A linemate of his already scored 60 in a season and he didn't break 100 points. Why will he suddenly put up 23% more points if a linemate hits 60 for a second time?
The original post said a teammate would have to score 60 for him to get 120. Someone else said if he got 120, Matty would definitely get 60. I just pointed out that the original suggestion was the reverse.

I could see two players getting 60 each without Mitch getting 120, although that's unlikely. I could also see him getting 120 without anyone getting 60, but that's even less likely.

I personally think Matthews and Nylander is a better duo and JT and Marner play better together. I’m not sure the data supports it though. But I completely agree, I’ve never understood why Marner’s performance is used as the baseline for the Maple Leafs playoff push.

There is some solid reason to split them up. Both players can generate their own scoring chances and it leaves the other team off balance with defending.

This is why I’ve been adamant in the playoffs Marner and Matthews cannot play together. You kind of see Marner rub off on Matthews and they both get out of wack. I think Matthews and Nylander should be the duo we lean on offensively in the playoffs. Put Mitch with JT and let them take advantage of weaker match ups. At some point you have to sit the two down and explain that we all know they wanna play together but it’s better for them to be separated

Nylander and matthews had been trash together in playoff, they was unable to move out of defensive zone most of the time they was together. Thats why keefe separated them pretty fast too.

Yea, the numbers are pretty clear:
Playoffs the last 3 seasons:

5v5:
Matthews/Marner without Nylander:
TOI: 295:37
Shot Differential: 58.22
xGF%: 64.42
Goal Differential: 61.72

Nylander/Matthews without Marner:
TOI: 63:31
Shot Differential: 47.97
xGF%: 53.58
Goal Differential: 0.00 (Not on for one goal scored!)

Nylander/Matthews/Marner on the same line:
TOI: 34.58
Shot Differential: 60.46
xGF%: 59.76
Goal Differential: 100.00

I think an interesting move would be to send out all 3 players more often but when it comes to just putting Matthews and Nylander out there together in the playoffs, I don't think there's been a more disappointing top 6 line combo for us in the playoffs.

I'm a big fan of juggling things around right now to see what gels with the new bodies. Might see some new lines show some chemistry for sure.

Ultimately, Marner/Matthews have been one of the best duos in hockey since they were put together and that includes the playoffs. Feels like the team has better depth this time around which is going to help a ton.

I can show you lots of 4th liners capable of winning a board battle and sticking a puck to a teammate who's behind the goalies net lol. The creator of that goal is the 13 million dollar former hart trophy winner and two time rocket winner turning it into a goal from behind the net.

The guy is fairly tiny at 170lbs(when you compare to most others who are anywhere from 30-60 lbs more)...The fact he did that shows a lot courage too especially when a guy that is 6'3 or so and 240 lbs roughly can't do it. He's been our points leader who also has been one of our best PK'ers and just general work ethic amongst the best on this team.

100% trade Marner. Try to acquire a real NHL goalie.
Who wants him, his $10.893m cap hit, an upcoming contract negotiation and is willing to give up market value ?

Marner will probably hit his stride by November.
Is that the stride that lasts 5 months ? Asking for a friend.

He has a NMC, can't be traded.
He can be traded with his permission.

I don’t think Treliving will be around after this season anyway so I don’t know how or who they trade, but they don’t want to waste anymore of Matthews‘ yrs and have to somehow get that stud D.

Maybe it’s already too late.

Yes and there is no way he agrees to it.

LOL to trading Marner for a goalie. That would be the worst trade of all time.

Marner should not be traded. He carries this offense more than any other player on this team and is arguably the best defensive forward we have.

You can make do with a FA goalie, but they need a couple of quick high end D.
The options are to wait and either find them through FA or the draft, or trade one of Nylander or Marner. The risk is they open another hole by trading either of those guys.
They’re in no man’s land and that’s the worst place to be.

Huh? Where is he going?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Marner was the guy they move to help rebuild the D.
Ever heard of this thing called a NMC?

The opportunity to trade Marner ended a long time ago.

Waive from a franchise who's assuredly going to pay him the most money as a UFA and continue to make more than any other player in the league in sponsors.

but yeah he'll waive to go to Anaheim or some shit

Marner won't be traded unless he agrees to it, it's not going to happen, simple as that.

In the regular season, he's like Aquaman and Wonder Woman rolled up into one and he's such a joy to watch, just watching him kill penalties is worth the price of admission as the saying goes. Problem is in the playoffs - the bigger the games get, the more he fades away. He hit rock bottom with the season on the line in game 3 against Florida when he looked more like Tweety Bird than a superhero and we're stuck with him now, so nothing to do but hope that he somehow "figures it out".

I thought more teams were allowed to trade than just Anaheim.

Maybe all he wants is money and endorsements. Maybe he’ll cash another 4 yr deal and then move on to a contender.

He’s the only entertaining player on the team.

It feels like this might be Shannahan’s last season.

Shanahan signed an extension he ain’t going anywhere. If anyone is getting fired it’s Keefe. MLSE loves Shanny, maybe the on ice product hasn’t been what we expected, but he’s really helped bridge that gap between the alumni and the club and I think MLSE has wanted someone to do that for a long time.

The on ice product has been OK, but if Shanahan stays then I wouldn’t expect them to ever be Cup contenders. Treliving hasn’t impressed me since his first press conference.
