Marner for Seth Jones.

Hawks get a top line RW who puts up 90pts a year, elite on the PK and would be a great winger and role model for Bedard.
The Leafs get a #1 top pairing dman who would take a lot of pressure off Rielly.

Why would Marner waive his NMC? He's going to want to get paid and he will want to put up points paying with AM and WN on the powerplay which will increase his points totals; he will use that to justify a pay increase.

Except he's not. Not with 1 x year remaining and 11M. That 11M is better spent elsewhere. I don't understand why any team would pay him 11M just to be a regular season performer.

Marner just tanked his value in this series.

Two reasons.

1. You've gotta get to the playoffs before you can focus on winning in them.
2. You (as another team) may believe that bringing in a guy of his skill set may help him fit into your competitive culture, versus in Toronto where he has to set the culture.

The $11m is a tough deal to absorb for most decent teams, however after July 1 he is a very attractive retention target as his salary is league minimum IIRC.

A few reasons.

1. Players generally don't want to be where they're not wanted.

2. Toronto will probably make it clear that they're not going to entertain signing him at $11m again.

3. Coming to a team as an $11m player is a tough thing to do. Most teams don't have $11m in free cap space to just "add" a guy.... it would often require multiple other pieces to be shipped out.

By participating in a trade now (which would likely involve some retention with a 3rd team), he gets himself "in the door" of a good team in what is likely the $6-8m range, and then gives that team a year to adapt their salary structure to fit his next deal in.

Big name players generally do not want to actually go all the way to UFA.

You know those general managers that are considered dinosaurs that will overpay for playoff experience, hard checking forwards that play with bite?

These are the same guys you are going to be selling Marner to. I would have to assume Marner is on the opposite side of that spectrum.

The only playoff team that is smart enough to know Marner’s value on the defensive side of the puck and have a great analytics team would be Carolina, however they are smart enough to also not trade for players with one year remaining and even smarter to not sign a huge ticket like that.

For him to waive, it would have to be an appealing destination like Boston, NY, Miami, LA, or Chicago. Pittsburgh might be a viable option due to Dubas and playing with Sid.

The return is also an interesting item of discussion. Leafs fans wanting a big haul might be underestimating the value of the freed up cap space. A team like Chicago could take him at full salary and might like the idea of putting him on Bedard’s wing. Since they’re still kind of rebuilding however, the willingness to part with a treasure trove of picks/prospects might be a steep ask.
Omg, that's Taylor Halls music!

Would Kyle Davidson really want to sign Marner for $11M+?

For every team that gets eliminated by virtue of being beaten up in a playoff series, there's probably another who looks at themselves and says "we were just out-skilled".

The Kings probably said that to themselves. The Predators are probably saying that to themselves. The Jets probably said that to themselves. The Islanders and Capitals almost certainly said that to themselves. The Stars will probably say that to themselves if they lose game 7.

There's also teams that are "on the cusp" that don't have enough to get into the playoffs. New Jersey, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, St. Louis, Minnesota, Calgary.

No offense but the excuses are running out. It's been too long to improve the D and goaltending. Trying to move around that and attacking someone like Marner (not saying you are), is ignorance.
Dubi was fired cause he wanted to break up the core 4 last summer. Shanny fired him then called all 4 guys and told them that they weren't getting traded.

Mitch didn't have a NTC until July 1 last summer so he could have gone to anyone with 2 years on his deal for a great return. Now he'll go for pennies on the dollar.

Only way Marner agrees to a trade is if a 7-8 x +$11.5 mil deal is in place. If not, he'll be better off sticking with the Leafs.

overseas...
Maybe Utah will trade 1st round pick+players for Marner? So far, MM has been complete ghost in playoffs so he’s trade value could be quite low. At least among current contenders.

I do think he is likely to refuse to waive even if management makes it clear they have no interest in re-signing him. The coach can't bench/demote him without creating a rancid atmosphere in the locker room, so he will still get his regular season points to help him with his next contract.

I honestly can't believe Dubas has a job as POHO and GM after the Marner, Tavares, and Rielly contracts. It's shocking.

I thought this trade should have went down with CBJ (with some adds to TO at the time) but now I don't see why Chicago does this.

Jones is a top pairing Dman and they will be good sooner than later with Bedard and their prospect pool. Hawks have enough offensive weapons on the way. They trade the most important position for the least important and create a huge hole + potentially ruin the development of their young D in the process. This ship has sailed

Let him eat popcorn until he Wave or sign what he is worth or let him walk.

No sane Gm with cup aspirations will give him 10.9 or the rumored 12 he will ask for. Some lottery teams maybe give him 9 m . Leafs overpayed him with 2-3 m at the time.

He need to grow up from his self image, perhaps a change of scenery and a contract he can live up to make a difference.
