I have the same opinion there lol so that might be why I don't see it as a problem. In the context of a double standard, I'll give you that.

On the other hand, people should have thick enough skin that being playfully made fun of isn't worth pearl clutching over. I'd say 1000x times that for a professional athlete.

I just have to laugh because one of the popular ideas that pops up once in a while is a feed that isn't PG and has the mic's on so you can hear the players chirp each other. But someone is called fat and this board is outraged.
You think that Edwards was being playful?

Come on...smdh...GMAFB

Independent of what he says, I just find his voice annoying. And it’s not the New England accent, as I generally like the sound of that.

WRT this controversy…. Whatever.

I'm a Bruins fan who can't stand Jack Edwards.

But this? Really? I mean, REALLY?

Hope you make it brother, really do.

I like Edwards personally.

Is he a huge homer? Sure, but he's the local Bruins announcer for a Boston sports channel, what do people expect.

One thing that is overlooked is the fact that he's one of, if not the most knowledgeable hockey commentator out there. Where some local announcers are struggling to pronounce names, Edwards will tell you the players backstory and his stats of the top of his head. There is also nobody that heaps more praise on opposing teams and players than Edwards. He always, always gives credit where it's due and has a ton of good things to say about opposing players and teams constantly.

Idk how you can even say this. He never knows the rules to anything and just last week he was calling opposing players by their jersey numbers.

The comment itself isn't good but hardly anything to get too twisted up about. But Jack Edwards is very unprofessional, a terrible PbP man and degrades the league. Great Bruin fan who shouldn't have a microphone in front of him to distract from him cheering on his team. Sounded a bit drunk and one day he'll say something that tips the scales.

I wish NHL broadcasts didn't have such regional flavour. Call the game enthusiastically, give every player and team their props and don't be a fan, be a pro - too much to ask?

He should probably stop drinking before going on TV then. He has sounded drunk plenty of times in the past but it seems to be much more common this season.
IMO he isn't drinking. A man I used to work with had the same speech issues...after he had a small stroke. I believe it is something medical.

He shouldn't get fired over this but if you guys can't see how this is unprofessional I don't know what to say. I think the term "fat shaming" is ridiculous but this is a professional athlete he's in better shape than 99% of the people on the planet and just going off on someone for being fat is douchy AF. This isn't the same as never being able to criticize people that are actually overweight and pointing out it would be healthier to lose weight.

Sounded like nothing but Pat Maroon is a big boy jokes and he ends it with appreciation for his Cups. Complete nothing burger. Outrage culture these days is the bigger controversy.
If people were more intelligent, your comment would be acclaimed....the far greater danger we are facing is dangerous snowflake generation we have raised and those same people that want to throw people into the Camps for the great crime of freedom of thought and expression......and that stupidity has sadly flowed into our Hockey and indeed all of sports.....

Just to play devil's advocate, if you think it's freedom of speech to be able to call him fat, isn't it freedom of speech to call Edwards unprofessional? It should go both ways. You're so concerned with 'thought and expression' being questioned, but you're here questioning people that disagree with you.

And lol at the whole 'camps' thing.

I would love to listen to a telecast of Jack Edwards and Derek Sanderson (especially when Derek was intoxicated). Hell, throw Johnny Most in there for some unrelated bashing of the Pistons.

Terrible broadcasting, both the premise of the comment and delivery is awkward and ridiculous, as well as distracting from the game.

With that said, I can't believe I've heard this referred to as "body shaming"... the actual comment is pretty tame, as far as being offensive, just super dumb.
