So why did he have trouble driving a line with jt on it for the whole season?

I would argue that Marner had poor season because in previous regular seasons he drove the lines he was in and really elevated the games of those around him.

What talent? The talent that starts packing for the cottage in April?
The ones we want a small fortune for because they aren't worth the same here as the rest of the league thinks.

I'm fine to move on but pretending they don't have talent is just laughable

Oh Marner is talented no doubt. Unfortunately he turns it off when the team needs him the most.

Do you seriously think players play games 1 and 2 at the same level they play games 6 and 7 when their backs are up against the wall and it is usually win or go home?

Do you know why Justin Williams is known for ? Hint, not for what he does in games 1 and

He thinks hockey is simulation not a physical sport played by elite, highly competitive athletes.

If you can’t trade Mitch then at least wait and see what happens next Spring before you extend him. If he miraculously has a strong playoff and the Leafs go deep then great, go for it. But if it’s the same lacklustre result then just walk away. The only real power the Leafs have right now is that they can control whether Mitch is here for the next 8 years or somewhere else.

For someone so good at retrieving the puck, you'd think he would have more than 35 takeaways (tied for 179th in the league).

Going into the corner and winning a puck battle doesn't count as a takeaway, if it did then Hyman would have a helluva lot more than 35.

How much harder are games 6 and 7? I don't know the answer so I am hoping a mind brighter than mine can tell me in a %, how much more difficult games 6 and 7 are than 1 and 2.

Why don't players try to win all the games the same amount? Seems idiotic to wait until your back is against the wall.
Because they’re human not robots. Have you ever played in a seven game series or playoff series or any competitive sport ? Because if you had, you wouldn’t be asking these questions. You would get it.

I expect Marner to play hard during a contract year, and then return to floating once the ink is dry on a long term deal.

How much harder, that's all I am asking.

This is not a hard question, you are claiming that they are harder, just a % of how much harder, that's all I want to know.

Taking the puck away from someone doesn't count as a takeaway? Can you explain this to me?

The D is usually the first person on the puck, so they had possession, and then Hyman is hard on the forecheck and wins the puck off them, this is called what?

There is a difference....

M. Tkachuk wanted out of Calgary; Tre didn't want to trade Tkachuk or let Gudreau walk as UFA

We want Marner to be traded to improve the team or worst case scenario walk as a UFA

The 90 points crap needs to die already. We need WINS and PLAYERS who produce when IT MATTERS! Having 4 forwards next year at 11+ AAV is absolutely STUPID. This is Dubas BULLSHIT again trying to f***ing do that nobody in the league is doing because of some galaxy braining shit

There are in total 32 teams in the league of which 16 make the playoffs and of which 8 team go on to play 2nd round and beyond. Not all of require "Marner" to be successful.

This player worship needs to end. TEAM matters more than player. LOGO on the front matters more than name on the back. Period!
Amen.

I don't think you need to play extremely high levels of hockey to know anything about it, but since you are bringing it up, what is the highest level you played? Mine is only AAA with/against a lot of current NHLers.

I'd be curious to know how long ago you played and what level. It's got to be pro (a top 10 league hopefully) and within the last 10 years the way you are speaking.

I would trade MM for futures and use that cap and sign Marchesaault and Stephenson. One top alpha and another who just plays like an Alpha.
Sounds good to me. They need to re-stock the cupboards anyway.

Five years pro.

What league? What were your stats? How long ago? Why didn't you continue a career? Not that good?

Right now I just assume you're a liar, so it would be nice to get some more info to validate this.

here are some "nuggets: from Marner in clinching or momentum swinging games

Game 7 against habs - offensive zone turnover by marner when game was tied 0-0 (I can list many STUPID plays by marner in the habs series if you want)

Game 6 against bolts in OT (first time around) - stupid pass AND then STUPID DEFENSE (again could list many STUPID plays by marner if you want including Game 7)

Game 2 against Florida Leafs had a 2-0 lead and then Marner being a complete buffoon (at 1:50 mark)

Marner was a f***ing GHOST in that series against Florida

Game 7 against Bruins this year (I could add others from the series where he was complete ASS)

And ofcourse Game 7 OT Marner being a complete ASS

I could list many btw.... People often forget that little things matter in the game and Marner more often than not is a COMPLETE JOKE! 11 AAV is too much for a player like that who continues to make glaring mistakes and important times; and people are wanting that Leafs re-up this buffoon of a player for 12.5+ AAV on an 8 year term? HELL if that is not enough they effing want 4 forwards on the team with 11AAV+

COME ON MAN!

This franchise under Shanahan is a joke...Shanahan recently talked about his experience and how the Red Wings with Yzerman took awhile to be successful, and compares the Leaf players to someone like Yzerman...if you hear him talk, you'd think he was comparing Marner to Yzerman, lol...and Shanahan must have forgotten there wasn't a salary cap then...Leafs are doomed to fail if they re-up Marner for another 8 years...the guy is the most overrated player in the league, and was massively overpaid for his current contract, having never hit 100 pts, averages 24 goals per season, weak shot and chokes in the playoffs...and now is seeking a raise to $12.5 mlllion...imagine paying Marner for 6 more years at $12.5 million per after he turns 30...what a joke!

Don't you want to validate your opinion (it isn't actually validated just because you played 5 years as a punching bag getting brain damage in the EIHL)?

Seems weird to say something about needing to play hockey to know it and then not wanting to prove how intelligent you are on the topic of hockey.

If the D had full control of the puck, then they would score it a takeaway. But the term "puck battle" implies that possession is up for grabs, like a jump ball in basketball so winning a puck battle isn't a takeaway.

That's my impression anyway, I'm sure there are people who know the rulebook better than I do so maybe someone else will chime in.

I just don't know why MM wants to come back. He must know by now that he is mentally weak, like very weak. If he signs an extension and come back, i expect him to struggle from the start. As he has never shown as a Leafs the 'I got this', 'I am going to make the other team my b*t*h.' attitude, actually, the only one who showed that attitude is Knies.
Which is why it is difficult for our top guys to overcome adversity when the going gets tough.

We need more alphas like Knies and not betas like the core 5.

Hopefully, they are signing MM according to the market and not what they think he is worth.
If the market is showing MM's trade value is bad, thats just show other teams don't value him as much too.

At this point I don’t think Marner even wants to come back. It seems like it’s Ferris feeding information to the media to keep Marner’s value high. I think if we were to catch Marner in a candid moment he would say he wants out.

But they have to play this song and dance, Marner himself probably doesn’t want it out there that he wants out. So they’ve got to make it seem like Toronto is driving the bus on this.

There's no definitive standard on giveaways/takeaways. Depends on the person doing the stats.

THUNDER BAY – Mitch Marner is used to having people watch his every move on the ice.

On Friday evening, the Toronto Maple Leafs star found everyone’s eyes on him in a different sport.

The 27-year-old forward threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Port Arthur Stadium for Friday night’s Northwoods League game between the Thunder Bay Border Cats and the Duluth Huskies.

Serving in the role of catcher was Border Cats shortstop Greg LaChance, who is Marner’s brother-in-law.

“There might have been a little bit of extra pressure as he’s a lot better at baseball than I am,” Marner said.

“I haven’t thrown a first pitch since 2017 (before a Toronto Blue Jays game) and I don’t have a very good arm, so I was trying to get the ball over the plate and in the strike zone.”

Marner said Friday marked the first time that he had been able to see LaChance play since he was in high school.

“It’s amazing for me and my wife (Stephanie) to come and support Greg and show him our love,” Marner added. “He’s had some amazing seasons in college and we’re excited to watch him do his thing.”

Yeah, like with most stats, I was just speculating based on what my "common sense" definition would be.

But in any case, I thought it was pretty much kommon knowledge that Hyman is is really good at winning puck battles and using the giveaways/takeaways stat to show otherwise makes no sense anyway because that's not the same thing.
