Again, I don't understand the rush. They can win the division without Gray this year. Blowing all of these pieces now is only going to come back to bite you when you don't have those bullets left to use on a bigger target.
This is where I'm at with this. No need to burn Florial now. This time next year or in '19, he can move up the charts a la Jimenez. He can become the headline piece or a part of the solution in the Bronx.

Joel Sherman

Hearing #Yankees not pushing on Darvish, Verlander's 18-19 too expensive. Seems like either Gray or nothing to boost rotation. #Athletics

translation, you can forget about them pursuing Darvish as a FA next year.

When I was a kid, the leadoff hitters rarely hit for power. It was all about slapping down on the ball, bunting, stealing, working the count, drawing walks.

They all seem to have power now.

Not complaining, it's been an exciting progression.

I was talking about Gray to a friend of mine this past week. Wonder if it actually happens. And for what. I kept hearing Torres+. But that's crazy and I hope Cashman wouldn't do that.

Torres isn't getting traded for Sonny Gray.

If the Yankees made him off limits for Quintana, they won't make him available for Gray. Your friend is nutso.

It definitely won't be for Torres. I think Florial or Mateo as the centerpiece would be more realistic for someone like Gray.

3 minor league relievers for Reed, none of which are good. Mets went cheap again, they dumped Reed's money on the Sox for a lesser return.

Reed to Kimbrel will lock down the later innings for the red sox

Gray is gonna cost a lot but you guys already probably know this. He's controlled for 2.5 years and is a top of the rotation guy.

It's gonna start with one of Chance Adams/Sheffield and one of Florial/Matteo and then some lower prospects, too.

All of which are top 30 prospects for the Red Sox (18, 23, and 28 respectively). Yes, they did give the farm for Sale, but these guys would be in their top 30 most likely anyway, with the exception being #28.

For a 2 month rental for a relief pitcher, it's a good return. Reed isn't Chapman. He wasn't going to net you that type of a return.

If Cashman convinces them to make the trade without Florial (please :)) then I think we see Mateo, Adams, Wade, and Acevedo. Just a guess.

They all sound like maybes, and no better than 8th inning guys, if they hit their ceilings. Likely 6th/7th inning guys or long-men, one guy might not even get to the big leagues. I'm pretty sure all three are also Rule 5 eligible, and none big league ready yet. The salary dump news isn't great either, given everyone knows the Wilpon's always prefer saving money to bettering the team.

One guy has a 5 ERA in high A. He wouldn't be on anyone's radar if he didn't hit 100. That 100 means nothing, if you suck and your 100 is hit hard. Remember Domingo Tapia? He hit 100 in A ball for the Mets, but sucked. Now he's nearly 26, and still hasn't reached the majors. And the other two seem okay maybe relievers, but I would've expected a better return than two Paul Sewalds from a year ago for one of the best players on the market. I would've liked a prospect who has potential to start, whether thats at the plate or mound. We've gotten four relievers for Duda and Reed, which is nice, I won't complain about players who can help the team, but I'm not sure its such a great deadline with all our rentals between Duda, Reed, Granderson, Bruce, Cabrera, Walker if all we are going to do for the major league team is find a reliever or two. To get Ramos, we gave up a top 10 prospect in our system. Detroit got a top 100 prospect in the majors for Justin Wilson, and another high potential guy who's now top 10 in their system. We didn't get any top 15 prospects, maybe not a top 20 prospect.

And then there's this, WTF are these idiots waiting for? We have no need for any of these guys to stay. Dump them all, best return we can get.

I prefer to go based on what scouts and those who understand the market as is instead of people overreacting to players they have never watched or monitored.

It's going to be Mateo+Florial+Acevedo+another piece.

And its going to suck. They're going to be in the same exact position a year from now when Gray is on the DL.

You think Heyman watches these prospects play?

This was from a writer of Sox-prospects.com. Rule 5 guy, 5 ERA in A ball, remember Domingo Tapia? If your 100 results in runs, its irrelevant how hard you throw.

And here's the assessment on the other two.

Maybe Reed had no value, I don't know the market, but thats be real, we got nothing, absolutely 0 for Reed.
