Some players just don't perform well in the playoffs and especially in pressure filled markets. Even Joe Thornton himself..a beast in the regular season struggled in the playoffs a lot. I do think he started to have some better years in San Jose but he probably was never going to be successful in Boston where there was more pressure to perform. Bruins traded him and then they went on to win a cup and Thornton almost won with San Jose (almost a win-win). There has to be a price for a lack of success in the playoffs. Marner at some point in his career might be a better playoff performer, but Leafs can't wait for that to happen forever either. Still waiting for some of my feelings to settle down, but its really hard for me to go on watching this same core with the belief that they'll win in the playoffs. I'll enjoy the playoffs for now stress free atleast.

Mitch has learned over da years that he loses every board battle he has ever engaged in .. so why would a weak guy even try? .. da video clip above is one of many .. games of either strength or flat out speed he can't do well at .. so avoid each .. you can carry one of these types of players in playoffs if they score goals for you .. too many Miks etc and you are 1st round fodder like Laffs

I honestly can’t stand this guy. Asked for him to be dusted two years ago and it only gets worse. So sick of him and his antics

Afraid to take the hit to make a play. Did not want to be the first man on the puck on the boards.

Did Marner actually fake trying and thought he would fool people watching? OMG! He obviously saw where the puck was and refused to be the first guy to get it...so he just pretends to skate into the area...this is Game 7, right?! How could the Leafs ever win with a player like this?

lo yep

Is there any more info on the whole "he'll only play on the PP his way thing" just curious if there are more reports from reputable sources

He is cemented as a pad statter and a playoff choker. Down right gutless and disgusting performance.

I've seen enough of him and his atrocious contract. Get him off the team. Rebalance the team with his salary

Saw that same play from more than 1 Leaf in the series including one heralded as the only star who showed up lol.
Marnercis taking the hear. I get it.
But he did have some great set up not finished. Others wouldn't go first to take a hit to make a play also.
How many Leafs played at or above expe tations? 4 maybe 5?

The whole team played a perimeter game.
Spezza, Brodie, Kerfoot paid the price.

Unfortunately I don't agree with this at all. If he was making 9.5mil and put up the performance he just did there would 100% be calls for him to be gone. He's a top line player that just played like dogshit.

People get way too bent out of shape about the contract. How about just look at the player, where he is slotted and judge him on that?

If you have a player that makes $6.5mil playing on your top line that puts up ppg in the regular season multiple seasons in a row, and then puts up 0.5 ppg for multiple playoffs in a row. Are you going to be like, oh well, he makes less money he gets a pass, no you would judge him based on what he is expected to do based on where he slots in the lineup and what he does in the regular season.

You rely on your best players no matter how much they make. The reality is, Mitch was/is a top line player. I don't care if he's making 20mil, or 1mil, a top line player that plays at PPG pace in the regular season should be better when the real games start.
I didn't say he'd be taking no heat whatsoever. Just significantly less if he signed a fair contract without all that negotiation drama. It still weighs heavy on all our minds.

Agree with you. The fact that Aho, Rantanen and Point signed less than Marner in the same off season is not a good look on Marner. The love message video is worst than the JT letter to Islanders fans. No doubt playing in Toronto is a different beast but keep your head down, get things done and keep your mouth shut will always work in any markets and any sports.
His contract, fashion sense, or how he wants to play on PP won't be a problem if he is leading the team in playoffs and winning. The moment he decided he should get paid like a top player in the league, it is the moment he needs to back it up. Just like the moment someone got drafted First overall, he better back it up with his play or he will be call a bust regardless of why the team choose him over the other players.

This play pretty accurately describes how we play much of the time.
This isnt even just a Marner issue as I've actually seen Matthews pull that same move and Nylander also. Not willing to take a hit to make a play and too often taking shortcuts on plays that you need to sacrifice the body in dangerous areas. Nylander was better in this regard this series and Matthews for certain stretchs but as a whole too often this core wants to take the path of least resistance and that doesnt fly in the postseason.

My dad is a big Marner fan but when that play happened he just shook his head and said that's unacceptable.

Guaranteed Mitch takes a lot less heat if his contract negotiations were more civil and the number came out to less than $10 million. $9.5 million with little fanfare or assholery from his agent and no one even blinks an eye, especially in contrast to Nylander's negotiations which went on for far too long. He had a golden opportunity to cement himself as a fan favourite who could do little wrong and he blew it.

We saw Matthews come into training camp carrying less weight in hopes of increasing his speed to help his defensive game. And it indeed helped. We saw him try to be more physical this year. And he was. His physical game in the playoffs, although not perfect, was decent. And it will get better. My point is that Matthews is working very hard to become a more complete player. And it shows. Has Marner been working on bulk and strength improvements? His skating? His shot? If he has I haven't seen it. What we see is what we get. I guess..

Contract situation, being petty over not getting ELC bonuses 3 years later with a different GM, calling up Dougie when he was demoted to the 4th line and saying theyre thinking about asking for a trade, not wanting to be moved off the half wall on the PP. This is just what has slowly been leaked, who knows what else there is.

can you post some links? would like to read it

cannot wait till dubas/shanahan/marner are kicked out of this team

In a hard cap system you cannot separate the contract from the performance. Winner get value out of the money they sped and loser over pay for underperforming players. It’s a simple as that
