You'd be surprised just how productive their D-men will be when 'just a sniper' Stamkos returns.
They weren't very productive with Stamkos before...

He has the potential to become the Russian Ray Bourque. I doubt he's going to play less than 40 games. No chance Sergachev plays 40 games for Tampa next season, he's several years form being an NHL regular.
I don't understand posters who think he's too good for the OHL. Yes he was good at the Memorial Cup but his regular season was pretty meh and he outright sucked in the OHL playoff series against the Knights. At this point he's trending more towards being a #3 D in the NHL than a true #1 stud. He simply hasn't dominated in juniors the way you'd expect someone projected to be a future #1 to do. At least not yet. Another year in Windsor would be best for him, imo.

Bad comparison Daigle didn't even like to play hockey.Might as well induct the kid into the hall of fame and spare us all the wait, he will be the fastest inductee since no other then Alexandre daigle

Sergachev will play in the NHL, 0 doubt
but to think he is or would of been the savior on D for this franchise...is ridiculous...offensively..its there..no doubt about it...but if people really WATCHED him defensively...its..not pretty... hes going to get scored on A LOT in his lifetime without certain adjustments..
and quite frankly....id WAAAAAAAY more rather have Drouin ...it is what it is but drouin is a potential superstar...way more than sergachev EVER would have been...and ill take it any day of the week
Just looking at Tampa's D at the moment and it looks like their top 4D is set with Hedman, Stralman, Coburn, Girardi. Then they have Sustr, and Koekkoek.
Is Sergachev making the team and playing 40 games? Who's gets the capitals 2nd round pick?

Potential superstar?
Aren't we getting a little bit ahead of ourselves?
Yes.
Superstars a term reserved for the top ten or so players: Crosby, Malkin, McDavid, Tavares, Toews, Matthews, Stamkos, Karlsson, Subban, Doughty, Hedman.
Drouin will, at best, be in the next group, one step down.
I see Sergachev as a John Carlson type. Excellent skating, good puck-moving, good vision, used on the powerplay but wont be used in top match-ups. Likely a high end second pairing guy, low-end top pairing.
John Carlson is probably a top 20 Dman in the league... He's more of a #1 than he is a high-end second pairing guy.
Which is a terrific deal for a first round pick with a lot of potential but also with glaring flaws in his play.
If Serge doesn't pan out Tampa gets absolutely fleeced in this deal. Unless Drouin tears both his ACLs in his first game I don't see how the Habs could loose this trade.

This deal was most likely initiated by Yzerman. He had too many players to protect for the Vegas draft and would have to lose one. It came down to him protecting forwards: Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov, Ryan Callahan, Alex Killorn, Vladislav Namestnikov, Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat. Drouin was on the outside of the protection list (possibly because he was due for a salary contract raise).
He would have lost Drouin in the draft to Vegas. A list minute trade to Montreal got him Sergachev who didn't have to be protected. It worked in Montreal's favour since they had a forward spot left to protect Drouin.
It was a win-win for both teams. Tampa Bay wasn't fleeced, they got Sergachev instead of nothing.
Is Drouin actually less worth protecting than all seven of those guys?
Is Drouin actually less worth protecting than all seven of those guys?
No, Drouin is probably better than some of all those other seven, but a good situation presented itself. There were several articles on this explaining Tampa Bay's sides, which included Yzerman's comments.
If MB had said no to the trade, Yzerman might have/most likely would have changed his list to include Drouin and expose a different player. That would leave him with losing a forward that he wanted to keep. As it is, he keeps all his other forwards, but gives up the one that is due for a big raise, and gains a potential top defenseman.
The reason it looks like Yzerman initiated this is because he knew MB really wanted Drouin, but only he knew what his Vegas protection list would be. MB wouldn't have known that.
Montreal gains a top forward they want for a prospect ... Tampa Bay doesn't lose a forward they want to the Vegas draft, pays less cap, and a gets a top prospect defenseman.
As I said, a win-win for both teams. Nobody got fleeced in this.
