Great game! Was happy to be there. Hank bounces back and Mika another goal. That line was buzzing tonight.

Good for Skjei getting a goal. But what is up with his ice time? That's not helping my fantasy team much! I know, you couldn't care less. But really, this is a guy who a number of Ranger fans laughed at trading for Trouba and he's not getting PP time and the overall time he's getting is #6 tonight. So what's going on here? thanks in advance for the replies!

Can wait to see a Ranger game in a couple weeks!

I thought if there were a way to turtle, that was the way to do it in the 3rd period. They did a much better job of playing keep away than last season where they let the other team blitzkrieg Hank and hoped for the best. Buch is much stronger and better conditioned from last year. It's impossible to argue against his lack of strength and conditioning with the way he looks this year. I like this version of Marc Staal, and I hope this game was a nice wakeup call to Brendan Smith. I want to go back to 12F and 6D though. Kampfer can't be getting more icetime than ADA.
If ADA needs time and space to find his game, there's nothing wrong with him taking a trip to Hartford. He doesn't require waivers. Kampfer looked useable, but I'd be fine with giving Pionk a look also. And if Bereglazov looks ready...

I wonder if we can retrain ADA to play on the wing (but keep him at the point on the PP).

Great game once the boys settled in.

Right, my only issue with our forward lineup is that even when Fast returns, Paul Carey is still in the lineup. He's not an NHl'er, does nothing to help the team.

I'd try out Nieves instead, he brings speed and PK'ing. If he's not good enough, go 7D, double shift forwards like we did today. I like that much better than having essentially a useless player like Carey.
Carey is doing just fine in his limited role. I'm sure the preference would be for Nieves if they thought Nieves was ready.

Buch must be training with the ghost of the late Vasily Alekseyev

Off topic but i think i need a new name guys and girls. CaptainCally.. yeah that was a few years ago lol.

Any suggestions? Maybe something with Jagr. He's my all time favourite and the reason i became a Rangers fan.

MovesLikeJagr?

Liked that the team had more structure tonight but I'm gonna have to self ban from this board if AV keeps running McD Staal. That's some grade A dumb shit, making your best D play his off side

Guys like Skjei, DeAngelo, even Shattenkirk just need to stop trying to make really high risk breakout passes. You shouldn't be trying to make a cross ice pass through a forecheckers legs to a guy all the way up in the neutral zone, that's just unnecessarily high risk. But that also means the forwards just can't abandon the D and force them to have to make ridiculous passes. Someone, not sure who it was, had a "bad" turnover when they tried to make a long breakout pass from deep in their zone and it was picked off at the blueline, but in review why are the two D the only guys in the zone, Montreal has two forecheckers at the Rangers blueline, and all of the Rangers forwards are behind them in the neutral zone? Now I'd say the D should skate that up but they have absolutely zero support from their forwards and are forced to try to skate it at the forecheckers with no support, or make a nearly impossible pass.

As for Smith...same deal really. Stop trying to do too much. Stop trying to make the highlight play every time you get the puck. I think some of his puck fumbles were also because his head was getting ahead of his hands. Just cool it and start simple and let things come to you. Rangers really forced it badly in the first two games and calmed down with more structure this game.

Carey has been ok in my book. He hasn't been a liability, and that's something. For 4th line minutes, he's been ok. Nieves didn't impress me in the pre-season. I don't think they can go 7D and 11F for an extended period of time.

Staal - 19:08

Holden - 16:45

Kampfer - 16:39

DeAngelo - 3:45

It has begun...

Why didn't Smith play? Why did DeAngelo only get around 4 minutes, injuries? AV just being AV?

Missed the game unfortunately.

Because Brendan Smith has been horrible so far.

There are still things I question about this team but I feel like this was somewhat better. I mean we still let Hank hang out to dry but other things looked ok

I think he saw the puck a LOT better tonight that he did in the first two games. He looked a lot calmer and not fighting it as much, I'd suggest that the D did a better job giving him clear sight of the puck and even when guys got in on him, they didn't have room to make a lot of moves so he was able to seal off a side.

I mean I'm not saying it was a GREAT game by the team but the structure was better. I'm generally OK with the coaches pulling back on things and going more conservative with players and gameplans after the first two shit shows but it ultimately can't be a long trend either. The D is going to have to learn how to move the puck effectively without turning it over, forwards keep helping out, etc.

I think everyone got a bit ahead of themselves in the first couple of games...playing too loose, lots of high risk passes and types of play, all the D thought they were hot shit and could make any kind of ridiculous pass, the forwards all thought they could burn up the ice without a worry, now they have to pull back and get some fundamentals down first then work from there.

The forwards were just way too aggressive in going on the transition offense the previous two games and were flying the zone. The D were also joining the play too aggressively. Lots of times, they were below the goal line when the puck was going the other direction. They just need better gap control especially when Staal and Holden are out there.

True but he's better than Kampfer and Holden. Everyone has rough games.

It doesn't matter. Sometimes a message has to be sent.

Thankfully Chytil was scratched tonight. I am still laughing at the people who were complaining about his ice time last game. Sometimes it is better to shelter the kid. Throwing him out there when he is struggling will sometimes only make things worse.

Saw some of the game tonight. They looked good. No complaints. On to the next game.

Yup that's a big part, doesn't matter how good your breakout passer is if he has to pass it through the other team halfway down the ice because all the forwards blew the zone as quickly as possible. It's a line this "system" has always had to carefully walk and it seems like it's hard for them to figure it out early in the season.

The high risk long breakout passes have been a part of our system since AV took over. When it works it’s amazing.. when it doesn’t (like in the playoffs) we really struggle to get in the O zone, let alone score

I have to agree. Chytil has looked very out of place basically neutralizing his line. People think just throwing him out there for 10, 15 minutes a game is going to solve things. Sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't. We all have our opinions but i think it Chytil's case it would have made it worse along with hurting the team.
On the other hand, not a big fan of playing kampfer over TD hopefully thats just very short term.

Yeah that's why I say it's a line the team has to carefully walk...as I said it doesn't work when everyone flies the zone and leave the D with no support and lets the opposing team just set up a trap. It can often work great on a quick turnover and one or two guys break hard up the ice and the D can catch the other team a bit flat footed.
