Only A level rentals get top prospects.. Monahan was a B level rental and the 1st is the absolute top end of what you get for those.
Monahan probably had a list of teams, a subset of contenders, that he wanted to be traded to. Hughes, as an ex-player agent, is trying to make Montreal look like a good place to play and doing some damage control after Bergevin's tenure. Presumably he's willing to give up the difference between this deal and getting maximum assets back in return for an easier time getting FAs to sign when they compete in 2-3 years.

It could be a good enough draft that they won't want to flip the pick. Moving up would be good but if Montreal is picking top 5 or so already a late first wouldn't be enough to move up a spot. from late to mid, sure, but once you are in the top 5 or top 10 moving up a spot costs. It will depend on if Hughes can find another, less injury-prone, Dach.

32nd overall goes to the team that wins the cup. I’m more than confident Peg isn’t winning the cup this year. In fact, I can see the losing first or second round.
If we do pick 32nd overall with this Jets pick, we're also getting a 3rd in 2027 when the Jets are no longer any good. ;)

6 ft 7 in. Dean Letourneau sits 32nd on the latest Mackenzie list : Elite Prospects - NHL Draft Center TSN/BOB McKENZIE TOP 32

Edit : there is a HF thread about him. Very intriguing player. If the 1st was a boring return to you, you might as well use your imagination to project what it could become (altough I'm pretty sure it will be used as a trade chip).
Can he work with a skating specialist to pick up an extra gear? I can be pressed into service and put together a team that uses motion capture.
I bet that we could do some neural network-based human pose estimation from historic video and train the network to understand what the likes of Pavel Bure do right, then try to imbed these principles into pace-challenged players.

Then profit.

This forum is the only place on earth anyone is excited about the improbability of the 26th over all pick in 2024 even sniff the nhl some day. The Money line was the last reason to watch games (or having 2 offensive lines for the 1st time since Kovalev). Thank goodness we have the pwhl at least :(

What is this fascination with Brad Lambert all about. :dunno:
Sure he can shoot and skate but in the games I saw him in he was a one and done peripheral winger.
If there is any dog in him it's Chihuahua.
Not high up on my list of needs for our club.
Agreed. As part of the Monahan trade - a 1st and Lambert for Monahan and another player maybe. On his own not interested.

Well good news for you is that Newhook is coming back and they'll have 2 lines again.

And the rebuild just started so there will be way more talent on this roster over the next few years than we've seen since the early 90s.

Gignac isn’t signed to an NHL deal but Condotta and Stephens are. Hesitation might have been due to whether or not to use a contract slot on Gignac at this time.
And Gignac if signed and recalled must clear waivers first

Good deal.

He can always re-sign with us anyway.

We got two 1st and good play during his stint literally for free.

Another 4 years of excuses for Hugo's management, and please stop with the Newhook-Dach example, only 23 and 60 games played so far
You're missing the point. Maybe it hasn't worked out yet, maybe never will. But don't say they aren't willing to trade picks for players they are. And they are willing to try things that previous management wasn't. I get you don't like KH thays fine but you're negativity is hypocritical and unfounded. Wait a couple of years before you tar and feather them maybe?

i dont like helping other canadian teams. was hoping he'd go to dallas or colorado. easier to root for those teams
But we want to root against whoever got Monahan so we get a higher pick so you're in luck ;)

Hopefully we can trade up with the pick to around the top 15.
That’s the possibility it opens up. We don’t need the pick per se given the drop off at the spot it likely ends up in, it’s the currency it represents.

And as a younger generation of GMs enters the league, they are more likely to place a premium on futures and may want to pay a decent price for it.

So we have two 1st this year and two 1st next year is that it?

We have to hit on at least 2 of those 4 picks. Good place to be.

I think that's a bit high. Might have to accept the mole hairs.
