Lol. I hear you bud. But, I am just not going to jump back on the bandwagon and claim we’re for real just based on 1 good game against a team ravaged with injuries/Covid isolation protocol situations. I have seen this song and dance with this team before and I refuse to get my hopes up until they, at the absolute least make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs.

Hey OP.

I guess you have seen something good from him now?

Oh you haters, i can feel your anxiety. The kid might look good from now on. What happens to our narrative? How am I going to throw more shit on him day by day?

Some people do go overboard with the criticism but Marner has a lot to prove in the playoffs. That is not going to get erased whether he's on a cold or hot streak during the season.

In his case, putting up 90-100 pts should be a given now. It's the bare minimum for an 11M player in his prime.

Where he has to make a name for himself is in the playoffs when the moves he pulled off tonight get shut down. That space disappears completely and defenders glue themselves onto him.

On the other hand, it's also important for fans to enjoy his successes. We're all waiting to see how he does in the playoffs but it's okay to enjoy the journey too.

Running Matthews & Marner on separate lines will do wonders for their playoff production. Just look at their playoff stats before Keefe. Pretty easy to shut them both down when they’re on the same line playing a 5 man unit dedicated 100% to shutdown duties

So I bad mouthed Marner enough, finally he played part of a game. Don't think he skates hard enough and did not see the ice in last 5 or 6 min.
Nice goal now do it at full speed....when you can make the other team fear you and back up the d and stop the pinching from all the other teams.
Hope he can do the same when he faces a team from Boston.

He always skates hard, if you can’t at least give him that, you’re too jaundiced to matter.

I want him the sjate hard and be in shape. When he skates hard and quivk his arms and stick are still. When he plays lazy and out of shape his stick sbf arms flail...watch.
I want nothing more for him to play like a top winger, score 90 points and show up when his girl friend tells him becareful. It is his skating at speed and quickness that makes him special and able to see the ice so well. Let's watch the Boston game and then comment.

Beautiful goal - great job Mitch! That was jaw-dropping and absolutely sick.

Love seeing him go to the net and sneaking around in the O-zone.

I partly agree with you here. The thing i was impressed with wasn't really the fact we scored a lot and won...It was the effort we gave on both ends...Compete level was top notch. I don't really care about the outcome that much because i believe if you give it your best, more often then not you'll win(especially if you also have talent). Now the question becomes, can they be consistent with that effort? I also liked the aggression factor especially by the young guys Ljilegren and Sandin. We were missing that big time.

is Mitch still going to be the whipping boy if we lose to Tampa or do we have to find a new one

i guess we can always revert back to our go to scapegoat and blame the goalie , lol

bare minimum? You’re saying that like it’s easy to do LOL

I never said it's easy.

But it's a bare minimum expectation for a guy being paid 11M (13% of the cap) in his prime. Those are the expectations he's welcomed onto his shoulders by signing that contract.

I'd say it's the same for Matthews too.

I don't think he said it was easy, just that for what he's being paid, that kind of production is expected and he's not wrong. I would also say that if he only puts up say 70 points this season, nobody will care if he puts up PPG+ in the playoffs and we win a couple of rounds. And by the same token, he could put up 120 points during the season but if he then gets 5 points in yet another 7 game first round exit, nobody will care about the 120 points either.

Don't expect fans to fall in love with Marner or any other player on the team until we have some playoff success, that's the bottom line. Great game last night for Mitch, let's hope it's a sign of things to come in the playoffs!

Yup. Same for Tavares, Nylander and really, the entire roster. It's a "what have you done for me lately" business so when the playoffs are over, we'll be judging these guys on how they played in the playoffs, not what they did in November. As the saying goes - that's life in the big city.

that makes sense, I guess that’s reasonable. I think the points will always come. Might vary but you’re right he is expected to produce for that type of money

that makes sense when you put it that way. & I don’t expect people to fall in love with him. But I just want people to appreciate what we have in him, Nylander, Matthews. Like all 3 are special. We used to have Ponikarovsky You know lol? We shouldn’t be so quick to get Rid of these guys

So to parse what you said....you think that the only utility to watching hockey is enjoying playoff performance?

Sure, all true. We still need team success in the playoffs though, that's always what it's all about and until that happens, it's hard to be happy about anyone being "special". Marner's an incredibly talented player, one of the most talented we've had in the last 50 years. I'd say he's almost a lock to put up PPG+ over the next 5-6 years during the season but the cold hard truth is that unless he can keep it up in the playoffs, it's not going to matter.

I personally don't want to get rid of anyone. I wanted to explore what we could get for Marner in the summer but that has as much to do with the flat cap and our lack of depth as it did with Marner's disappointing playoff production the last few years. Now that it's almost certain he'll still be a Leaf this coming spring, I'm rooting for him as hard as anyone the same way that I do for all our players.

Really nice game by Kerfoot JT and Mitch .. that line has what a solid line needs .. some defense/forecheck with Kerfoot due to his speed .. JT and Mitch making plays happen .. like i said over past 2 years those 2 guys move well together .. da FIT is perfect .. Hyman could also do it for them too .. Ritchie and Bunting not right partner for those 2

Not at all (and you're trying much too hard). I enjoyed the game last night for example, but if and when we win win a playoff series clinching game again, I'll enjoy it 100 times more.

For me, playoff success is the ultimate goal and everything that happens during the season, happens within that context. What about you - do you differentiate at all between the regular season and playoffs or is it all the same to you?
