picks are useful as they can be used to trade for immediate help. Trading Severson doesn't seem like a good move though.

We can spend:
Cap: $82,500,000 + LTIR: $4,125,000 = $86,625,000

Current total expenditure: $83,490,887 (includes everything - Johansson, LTIR and buyouts)
Subtracting from what we can spend:
Cap Space: $3,134,113

Soooo... if we trade away Johnsson:
Johansson cap hit: $2,275,000
Cap space after trade: $5,409,113

Add to that whatever other asset we send over... say it's Holtz and Muk. Since Muk isn't on our roster yet, it's just Holtz:
Holtz: $894,167

Total free space:
$6,303,280

Meier: $6,000,000
Cap Excess: $303,280

We don't need *ANY* retention. We *MAY* ask for retention so we can make a minor move - depth D, depth C, etc, but we don't NEED it.

That's also assuming the move is made at the deadline and not earlier. If it was done earlier we'd need to have retention no?

I'd be shocked if any team puts as much into its second tier guys as the blue chippers but to openly admit it is a bit surprising to me. He's a teen so maybe a bit undiplomatic and maybe has a different outlook coming from Europe.
such a statement is unheard of in a communistic country like the us.

It would have to be a Sev trade. I wonder if they talked to him about possibly trading Severson if they are out of the playoff picture before the season and that's what he's referring to. I'm still on board with trading Severson at the deadline if we are pushing for the playoffs IF you think Nemec can step in and provide reliable 3rd pair minutes.

I just hate the idea of letting a valuable asset walk for nothing in the offseason when the roster is as young as it is. Having both Severson and Graves walk at free agency would hurt when you could get solid returns for both.
not making the playoffs would hurt much more.

Have not been in this thread for a few days. I think you are slightly high. The Devils did not get right to $82,5 to open the season

No that’s just good old fashioned tough hockey. Keep your head up rookie. And I know hockey because I once played in a high school game
So punching someone who is prone on the ice is "good old fashioned tough hockey"?

Or is this another "I'm being sarcastic" post again? :sarcasm:

(btw, I know this was a sarcastic post but I wanted to fulfill my "clueless" obligations)

There was a main boards post about an obvious cheap shot and some mouth breather called it good tough hockey or something equally clueless. He justified it because he had played hockey somewhere at some point. It’s amazing how many people don’t understand where to draw the line or what actually qualifies as hockey.

wow...seriously?

Was it pertaining to this or something else?

With Luke and Nemec being possibly available at the end of the year, maybe you trade Sev’s. (Are they even 1/2 on the depth chart?)

There are teams who are desperate for defenseman. I was listening to a podcast that suggest the Leafs would give-up 1 or 2 prospects and a 1st. They are all in. If you got Knies and a 1st, you can flip them for Timo without having to mortgage the future. You can trade the first and Holtz to the Sharks and still draft in the first round and you added a big middle 6 prospect. You can give our young guys a shot in the playoffs.

This is all pending if the front office feels like we can make some noise. The Devils being in second place and having stellar prospects is super dope.

You can't expect Luke or Nemec to step in come playoff time and replace a NHL veteran.
