honest question: what will happen in the not completely unlikely case that weber retires at ~38?

(in the graph 2 pages back i saw 8, 12, 24M cap penalty for nashville, isn't this a little bit risky?)

I was only born in one city, so I'll forever be a Montreal Canadiens fan but boy is this a hard one to swallow. I'm sure Weber will have some good times as a Hab but he won't ever be what PK Subban was and still will be for a long time. Gosh what a tough year it is gonna be watching my team without him. :(

Mtl,s defense is certainly alot tougher after this move ,but they are also alot slower .Thinking they need to add a mobile element here ,say a Fowler. If they dont they could be easier to pin down in the Dzone .

I don't know what the **** Montreal's scouts are seeing, or what Bergevin is seeing.

****, can they not even notice what Roman Josi is doing while Weber is playing? Josi is doing a lot of Subban-like things. Engaging in one-on-one battles, carry the puck, passing the puck, controlling the breakout. In fact, watching these Nashville playoff games have been revealing about Josi and Subban. They are QUITE similar in style. Josi is smaller, weaker, faster, and bit more intuitive with puck distribution. Subban is stronger, slower, and bit more prone to dumb puck hogging. Bascially, now with Subban, Nashville doesn't need Josi to be the guy do all that everywhere in the zone while Weber covers the crease and corners in a sort of "zone". Subban can take one side and Josi the other. OR, failing that, Subban can be pair with Ekholm and Nashville rolls out two #1 pairs.

Where is that sort of guy in our system? They don't believe in Beaulieu, so it must be Markov as choice #1. hahahaha

Nashville, enjoy yourselves. You got a pair of twins now on D, kind of like Kane and Panarin.

I'm dead serious.

Poile is a smart GM. I have to believe that he had some assurances from the league that Nashville will not be penalized to the fullest extent on this; otherwise he doesn't make this trade.

Just think Nashville could have traded Weber to Philly for: Sam Morin, Travis Sanhiem, Ivan Provorov, and German Rubstov

You're no taking into account how much better Weber would have made Philly, most likely we would have a shot at drafting zero of those guys. Matching the OS was the only option we had, anything else would have been incredibly stupid.

I doubt this.

Look at it this way. If they think Weber is going to fall off before the end of the deal, they either penalize themselves by overpaying Weber for a few seasons, or they trade him now and eventually penalize themselves with cap recapture.

They were going to get hurt somehow with that contract either way, it was just a matter of time.

Nashville is a contender. They had a chance to swap Weber for at the very least a comparable player who is a few years younger, fits better with the age of their group, and is closer to his prime than Weber. He also costs less real money than Weber right now.

The most likely scenario is that Weber retires in 7 years when he is nearly 40 and his compensation drops to 1M. Nashville couldn't just pass up that opportunity in fear of getting hurt by cap recapture in 7 years. 7 years down the road is a very long time.

Although I doubt they've thought about it this far or are really worrying about it....because as I said, 7 years is a very long time away in hockey years, but with the age of their core players, they could time things so that they could blow things up and rebuild in time for that cap recapture albatross. Most of their key players are in their mid 20s right now.

The Subban trade basically gives them 7 years to make it worth it by winning a cup.

Weber just got a juicy $8 million dollar signing bonus from Montreal. Gotta think Nashville loves not having to pay him that anymore.

Nashville has already paid off the worst part of Weber's contract (dollars wise). It actually starts getting pretty manageable. Poile mentioned in his presser that over the next 6 years, he will have to pay PK more than he would have paid Weber ($50 million vs. $40 million).

Bergevin's legacy won't be this trade. It will be the depth he adds or doesn't add to the roster. He's out of excuses for this barely average roster.

I guess the team Canada scouts also missed the memo. Weber got the most RD minutes on team Canada two years ago and got selected again. Subban was the # 5 choice for the current team Canada RD's. But yeah posters on hfbosrds knows better than quality NHL people.

I'm already past it. Shocked at first that they pulled the trigger, but I love Weber in the Habs. One of a handful of defensemen I would choose to trade Subban for.

Many would probably even place him as #6 RD behind Letang. Especially with the season and playoffs he's had.

And have you noticed that everytime he's left off or put down the depth chart pretty much everyone wonders what the hell their thinking. Subban is an absolute beast defenseman, so is Weber, but Subban is younger with a shorter contract and was beloved by Canadians fans. The Canadian National team is a popularity contest, Canada could ice 2 gold medal quality rosters in international play, it comes down to name recognition and position. They want hockey players who act like prototypical hockey players internationally, so they have stories about how Crosby asked Toews if it was okay if he was the captain, not about how Subban was showboating in their 8-0 blowout of Belarus.

It's like the question of BPA or drafting for position. If Canada really took the best of the best they would have a team made up of 11 centers and 5 LHD, but we know Babcock wants balance on defense and guys who will grind out a win, not a defenseman who will carry it down the ice, around the net, back to the blueline and take a shot.
