This is true but not when evaluating a GM. If Tavares doesn't come through, it's on Tavares. If your GM doesn't want to sign Tavares in 2018 when he's saying you're his no.1 destination, you replace your GM with one that does.

I personally think this is borderline facts but people are too far gone in anger to accept this view.
This isn't borderline facts. It's facts. Fans will chew up Dubas for the signing but no NHL organization will.

Marner on the other hand....way too much. Right now he doesn't have the strength to withstand teams best defenders. Life is better when he's away from Matthews so it's time to retire that duo.

Broadly speaking, the players are the greedy ones is one of the greatest feats of grifting ever produced. Just a master class in manipulation by billionaire owners who jack up ticket prices, sell pieces of fabric with a logo on it for hundreds of dollars, all while suppressing the salaries of the labour who generates their revenue.

Seems to be some unidentified force that doesn't allow Marner to be sheltered. 1/100000 powerplay with no changes for 1.5 seasons in a row is proof. You don't lose a first round series to the Habs putting up horrible stats (real stats) and get to come back with your same line mates because of xGF. If the coaches are running a country club in there it's time to remove them.

I'm left wondering who the next whipping boy will be to blame all our problems on if we trade Marner .

too bad for Mitch that Andy isn't around anymore . lol

so's Johnny but he get's a free pass for some reason and at least Mitch will pick it up , Johnny i'm not so sure of
Go post about Tavares' struggle in a thread of his own then?

Never understood this narrative with struggling players. Yes this player is playing bad but why are you talking about it when you could actually be talking about this other player playing bad! Leave my favourite player alone!

John is getting clapped what do you mean lol

It's just not all in one place like this thread. It's dispersed everywhere.

Mitch is the whipping boy because he wants to be treated as a star player on his team but isnt performing at that level. With his skill set he needs to be putting up points right now.

Keefe didnt say it directly, but how can you blame a player like Ritchie for his production when the player driving that line is playing uninterested. Keefe said you cant blame Ritchie when both of his linemates arent playing to their capabilities. But what he really meant is that its Marner that isnt playing. You cant blame Matthews when he has only played in 2 games this far and coming off surgery. Marner needs to drive that line.

There are two far two expensive player on this team
Marner and Tavaras, it is simple as that
Tavaras has been a minus play most seasons in the NHL.

Tavares wears the C but he’s not in charge. Neither is Muzzin for all his comments.
They can’t make anyone buy into what the others don’t want to.

It’s not like in Boston when Bergeron/Chara/Krejci tried to work with Kessel to play the identity. Not going to happen.

the narrative on this thread is that Marner destroyed the team single handily so i just thought i'd add perspective

Marner was a first team all star last year , shit the bed with the rest of the team minus a few players in the playoffs and has gotten off to a bad start but that doesn't mean he's all of a sudden some worthless piece of crap that's killing the team .

the fan reaction has gone overboard and i have no idea why he's taking the brunt of it since he hasn't been the worst Leaf

also he's far from my fav player , lol

This is likely due to the fact that every other sports league has flexibility with contracts. This is not the case in the NHL. Once a player signs the contract, you're essentially stuck with it. In every other sport there are so many options to get rid of a contract from an underperforming player.

Hypothetically speaking Marner could produce at a 40 point pace the rest of his contract and the leafs would just be stuck with it. Yeah of course fans are gunna talk about that. If his contract was in the NFL he could just get cut and be done with it.

Exactly! Marner did not create those rules. So I’m not sure why the salary cap stuff is being placed on him. He’s not a GM, he has no obligation to consider the salary cap. Would it have been nice IF he did? Yes. But he’s not obligated to. Nor should that be an expectation for players. But leave it to leaf land to feel like he should be.

the NHL has created this problem. Tampa is going through it right now. It’s absolutely stupid that they lost a full line. A luxury tax based salary cap needs to be implemented so that a Marner contract can be moved

THANK YOU

The Hockey Writers Kevin Armstrong takes a stripe off Mitch for his Pens post-game comments vs. Muzzin's:

"Marner is public enemy number one to a frustrated and disgruntled fan base. Instead of trying to appease the fans, he seems to be ramping up efforts to be hated.

The first thing he said after losing 7-1, “I don’t think we can be concerned.” Wrong answer. Sure, he shouldn’t say cry and yell. Still, some accountability, regret, and even shame should be the first things relayed from a leader after that disgrace.

Muzzin said all the right things, “obviously not good enough, we come out slow, we get our game going, we gave up a few, we let them take over, and we have no fight."

No one wanted or expected the players to get in the fetal position during the post-game media conference. But they can learn from Muzzin’s comments. When a fan base is this concerned, and rightfully so, you have to acknowledge that it’s not good enough, and you will be better. So put the ‘A’ on Muzzin; there’s an unused one on Marner’s jersey."

Tavares is part of a core that doesn’t work.
It’s not all on an individual but the sum of the parts.

We have half the Cap in 4 forwards and next year our top D + goalie are UFA. Can’t keep going with the same model.

Keefe is an idiot for calling out AM/MM in the media .

you don't start shitting on your best players 5 games in , this isn't jr where he can scare kids and it seems he's too stupid to realize he's far easier to replace than the teams star players if they decide to quit on him

if he has a problem with how they played he should have discussed it with them privately instead of trying to put on a tough guy show for the media

You're assuming the players listen to what the coach says to the media. I doubt very much they do.

I agree he shouldn't rip them in the Media ... just pointing out their lack of response .

I don't think Keefe is the sharpest knife in the drawer.

If you're an already rich person (who is about to become substantially richer no matter what) who is also quite affected by what people think of you and you still choose the former option, you're stupid (and/or greedy) in a way that defies description.

Great points....This is the crux of everyone's argument when it comes to MM and his salary. It's not like he would have been playing for $750k and the team banked the extra money if he took a little less. The big thing here is "Are you ok with being filthy rich or do you need to be extra filthy rich?" I still insist that if MM took $2m less he would be off the radar pretty much for exclusive criticism and most would land on JT's lap.

Also, this idea that the cap was going to go up never really addressed a big point. The cap going up means the players ready to sign are going to want more than they would have received without a cap bump. So Hyman signs for maybe $6.5-7M instead of $5.5M and so on. It should be % of cap we are concerned with because the devil is in the details.

sorry if i made it seem otherwise but i did understand your point and it does seem like they gave a f/u to Keefe over his comments

this is why the NHL is the least entertaining big four sport. No other sport critiques their players on contracts as much as the NHL and their fans. Cry over everything. In no other sport do players really leave money on the table. There’s this weird code in the NHL that’s so outdated. It’s also why NHL stars never maximize their career earnings.

each player has a brand that they need to take care of, they need to make sure their value is where they want it. It doesn’t make them greedy it makes them smart. Its their body they are putting on the line. Not yours, so you have no right to make any comments on anything lol. It’s not even your money LMAO.

Good for Connor for taking less to appease the fans, it’s still a bad financial decision. The notion that EVERYONE has to take less to appease the fan base is just complete horse shit.

Those sports don’t have hard salary caps so the onus then goes back to the owner willing to pay the luxury tax.

Marner could ask for 20 million a year and no one would care if the cap wasn’t there. The Leafs are rich enough to ice three NHL teams and have money leftover so that would never be an issue. Since there is a cap, he is now directly hurting the team and that’s what sours fans.

As for sacrificing his body, the entire sport is built on putting your body on the line. You don’t join the UFC and then refuse to take a punch. You don’t join the NFL and then shy away from tackles. Same goes for playoff hockey. You take a hit to make a play. This is something Marner struggles with.

Like I said Marner is within his rights to ask for the moon but it also reveals his mindset. It’s selfish. Dubas should have got a read on it by now and sent him packing. Once the selfishness trickles into the player’s play or interviews, it’s time to send them packing.
