded me of how crappy they were. Same with the entire decade of the the 2000's, I would never buy one of those because they were ugly and the teams always sucked. Just bad vibes. I already have 3 of these ones now and I got them before we won the Cup. They are slick, simple, and no longer make the Kings look like clowns when they step on the ice. And now, they are Stanley Cup winning jerseys, and should be our jerseys forever like Chicago and Detroit because it is a symbol of success.

Top 10? I wouldn't push it.:shakehead

Your rival won the cup with these.

Symbol of success? Only if you make it out to be. I sure as hell wouldn't want my team to be wearing those for the rest of it's existence. :help:

I still feel these are far more slick and stylized. Sure you may not have won a cup in those, but you still can. You sure had a nice run when Gretzky was in town. Plus, how many teams can rep that colour scheme so well? Can't think of any for this league.

Just posting what I genuinely feel.

I think our set is top 10 in the league as well. The definite better ones are obviously original 6, Islanders, Phoenix (especiallly away) and maybe Philadelphia and Buffalo.

Next time you come on the LA board, merely reference the Ducks jerseys or have the image be the jersey by itself...none of us want to come on here and see Captain Rogaine hoisting the Cup.

C'mon now.

I think I speak for every Kings fan on this board - past, present, and future - that we are so very appreciative that you decided to add to this thread by posting that image of that ****** bag hoisting the cup.

No offense.... but F off.

It doesn't matter what the team is wearing. What counts is the talent underneath the sweaters.

I don't know. As I said, it really doesn't matter. I really couldn't care less. The uniforms are okay...the home plate logo lacks imagination, but what ****. It's here to stay, we got a SC banner up there with the logo, so I give it 10 years before they start tinkering with it again.

Funny that you write "no offense" then "F off" in the same sentence. That's pretty offensive, actually.

And I don't get all the Ducks hate. I really don't. Ducks fans are probably the most friendly in the league. Every time I go to a Ducks/Kings game, I get into friendly conversations with the Ducks' fans. Some even salute us when the Kings score a goal.

I can confirm that, the changes were already made and approved by the league long before the trade.

As a matter of fact, its just common sense. The trade occurred on August 9, just two months set before the season was to begin. It's pretty obvious that they wouldn't have made such drastic changes to the uniform in such a short amount of time and then get approval as well.

Ron, majority of their fans hate us. I have to hate them back.
It's also bad when those same Ucks fans insult you right and left working for THE Salvation Army (this November will mark 11 years with them)... I have to choose my spots to get even with them though...

This incident was about three or four years ago when this extremely irate Ucks fan in drag kept on me like I was still in umpire gear...and I had to nail her BIG TIME... It was when she was telling her friends about two weeks later how proud she was that she was going to night school...and I yelled back with the same enthusiasm she gave her friends "With your face...I wouldn't show it in daylight either..."... For some strange reason...she never bothered me again...

I love the jersey. We won the cup with them and black and white is very distinctive and clean.

And why is that? Did he think the word purple was too feminine or something?

May have been that Cooke wanted the team to have it's own identity when it came to colors. During that time there was a pretty good football team in Minnesota with the nickname Purple People Eaters.

Also, I am sure he was trying to promote the Forum which was a brand new arena.

Hey Ron, the middle finger is not really a salute. :)

Maybe my experiences aren't the same as y'all.

I still think Detroit fans are the worst in the league. Vancouver fans aren't all that much better, but lately their team has humbled their hubris mightily.

Yes please, if you're the person in the Darth Vader costume own it.

I want to shake that man's hand.

It also one ups what Face Wash wore to the parade

It doesn't one-up my highlighter shoes though

I think we change our uniforms too damn much. Do I like the current set not really. Mostly because of the logo, and no hem strip on the home.
I like some of the concepts out there way better, but I would rather we stick with our current set for a at least a decade before making significant changes.
One of the things I liked about our old jerseys was the Los Angeles written at the bottom. Was unique to us.

The rangers is seen timeless because it has been relatively unchanged. If the kings would have kept their original crown logo all of these years I imagine it would bee seen as timeless as well.

I don't know about that. Look at the original 6 logos and compare it to the 6 expansion teams that were introduced in '67. I don't think the Kings' original logo holds up.

Of those '67 expansion teams, the only timeless logos that still withstand today are the Flyers, Blues, and Penguins. It's also funny to see that 5 of the 6 expansion teams were using yellow in their color scheme. The Kings crown is certainly a classic look, but those yellow uniforms were hideous and by the late 80s they just looked very dated. What worked for the Lakers didn't work as well for the Kings.
