If Jake Muzzin had the same contract as Petry...you do that trade? Also, that package doesn't equal Kap+Sandin.

That would fit our window with this group, yeah.

I doubt teams value Kapanen as much as you guys do.

Which is fine, there are many players that hold more value to the teams they are on than they do to other teams.

Habs will pass. Not competing? They are in a pack with Boston and Buffalo for the 3rd spot in the division..

Kapanen isn't one of those players. he's the 3rd best RWer on the Leafs. Other teams would give up a lot to add a talent like that and play him regularly in the top 6

Yes, 2 rivals trading, Yes petry is involve, no clue how both party will react to this, Yes it's kinda a bad timing to do this proposal with Nylander Struggling but he's clearly going to pick it up. Please fully read before posting, Please no salty answers, constructive post only

Petry (15% retained) 4.675M for this current season + 2 extra year

for

Sandin + Kapanen

Reasoning:

Toronto:

it's no secret, Toronto's Offense is hella stacked, Nylander just signed a 7M long term contract, Marner and Matthews are due to big raises, Kapanen is also looking for a contract next season, while it might be a bridge the 3.5M-ish+ might be problematic when it will be time to add Defense! Gardiner is likely leaving this offseason and toronto is in good shape for years to come on the Left side with Reilly and Dermott who will take bigger responsability next year! hence why i think Sandin could be expendable! Petry has been playing amazing hockey in the past 2 years, despite being 31, he's shown no sign of regress and would fit Toronto like a glove for the next 2 years in a half (3 playoffs) wich are High contend window.

Montreal:

Montreal is in no shape to contend, our division is currently too young and strong, Weber is likely stuck here and will be mentoring young guns for the years to come wich will prevent kids like Juulsen, Brook, Fleury to flourish and etasblished themself as NHLers. Montreal gets a good LHD prospect wich is a big need and a fast RW that can shoot the puck and follow Drouin and Domi!

Conclusion:

In my humble opinion, i think it's a solid trade for both side, Montreal gets a prospect in a position of need that can go directly to laval and add a young middle six RW. The point of the NHL is to win a Stanley cup and Toronto is right there, they have a solid window and despite losing Kapanen's offensive wich is currently on the 3rd line, Petry comes, brings PMD and stabilize their Defense wich will create more offensive in the end.

Not a fan of trading Sandin

-Lets agree to disagree on the contending part ( if the Defense gets better)

-As for Kapanen, he will always be behind Marner and Nylander, i dont see how he can become a legit top 6 guy in toronto!

-for the D, it realy depends how Dermott continues to progress but he's showing he could very soon be a top 4 Dman wich is why i thought sandin could be used to upgrade the right side.

-In my opinion you guys need to capitalize on prime Tavares, young matthews, Marner, Nylander Andersen, peak Kadri, Everything is Rose with Tavares right now he's still fairly young but your Window is in his Peak, not saying he will regress anytime soon, some player peaks longer than other but i still feel Toronto needs to go ALL out in the next 4 years counting this season!

Once again, i know the feel of trading prospect but at the end of the day it's about the stanley cup!

I think Leafs forwards are on par with Tampa/Winnipeg for best in the League, and a few teams are damn close depending on who is hot.
Tampas D is exponentially better than ours right now. As is Winnipeg.

Only way to improve our D to a point where we are a legit contender in there ilk would mean trading forwards and multiple high picks.

IMO, the plan for the Leafs should be to use the offseasons to convert Kap to a LWer, or at least try.

Kap with Matthew's and Nylander
Hyman/ Johnsson with Tav and Marner
That's a sick top 6 and IMO matches well against any other team.

On D, I'm of the opinion smaller costing players make more sense right now, where we convert assets who are a nicety but not a necessity.
I.e Brown who when he is on a 4th line, is making double what he should.

Gudas makes sense to me, a bit of grit, plays a good amount of minutes and can make a 1st pass. Decent improvement over a Hainsey without breaking the bank.
Pysyk would be a step above Ozighanov for now, and has played 4th man minutes in the past with decent shot suppression numbers.
Neither would cost a ton, and both have 1 extra year at low cap hit.
This gives the Liljgren, Ozighanov, Rassanen, Durzi types until the end of next year to improve before we force some into NHL action. If ones ready ahead of time? Play them!

I guess I just see it as a tierd league.
Winnipeg, Tampa, Boston, Nashville in the top tier, and us in the next.

Value is probably close, but I'd rather not face Kapanen 5 times a season for the next 10+ years.

Oh man that is tough.

I wouldn't want to give up Sandin but Petry (especially w salary retained) would help us so much.

Good proposal OP.

Every team in the league has a prospect like Sandin come on. He's not a "top prospect" at all.

I don't think many teams have an 18 year old D man playing well in the AHL right now. For me, I would consider him more valuable than Liljegren at this point.

This is what happens when a trade proposal with the biggest rivals come along haha! The proposal is pretty fair value wise (maybe not fit wise on montreal's end) and both teams proceed to dump on it. But I find this to be behaviour that should exist between rivals. Keep up the good work boys!!!

Switch Kapanen for picks and I'd consider it.

Really? That works better for the Leafs anyway.. If you get a player of Kapanen's value outside of the top 5 (let's be real here 2015 is an exception, most other drafts I am talking about) that is a massive, massive win. I'd easily substitute the Leafs first in there because the chances of getting a guy as good as Kappy is is not very good.

I mean Larsson for Hall shows that solid defensemen are often rare to find and of high value on trade market.

I don't think every team will overpay at anytime for a player like Petry - but under the right circumstances and in the right time I think his value could be through the roof.

Hall for Larsson still eh? Fans always beat that drum but then ignore the Karlsson and McDonagh trades where teams got these guys for picks and lesser pieces, and both are way better than Larsson.

I mean, it would be incredibly dumb of Leafs MGMT to waste this opportunity and fill up before they have to give insane raises... but OK.

It would be incredibly dumb to waste this opportunity.. That doesn't mean it makes sense to be even dumber and vastly overpay in assets when the window is open for at least 5 years after this season given the ages of the core.
