When I say drive the net, what I mean is how he played back when the Marleau Kadri Marner line was first put together, every time he had the puck he was attacking the net and then when he was pressured he'd pass to the open guy. Right now, it is hold the puck as long as I can and look for Matthews 24/7. I wanna see him play on a line where he knows he is THE guy and hope he rediscovers something, because right now he is not fun to watch

Shame the coach can't figure out how to help him rediscover his game.

Or get the PP going

Or get the team to come out flying at the start of the game

His best performance this season by a country mile in the last game

You could see the confidence coming back to him and the vision and passing getting crisper by the minute

Change nothing, keep him where he is and let him build on it because if he's not successful were in deep ****

I will say it until I am blue in the face: Marner and Matthews play better apart.

They get too damn cutesy putesy and are better separately.

They can be nutcracking buddies as much as they want after games, but before games and during, you gotta keep ‘em separated……

Heeey ay, come out and play! (Mitch)

He was speaking bit more from the heart too after the win in the post game. Sort of admitted to the struggles and was a little more humble about that which was refreshing. I think he's more relatable than trying to project strength by being defiant against criticism and constructive criticism.

Matthews and Marner are both great together, and great apart. Matthews was quite terrible yesterday. He was visible and in the play but it was a wild overstickhandling, over passing, over thinking, not driving to the slot and net type of thing. There were also some good signs as well, like being engaged battling Jones, eventually helping Nylander get the OT winner in that sloppy track meet.

I find Marner overthinks everything with Matthews and is way too predictable.

He is much more creative and quicker in his thinking when he is not always trying to look for Matthews to set up the highlight reel goal that never seems to come anymore.

I keep ‘em separated….

AM is waiting for Marner's pass and Marner is looking for AM all the time.
Marner stats might not be as good but he is a better player without AM.
AM is more a 200ft player instead of a being a scorer waiting for the pass on his sweet spots without Marner on his wing.

I just have this 10 minute period every morning lately where I ponder wtf is wrong with this guy. Today I was thinking how it really sucks knowing Keefe gives Marner more ice time than McDavid usually gets in the playoffs (19/20) and when McDavid is matching Marners ice time, he's not penalty killing. He's 100% focused on offence to the point he even cheats on defence to save energy for putting up points. I'd say he does it smart though. He'll back check if it's a must. I honestly wouldn't care if Marner did this especially since Tavares is always coming back. He doesn't have to be a defensive stud every single shift. Let the man breathe. He's an offensive wizard.

A comparable to Marner is Aho. Comparable as in first line offence as well as PK1. Aho tops out around 20 minutes in the playoffs. Marner is at a full 4 minutes higher. Overtime obviously skews playoff TOI but I'm confident Marner gets more ice time in regular settings. Carolina hasn't won a cup yet but everyone can agree Aho is not a problem in the playoffs.

Just to rub it in some more, when Hawks won the cup in 2013 and 2015, Patrick Kane did not have to do all the stuff Marner has to do and played less on average. Patrick F'in Kane.

Marner was 22 when this increase happened. 22! Keefe is as much to blame as Marner for this current mental block. Marners system got shook and then he got dragged by Toronto media and social media, now he's understandably in his own head.

Send Keefe the memo. Stop being a dummy with Marner. 2 points in 8 games. Ruined this guy. Even shit hockey Marner puts up points in his sleep. This current Marner definitely has much deeper issues that's why I'm dragging Keefe into it.

Good point. Marner had 94 points playing under 20 minutes. Last year he played over 22 minutes a night. Sydney Crosby (who use to PK as well) never played that much. Keefe really needs to chill.

Marner and Matthews belong on the same but sure don’t play like it.

Tavares and Marer both played better together when they were paid with each other.
As much as I hate them playing together they both succeeded and player their best hockey .

matthews and Nylander looked good together for a few years as well maybe Babs had that down .

this is gold

Matty changed that game on his own .. he decided to get vocal in room and then got physically engaged in leading team on ice .. lots of times in hockey I got wild and crazy and you miss more than you strike .. but it is da effort that matters .. guys see it and it changes emotional state of game .. hard to understand unless you played pro hockey .. it is not about stat pack .. stat pack does not win games .. players win games .. and when Matty decided to lead da team followed him

I'd even go so far as to say that all three of our 11 million dollar players should be carrying their own line. If they can't then they're not 11 million dollar players.

Exactly, soon as Lou moved on they loosened the facial hair rules, now they loosen the dress code rules. The inmates are running the asylum as they say

This is why when people look at the NYI and wonder why they are so much better in the playoffs. It might seem like a simple thing (facial hair and suits as well as player numbers) but it makes the self disappear and puts the others in front of themselves. Sacrifice and caring about winning over what clothing your going to wear shows where a teams priorities lie.

When you encourage individuality to the extent that the Leafs do...how can they then complain that every player is not buying...pulling their weight etc...?

It just seems silly to think by catering to players over stupid things that it will result in on ice success. Have the players been so ill treated that we need to be extra nice to them? Or is it that we have treated them so nicely prematurely that we have the problems that we do? Marner cannot complain about the fans when he asked for this himself...he asked for all of it.

This is why Marner pisses me the F OFF. He is capable of so much more when he shows up to play he can have high impact on the outcome of the game

When he is just coasting you look at it and say wtf and scratch your head
