This is why when people look at the NYI and wonder why they are so much better in the playoffs. It might seem like a simple thing (facial hair and suits as well as player numbers) but it makes the self disappear and puts the others in front of themselves. Sacrifice and caring about winning over what clothing your going to wear shows where a teams priorities lie.

When you encourage individuality to the extent that the Leafs do...how can they then complain that every player is not buying...pulling their weight etc...?

It just seems silly to think by catering to players over stupid things that it will result in on ice success. Have the players been so ill treated that we need to be extra nice to them? Or is it that we have treated them so nicely prematurely that we have the problems that we do? Marner cannot complain about the fans when he asked for this himself...he asked for all of it.

Perfectly said.

This is why Marner pisses me the F OFF. He is capable of so much more when he shows up to play he can have high impact on the outcome of the game

When he is just coasting you look at it and say wtf and scratch your head

players are going to have rough stretches or slumps. They aren’t going to be perfect 100% of the time: we have to accept that as fans. However he has not cheated us for effort the last two gamws

Yesterday Marner worked hard all game and he was rewarded at the end for that with the GWG on a lucky break and goalie out mistake, but still his effort created that opportunity.
He created the opportunity with the Muzzin goal and didnt get an assist. He created the great opportunity for Kerfoots shot that hit the post too.

I will say it until I am blue in the face: Marner and Matthews play better apart.

They get too damn cutesy putesy and are better separately.

They can be nutcracking buddies as much as they want after games, but before games and during, you gotta keep ‘em separated……

Heeey ay, come out and play! (Mitch)
You think Matthews has been playing better?

He actually had 2 real strong defensive plays that stood out where his back-checking effort and play away from the puck due to his compete level that stood out as a positive even when the points weren't coming offensively.

Ithink Matthews is playing like someone who hasn’t played in 4 months, missed all of training camp, and is still recovering after a wrist surgery.

Of anyone on the roster he gets the most leeway on his performance this far.

Nylander has picked up the pace, Marner needs to get out of his own head and perform better too.

Mitch needs to get on his horse like last night. That's the player Leafsnation fell in love with.

He needs to be a puck hound I think he got a little full of himself and forgot what was bringing him success and that's not the dingle dangle it's the second effort!

The good news is he has played better the last 2 games. The bad news is it has been Chicago and Detroit. Still 1 goal on the season (empty net) is not a smart spending of 11 million. Going to need way more.

We have clawed back to .500 by beating Montreal, Ottawa, Chicago, Detroit. 2 of those on back to back and a come from behind in there as well.

If this is what’s needed for momentum when we start facing the bigger challenges great, we will see moving forward. Need to start somewhere but I reserve judgement moving forward.

He also was largely responsible for Muzzins goal but didn’t show up on the score sheet on that one. Gained the zone, carried the opposition deep towards the slot and right side corner leaving the point-to-point pass open and Muzzin an open lane down the left to walk in and let it rip.

For what ever reason Marner and JT play well together . They both succeed with each other. I love the idea of Marner and matthews together but right now in their career’s its not working.

stick with JT and Marner they both had career highs playing with each other

Marner looked great last night, so a lot of crow for El dia de Muertos supper. Tavares looked great too.
Wise move splitting Marner and Matthews up. It's too easy to concentrate on shutting down that line and Marner feeding Matthews.
Matthews will start finding the net, and here's hoping in the meantime, that the others get some open ice.

Wrong JT did Marner did not if using 82 games as the season.

Marner did great last game. He seemed to be more engage and doing all the little things. Most of all, he is not over thinking.

Hopefully the next thread title is more mature.

you think that’s immature? Were we not waiting for something good from him? Good relative to cap hit I suppose would be better but that’s a huge title

I’ve seen plenty worse immature on here

One of things that I have always believed about forwards lines is player FIT is most critical .. while I was never a forward I did see it play out on many times as a kid, in junior and in pro hockey and then as a coach in GTHL .. having a shooter, a playmaker and a guy who can create room on ice on 1 line helps make them work .. as well as a defensive presence .. and da shooter and da playmaker have to move at a similar speed clip .. in Leafs case Willy and Matty (when in shape) both have above average speed (Willy a bit faster) .. also JT and Mitch are both slower than avg straight line speed guys too (Mitch a bit faster) .. it creates problems when one guy like Willy is SO MUCH faster than JT they don't find each other as much .. I have always thought it helps when guys straight line speeds are closer together so lines move up and down ice at similar speeds

I wanted to mention something similar when it comes to that first part. Hyman for example did a lot of work down low(which Mitch isn't good at doing) and then getting the puck to Marner so he can make plays because that's where his strength lies. Now they rely too much on Ritchie(well now it's Kerfoot which isn't ideal either as he isn't that strong along the wall). I'm not even defending his struggles because he pisses me off at times(and you can tell by my username that i'm a big fan) but it's too obvious that whom you play with matters big time(no matter what your skill level might be...Matthews would struggle without Willy).

In all fairness Matthews carried Johnsson and Kapanen to career seasons that got them paid......
