And he brought in two of them. If you want to see what failing to address the defense looks like, see Lou's tenure here

Agree Lou failed miserably but we need to move on. True Dubas brought in Ceci and Barrie but they clearly were not the answers. Doubt he would have traded for Ceci if not to rid himself of Z and Brown's cap hit. Barrie and Kerfoot were also his second choice in trades for Kadri.

Well this has gone from bad to worse. Rielly was having a tough time this year and clearly not healthy in the first place. Now things are really going to get ugly.

Andersen needs to find himself soon since he’ll have to be in god mode for the next while. Everyone else will have to find a new level of defensive awareness.

Why are you ignoring Muzzin?

In all seriousness, this is a huge blow based on the minutes Mo eats. However, lets not pretend that Rielly has been great. I think we can pull through as long as all 18 guys on that bench commit to a more defensively responsible style of play. We need to play like we did against the Isles every damn game.

Muzzin was a month prior to the TDL and he clearly was not enough. How much talk was their that they needed some depth on D before the TDL and he brought in Petan ?? It all fell apart when Gards and Dermott went down while Rosen was already out with a broken foot.

With the Leafs playing all offense all the time this injury probably won't hurt that bad.

I see it as a blessing in disguise because we get a healthy fresh Rielly for the playoffs. Its a great evaluation period for Dubas also actually.

I wonder how all the "Rielly is terrible defensively" people are feeling now that Rielly is gone for 2 months. Anyway, bad injury but I still believe in this team. Dermott is going to have to step up and I think Muzzin is due back fairly soon, so things don't look as bad. I wonder if this means Liljegren is getting a look at the NHL level soon now too.

I don't think Rielly is terrible defensively, I just think he's not good enough defensively to be a shutdown D. His usage should be similar to Burns in San Jose, not to Vlasic-Karlsson.

That being said, this loss will definitely hurt because Muzzin is also hurt. Muzzin got hurt, which forced Rielly to play harder usage. Now Rielly is injured, and this will force someone to play harder usage. Dermott, Sandin, Marincin aren't exactl proven LHD lol.

I would go with:

Dermott (23 mins) - Holl (22 mins)
Sandin (17 mins) - Barrie (22 mins)
Marincin (20 mins) - Ceci (16 mins)

Hopefully they can handle it (they'll be forced to lol).

If losing Rielly who looks like he's been playing injured all year with poor results sewers the team then I guess they were just never good enough.

This team is allergic to defence. They might be able to do it for a few games but it is not in their DNA.

Unless we can hang onto the puck 75% of the time or our goalies find the holy grail, this injury is going to hurt IMO.
They can't play defense and the goalies have been sieves, not sure what's changed.

Rielly or no Rielly they still need 4 goals a game minimum to have a chance to win.

He needed the time off as he has not looked himself this season (its almost a certainty he's been injured.) Unfortunately the D is weak without him but the injury forced the issue.

Hopefully Muzzin is back soon.

Might sound stupid, but I actually thinks he needed this one.
Played through the whole season with an injury anyways, and he was absolutely terrible.

Take your time, and make sure you get back 100%.
He will be a better player when he comes back, thats for sure.
