I am a Flyers fan. My business is partially in Tampa. So I am a season ticket holder for the Bolts & Flyers. Go figure. The Flyers sure could use a Drouin. I love him. With Sergachev, we have our guy already. We were blessed with Provorov, thanks to Devils stupidity.

Saw the Spitfires 8 times last year. Sergachev has a lot of Subban in him, the kid has great potential. But I also saw how he got rocked in camp and in the NHL. He's too good to play in the juniors, but not ready for the big leagues. Tampa will need to be patient with him. He is not like Provorov and Werenski. He's going to be a kid that makes a lot of mistakes in the first 2 years. But if handled properly, can become amazing.

You're a Flyers fan posting on the Habs board on behalf of Tampa, with a Bobby Orr avatar -- the ultimate hockey chameleon.

Seriously, thanks for the interesting take on the trade and your input on both players. Good luck to... um... most of your teams.

This is a dream trade and hard to believe the reaction from Habs fans but not entirely surprised.

From watching the team in the playoffs it was abundantly clear they lacked in offense.
To pick up a rising star like Drouin is unbelievable.
People say good trade for a team that needs to win now. Hogwash!! This kid is 23 years old. It's a good trade for now and the future. And to get a French Canadian kid to boot is just icing on the cake.
Sergahev is a prospect albeit a good one. He's completely unproven.

I love this trade!!!

Gallagher and Shaw are third liners now. No way we should be paying our 3rd liners over 4 million a season. Lehkonen, Danault, and Byron is an excellent 3rd line and all are paid around 1 million per year. We can use the freed up money to pay our top six players: Pacioretty, Radulov, Drouin, Galchenyuk, plus two more (Derek Stepan?, Kovalchuck?, Jagr?).

So you have an issue with Gallagher, our best player in the playoffs, and to take some of his money to pay a guy like Pacioretty?

You like losing uh.

Unless Drouin stalls or even regresses and Sergachev hits his ceiling this should be an amazing trade. MB's done a lot of wrong but this was a very very good move.

The trade in of itself is not the issue. We traded a stud for a stud. MB can do a lot of stupid things between now and September and erase the offensive benefits of the Drouin trade.

For instance:

a) if Radulov is neither signed nor adequately replaced

b) unloads Galchenyuk at a lower market value. And don't tell me he won't because he just did with Beaulieu. Instead of not bashing Bobo at the end of season PC he went and tore down his player in public knowing full well he was going to trade him in the off season. That was stupid. When asked why Beaulieu wasn't dressed he could have simply replied he had a nagging injury. Yeah, I know it's a lie but it wouldn't be the first time he lied. At least this lie would be to protect the value of his player.

c) It looks like MB is going to make Patches, a meh player at best, a cornerstone of his team. Patches has shown himself to be useless in the playoffs. Torts went out of his way to call him out in the Canada Cup. Does MB need anymore clues? But apparently MB is impressed by the fact that Patches doesn't go to bars and has milk and cookies before going to bed at nine P.M.

d) If he doesn't pick up legit centers then we're starting the season with Drouin and if he isn't traded maybe Galchenyuk. That doesn't look like a Cup contending formula.

So to make this Drouin trade pay off he has at least three or four more deals to pull off: Sign or replace Radulov, get one or two legit top 6 centers ( I would keep Galchenyuk and unload Patio Ready to fill this need), sign or replace Markov and probably get another d-man.

Let's wait and see if he does it. Right now I'm fighting real hard to hold onto my patience. The way he handled the Beaulieu situation makes me want to agree with the MB bashers and say he doesn't have any vision. But I'm going to wait till the end of July.

Conditional pick that we sent to Tampa was Washington's pick.

2nd round pick - Tampa Bay (from Montréal via Washington - Eller trade - Drouin trade)

I like your post. Lots of good points no doubt.

but I see a lot of posts on this thread talking about the Drouin trade being "useless" unless they make other moves. Same with the saying "you just depleted the future defense". (did people actually think TB was going to give away Drouin?)

What a bunch of garbage. They are separate issues. What happened with this trade is you made the hardest move of them all. No way I ever would have thought they could pull off getting a guy like Drouin a young rising star. Unbelievable.

Whether MB can pull off any other moves still doesn't discount this as an unbelievable trade for the organization. It's not "useless". Drouin will be around as a very good potentially great player for the next 8-10 years.

He's not soft at all. No need to worry about that. Unlike Gallagher, he has the speed and skill to open up his own lanes. Everyone was thinking Rad was gonna be soft. We may have a similar scenario with Drouin.

Drouin may not be soft, but he is a perimeter playmaker. He doesn't have that great a shot and he doesn't shot from prime areas on the ice regularly.

The man's highlight reels don't reflect the day-in-day-out player Drouin has been in the National Hockey League. Expectations that he's a potential regular 30 goal scorer are misguided. The more realistic hope is he's a regular 40 assist playmaker.

Wow...we must have been watching different players.

Don't watch the highlight reels to get a good gauge on a player. Look at his total body of work. There are good reasons he's not been an impressive goalscorer in the NHL in his career. That's distinct from being a scorer of impressive individual goals.

even better.:D

There are plenty of offensive players in the NHL but I particularly find players with superior hockey sense and vision to be very valuable.

Clearly a guy like Crosby is better and more valuable then a guy like Ovie.

Drouin is not the scrappy player Crosby is but he has that on ice vision that makes others around him better.

Alex Tanguay was a always a guy who would have been fun to have as a Hab in his prime. It's nice that Bergevin managed to get the current incarnation of that (assuming Drouin improves his defensive play at even strength).

Galchenyuk take 2 eh? Even worst if you're forcing him at center.

The tendency to put offense and defense in separate buckets in hockey is something I don't understand. The game's way too fluid and fast to view it like that, and at the end of the day the game's about out-scoring, not just scoring or just stopping.

But I believe Galchenyuk and Drouin both produce more offensively than what they give up defensively. Guys with the capability to put up 30G/30A like Galchenyuk probably can or the 20G 40A Drouin should be capable of don't grow on trees in the Second Dead Puck Era.

that can't be, as the Washington 2nd rounder we have is 2017, so it has to be the Hawks pick in 2018.

I am a big fan of adding bonafide talent to the team, so I'm happy with this trade. Just gotta hope Mete and Juulsen turn out to be top 4.Otherwise, the D is gonna be a mess in a couple of years.

I can't believe this trade yestarday, today and next month.

Amazing job by Bergevin.

Weise, Fleischmann, Subban, maybe 2th round pick 2018 and Sergachev for Danault, Drouin, 2nd round pick 2018, maybe 6th round pick 2018 and Weber... Wooooooooooooooooow.

We lost the Subban for Weber trade by quite a bit.
We traded a former 17th overall pick for 3rd round pick.
Traded 2 early 2nds for Shaw and signed him to 6 years 4 mil a year deal.
We threw away a 4th and a 6th for complete trash in King and Ott.
Traded Pateryn and 4th for Benn
Tradr Racine and a 6th for Nesterov.

Bergevin is trading players and assets away without getting much in return.

Hmm... Beaulieu is a disctraction for this club. (party man). Hockey isn't all about talent...

We don't know if Debrincat and Girard gonna be great in the future, yes they got good potential... but we don't know....

Pateryn and 4th for Benn... good deal for Montreal Canadiens IMO.

Racine and 6th for Nesterov, it's like Sekac for DSP lol...

No we didn't. Both teams improved over last year.

Weber had the clearly better regular season.

In the playoffs, Subban was in a good situation. He was the 6th leading scorer on the Preds this playoff. Yet he was the Habs leading playoff scorer even as they never got to the SCF. I'm not saying that the Habs lesser success was Subban's fault. But clear as day - First versus Sixth. You think maybe the Preds were more than a one-man team??

Meanwhile Weber was our best all-around player in the playoffs. He was not the reason we could not beat the Rangers.

There is no way to say that either team lost the trade, never mind by a lot.

The Danault trade was excellent. The Drouin trade is a good gamble and we may even void the swap of picks if TB needs Misha this year.

However, the Beaulieu give-away is foolish. Nate is only about 6 months older than Danault!

What where you expecting for Beaulieu? The guy is terrible, and he has a disgusting attitude. So glad he is gone, I could take a dump on the ice and it would still be better defensively than Beaulieu. Hope Beaulieu has a great time at Buffalo, and not try to fight a door or something.
