Jersey here, what do you want for Jankowski?
Late draft pick? I don't think the Preds would be interested in dealing him for what he would actually return, although I personally would welcome it.

What's NJ's interest in him?

He got his icetime cut a bit last game but how long until Sissons faces any heat from the coaching staff? I've long been a defender of him but he's been straight up garbage this year and almost everyone he's been paired with has significantly better numbers when they aren't stuck with him.

Curtis Lazar injury last night - didn't look good, so just looking at options for a warm body and extra forward.

To take Schenn or Lauzon with him.
I definitely worry about our D these days.

Josi is Josi,

Skjei is... well he's not as good as Ekholm as far as I can tell so far? :dunno: He's a reasonable veteran #2/3. He plays a different game than McDonagh, but can log minutes and be leaned on.

Our big problem IMO is that leaves us leaning waaaay too heavily on the rest. Lauzon and Carrier might be adequate 3rd pair guys. But we basically have to use them as our #3/4 guys, which is too high on the depth chart for the players they are. We don't use Fabbro, so whatever his ceiling is we'll never know. Schenn is washed.

I wish we had been able to land another top-4 UFA in addition to Skjei. Eventually Molendyk will arrive. But in the meantime, for a team that is supposedly in a "win-now" mode, I think we're at least one solid top-4 D away. I don't know how we get there, and I don't think there is upside in our current group (NHL or AHL) to get us there. Even if Stastney came back, he'd just be a more stable/mobile 3rd pair guy - which would be useful too - but we'd still end up leaning too much on Lauzon and Carrier IMHO. :dunno:

If we treated our LHD as LHD (instead of pairing Skjei and Josi together), then we have a pretty good setup at LHD. Josi, Skjei, Lauzon is pretty good depth. Bad thing is that puts our RHD as Fabbro, Carrier, and Schenn which is extremely weak.

If you pair Skjei and Josi together, you have a strong 1st pair, then the rest is less than ideal. Lauzon and Carrier would ideally be a strong 3rd pair but they are the default 2nd pair. Schenn and the rotational player then become a 3rd pair to be desired.

We dont really have a solution to either setup in house that could reasonably step up in the short term. MdG is more 3rd pairing upside and can pair with Schenn but that leaves Lauzon/Carrier as 2nd pair. Stastney has the same issue as MdG but with a little more upside.

We dont really have a RHD candidate that can step up to the NHL level or a LHD candidate capable of pushing Lauzon down a pair. So sortof stuck in no mans land until one of Molendyk, Gibson, Matier, Wilsby, etc manage to push their way up.

Apparently Stastney was skating at what appears to be a stick and puck in Sheboygan, WI. Not sure if that's a good or a bad sign.
Not being with either team (MIL/NSH), i take as a bad sign personally.

Not being with the team, but geographically at least close to Milwaukee. Although I guess he's from the Chicago area, so it's also not necessarily very far from home/family either? :dunno:

At least it's not some completely different location?

A reporter skating with him who can't report on what is going on with him is maybe a bigger worry for me. I mean, you'd ask, right? But you can't say. :dunno:

Yeah it definitely seems like he's nowhere close to returning but I guess he's at least alive and skating. I do think this kind of fits with him having gotten a bad concussion from the Joshua hit last playoffs and he's trying to work his way back. Whatever it is I really hate it for him but at least he got a decent payday this offseason.

Is Stastney counting against the roster currently? Can't they put him in Milwaukee as he'll need a recovery stent either way? Did we already talk about this?

He's on Season Opening IR, which I believe means he doesn't count against the roster limit but he does have a small cap hit based on the number of games he played last season. Puckpedia shows it as a $253k cap hit currently.

If he were close to returning, id think he would be skating in a practice somewhere even if just a non-contact jersey.

I highlighted this because does anyone think Ovie put in more time trying to get better defensively or would've been ok without getting his 2 minutes per PP time?

I'd like to know what the expectations are for Tomasino and Parssinen. Are they not playing the system well? Are they not hustling? Are they not producing points? Is it something off the ice that keeps them from being on the ice? Are they pouting?
I've said it before and I will say it again. They create more chances in the defensive zone than they do the offensive zone. Both seemed better in the limited preseason games I watched. But as soon the the AHLers were sent back, PT was back to watching the puck and getting beat off the wall.

He would have an easier time staying in the lineup if there was a net positive on the scoreboard

Well for everything that is going on, I think Brunette is close to find line combo's that work, he's either just got to bite the bullet and at least give Parssinen a try at center or Trotz is going to need to find a 2C.

Moving Marchessault to the first line seems to be ok, I think it just needs time. Stamkos and Nyquist as a pair seem to be working ok, they just need a center. Novak and Evangelista we know work well, they either just need a center or another winger. Fourth line is what it is. Brunette is not going to sit anyone on it except ZLH so not even worth worrying about.

Problem is I wouldn't want to give up any real assets at this team, cause it feels like throwing good money at a bad situation and it would be a waste.

We need
a 2C
a 3LW that Brunette will play and is better than Jankowski
A 2LHD or 1RHD to push lauzon/carrier down to 3rd pairing.
Not much cap room but it is clear that Trotz is going to throw good money after bad to try and maximize the next 2 seasons. What he should do is look through the system and start trying to move the prospects that dont fit into whatever system he wants to run here. Guys like Tomasino, Parssinen, Fabbro that are at the NHL level and possibly guys like Wood that are more finesse and less grit

And while I get this, you're saying McCarron and Smith are creating more in the offensive zone then they do in the defensive zone? While I understand your point, this team gets hemmed into their defensive zone a lot and that falls on a lot of players so while you may be correct, others appear to be having this same issue. Which takes me back to the point of, certain guys are given a lot longer leash, which in certain instances, is not warranted.

To add to this. Here are the worst players in the league in terms of GA/60 . Cole Smith is cutoff but comes in at 26th with a GA/60 of 5.61. Parsinnen's is really bad although he does also lead the league in Pts/60 which shows the effect of the small sample size and Tomasino is up there too. But guys like McCarron, Smith, and Sissons have also been bleeding GA and chances all season too yet barely get any reduction in usage. I'm not arguingthat Tomasino and Parsinnen were playing great in the opportunities they were given. What I am arguing is that the standards only seem to apply to them and not the tweener vet guys despite them being similarly bad.

I don't keep track of a lot of other teams transactions but is this something common across the league? I feel like I'd be really pissed if I were one of these players and my salary was being cut like this.
Yes, it's very common these days with half the league pressed right up against the Cap.

I guess it also shows that Trotz isn't going full bore on using the Johansen Cap space yet. We didn't nominally have space for both ZLH and MDG both up, at least not by Opening Day Cap numbers, but maybe as time ticks by we've accumulated enough pro-rated space for it to work. But it'd be ultra-tight even so, and hence definitely requires this kind of action.
