The best players would still get their 20ish mins per night once special teams are factored in.
There's about 50 minutes of ES time per game, so split evenly, that's 12.5 minutes before special teams. How are they getting the other 7.5 minutes?

33 year old Tavares is the only one that may struggle to live up to his cap hit, and that doesn't change anything about the rest of the point.

I do see a problem. You picked out one of the most outperformed contracts in the league, and are claiming that as the standard for being paid appropriately.
Ok, than Tkachuk, Rantanen, Kucherov, there’s probably more…but whatever

If they play roughly half the special teams time that's 17.5 minutes. That qualifies as close to the 20ish I said.

Or if you want a compromise like TheWave suggested in his lineup by putting them on 3 lines, that's 15 mins each (play your 4th line 5 mins at ES and a bit on the PK for a total of 8ish mins) plus at least 5 mins on special teams for an even 20 mins.

Yes, Marner is not the only player in the league to outperform his contract. Some have outperformed to a greater extent, some to a lesser extent, and some to or below their contracts. Finding somebody who outperformed to a greater extent does not make Marner's pay inappropriate.

They average between 3.5 to 5.5 minutes of special teams total. That's 16-18 minutes. That's not really 20ish min. You're not going to improve by playing your best players less.

Outperform his contract? He’s been making $11 mil for the past 6 years, most of these guys have signed contracts for less money since that time and are better players. Its nuts

It seems like even though someone is on my ignore list, they can still bring some amusement into my life.

Outperform his contract, damn that's a good one!

He's been making 10.9m for 4.5 years, not 11m for 6, and yes, he's outperformed that. Players have signed for less money as worse players.

Sorry it was a 6 year contract. lol 10.9/11, big difference. You think Tkachuk, Rantanen and Kucherov are worse players?

.....and now we're back to the contract.
Imagine it being a requirement to evaluate a player

LOL

RFA contract mind you. Tough to outperform the TOP 10 salary while not being the TOP 10 player in this league..

Let me sum it up for you :DD

He outperformed his current RFA contract, players that signed for less (since his last signing ) = lesser players deserving less money, and thus once again proving how good his contract is.

And it gets even funnier when you look at playoff production relative to those other players

Who is better or worse than who now is pretty irrelevant, and I imagine it would sidetrack the discussion quite a bit.
Only stuff that happens prior to a contract impacts a contract.

Do people really exist who think cap hits are irrelevant? Just wow!

Cap deniers? I have a theory, they are actually a subset of flat Earthers.

On a side note, the current cap is 83.5M, Leafs income ranges from 140M to 281M (last year). Realistically we could spend 150M on players salaries, but when you consider we could finally pay Mitch what he's worth, we might still need league min fillers to ice the roster.

Mitch with 65 points… sitting 7-8 points back of Matthews 73 and Nylander 72.

I think Marner catches 1, if not both, to lead the team in points before the playoffs start.

I can see Nylander but Matthews will be tough unless Marner stops feeding him.

Be great for Leaf fans to see all get > 100.

For the record, on his current contract, Marner is 7th in points and 8th in points per GP, despite being 50th in PP ice time per game, and while bringing excellent defensive play and PKing. Pretty much all metrics that evaluate overall impact have him as a top player in the league, that consistently outperforms the average value of the cap space he takes up by a significant amount.

This reminds me of when years ago, I saw Jim Carrey do his impression of Jack Nicholson winning an Oscar. It went like this - "gosh I'm so happy I could drop a log".

I understand that Matthews chasing 70 goals could get people excited but how many get 100 points, who get the most points, whether or not Marner get more points than Nylander etc., who gives a flying f***? These guys are all members of the same team and you know what really would be great for Leaf fans? For the TEAM to finally go deep in the playoffs, now that would be something to get excited about the memories would last for a very long time!

I remember who scored the winning goal when we beat the Islanders in game 7 OT back in 1978. As for who led the team in points I have no idea, I couldn't care less and I'll bet hardly anyone else does either.

Every contract Dubas signed was excellent. Team construction excellent. Coaching excellent. All that perfection just destroyed by a lot of terrible luck.....

Marner has been on a bit of a heater lately.
Currently riding a 7 game point streak for 14 points.

I really enjoy watching him of late, he's been playing great defensive hockey for a couple months now, rarely turns it over, great reads and winning pucks all over the ice. Keefe made the comment last week that there's a reason that line has so much zone time, they win the puck in our end. People complaining about turnovers, what have you been watching lately, guy has been a master class.

The last couple weeks they have been putting on a forechecking, offensive zone clinic.
How anyone can not enjoy watching these two play right now is a little strange. It's great to be spoiled by such skill.
