Just watched the clip of Maroon on Spittin Chiclets.

Whitney and Biz doing the same thing to Jack. Making fun of him, starting rumors about him smoking all the weed, etc. What a joke. It's ok for them to harp on a guy? Biz is on a national broadcast...

Liked Maroons response to it though, he didn't bite on any of it.

You don’t know the difference between saying something on air during a game and a podcast?

Pretty impressive lack of common sense, I must say.

But also, Whitney and Biz should not be the bar for professionalism. That speaks volumes about the level of quality we get from Jack. It’s dogshit. Always has been. Always will be. Dude f***ing blows. I’d rather listen to Leah Hextall analyze a ping pong match than Jack say anything.

I wouldn't be surprised that if across all the different social media platforms that Spittin Chicklets is seen by more people than the Bruins game. Its not 2003 anymore

That was it! Knowing Jack Edwards, expected him to call him “Patrick Macaroon” or something like that.

So Maroon is such a man child that he actually managed to make Edwards look like the good guy at the end of this?

Edwards’ joke was probably inappropriate and he kept at it for a cringeworthy period of time. But spend thousands and thousands of hours talking on live TV during your career and you’d say plenty of stupid stuff as well. Maroon has made $16M+ playing a game for over a decade and has won three Cups; you think he’d have a little thicker skin and be able to laugh this off. He’s a clown

it's better for kids to see, hear, and experience bad things when they are young.
that prepares them for handling bad stuff when they get older.

it's the single reason why so many young adults today are having problems dealing with life.

the more you shelter youth from real life, they more the can't handle early adulthood.

Except hearing this crap from a “respectable” broadcaster does more to normalize it than to teach a lesson.

Edwards took his stab behind a monitor... Maroon then made edwards look like a clown and made a local charity happy.

He not only laughed it off, he proved to society that you can change a shitty event into something special.

Maybe look in the mirror before you call someone a clown.

It's a difference in where they're placed in the larger sports media context. Podcasts are meant for off-color, even off-the-wall commentary. It's long format, and it takes a lot to keep people engaged for 2+ hours with nothing else happening other than guys talking. I mean that's why I don't ever listen to podcasts. There's very few people on this planet I want to listen to for 2+ hours.

Jack Edwards is a play-by-play guy. Most people consider it a job well done for a PBP guy if after the game no-one remembers him. It's a role that is understood to be more basic service provider than entertainer. It's not Jack Edwards' job to get you interested in a Bruins game. You're not watching because of Jack Edwards. The product is on the ice, and that's the star of the show. Jack Edwards knowingly violates these unwritten rules of sports broadcasting by refusing to just stick to commenting on the play as it happens. That's why there's a Jack Edwards thread every few months and there's so many strong reactions to it. His style doesn't fit the general public expectation regarding what his job actually is.

Sounds like you're just use to listening to really dull and uninterested PBP guys.

Are they though? Are any of us truly happy?

Dont clowns make people happy?

Does that make Pat Maroon a clown because he made a group of people happy? I think it makes him an over achieving clown.

Yes.

That's an interesting comment right there. Its one that exists because of the corporate cookie-cutter idea of what sports broadcasting should be today - vanilla, empty and let the special effects, ice girls and fireworks provide the entertainment.

What I miss is radio. When a broadcaster had to actually describe what he was seeing because you couldn't see it. That was a time when another team was coming to town to fight and play hockey. Politically incorrect storytelling was part of the whole thing. Rambling helped us understand what was actually going on. It was an art form. When Don Cheery was booted from CBC I missed his stories...when he got excited and giggled and said, "OK, let me set this up..."

I'm not defending anyone or anything. I miss the story tellers in hockey and hearing about what it was actually like. Ron MacLean is painfully trying to keep that tradition alive and our connection to the past and where we came from. Gordie Howe getting a leather Wings jacket as a signing bonus and sleeping under the bleachers at Olympia with the rats the morning before his first practice...

So yea...Jack is stuck in time. Who cares. We don't. Just leave the frig him alone and let him enjoy his slide.

Spending 30 seconds talking about how fat someone is while the game is on has nothing to do with describing the game or storytelling.

Lightning security should have falsely detained him for trespassing so he couldn't broadcast the game.

That 1 game without Jack Edwards would have been worth more than a 60k donation towards whatever food abuse cause Pat chose
