Yeah, but this is not what Smith was signed for. When he's paired with Skjei, heck- when he's paired with anyone other than Staal or Kampfer, he needs to clamp down and avoid the fancy. Fancy isn't his thing. ADA should be careful too, but only because he seems exploitable. Fancy is supposed to be his game.
 
Smith will be fine. He's a legit top-4 d-man and he'll figure it out. Just needs to keep it simple.

Smith isn’t more than capable of moving the puck. Much better than staal or girardi. The problem is what the other guy mentioned. All three forwards flee the zone and the dman does NOT have the safe check down pass(to use a football reference)
 
I'm not sure if DeAngelo's flubs and struggles have something to do with not meshing well with Staal. It just seems like he works much better when he's constantly moving and hitting the forwards going up ice and not stationary in corners or behind the net receiving the chip or reverse from Staal before he starts moving up ice.

You don't think he's top-4? Was probably our best d-man last playoffs. 2 bad games and a healthy scratch doesn't change my mind.
 
Smith playing poorly all season long is about as likely as Staal playing like a legit good top 4 defenseman all season long, in my mind

He's hardly a top4 on this team and we are regarded as one of the worst defensive teams.
 
Smith is a proven elite shot suppressor from his time with the Red Wings and during his stint with us last year.

I have faith he'll return to form.

What flubs and struggles? He had a couple of ugly turnovers that people are magnifying x100000.

It's Keith Yandle all over again.

Staal has looked better these past 3 games than he has at any point in the past 3 seasons.

If he could just play at this level going forward then I have problem with him on the 3rd pair.

Yeah Christmas is also amazing, and also happens once a year.

Seriously. He’s also a kid with tremendous upside who should be in the lineup.

Holden made similar horrible turnovers tonight, Hank bailed him out though.

Kampfer looks like an AHL player struggling to keep up. Him getting nhl minutes over Smith and DeAngelo is utterly baffling.

Simply intoning it doesn't make it so. He's going to have to play to that level with some consistency, or hes going to end up on the third pair or on the bench. And we'll be stuck with another pretty untradeable contract.

It was a reply to the other guy who said he isn't even top-4 on this team.

Smith will be fine. Extremely small sample size.
