You aren't wrong.

I can't ever see this group scoring much in the playoffs.

Matthews' game doesnt translate to the playoffs either.

Sad team really.
Matthews will be expected to step it up once Mitch is gone. If he doesn't, I will be disappointed. Guentzel might be a good fit with Matthews.

'Mitch Marner prefers to stay with the Leafs and become a UFA, with his camp promoting this idea publicly."

Battle is on already.

Mitch knows he's gotta go.

The worst part about Mitch playing next season is it tanks another season of Matthews and Nylander. We won't be able to upgrade the team for next season. And if we think Mitch is weak now, wait until he's lame duck and getting booed by the fans. So I hope he changes his mind, but if he doesn't it's out of the team's control. Thanks Dubas.
It feels like we're getting closer to waffles and salute gate territory. I've been to a lot of live games in the Matthews and Marner era and aside from the game 7 loss to Tampa I've never heard Marner or any of them get booed and there are jersey's everywhere. It'll be interesting to see if that changes this season. If it does then I agree he may just say move me.

I'm saying we need offense. Guentzel 38 playoff goals in 69 games, 45 goal pace.

I think Leafs can use an offensive D besides Rielly who can shoot and run the #1PP unit that will automatically generate more offense

Once Tavares is off the cap then we can add a forward if needed.

It's already beyond that.

... on teams that want them.

You are missing the key feature.

THE TEAM ISN'T INTERESTED.

But when did the team say that exactly? I watched the press conference and know they said they want to make changes and they admitted to making the same mistakes over and over again but how do we know for sure that the plan wasn't to bring in Berube and see if he can change Marner's game? A lot of the fans and media are souring on him but I keep hearing from Berube and all the others about what a great guy he is. Maybe the plan is to move somebody else. A lot of people are hoping the team can move him, and if it's for a good return I'd agree we go for it, but we don't know anything yet.

Marners camp anchoring first through public channels ain't a good sign. I suspect to facilitate a trade now includes communicating that Marner is not part of the long term program...or next years program.

That would be pretty bold, and Marners camp probably betting they won't go down that road. Ferris is aggressive and life is going to get complicated for Tre if he decides to battle.
Must be something in the water.

Marner is now part of the new generation of the Muskoka 5 legacy of the past.

Leafs new GM on record as saving "having no appetite to talk new contract this summer with Marner" and his agent Darren Farris responding with "does not plan on engaging in them any time soon either",

Stalemate (for now).

But can't imagine Marner is feeling the love of a wanted man in Toronto right now, even though he self described himself as ,,, "We're looked upon as kind of gods here, to be honest. Something that you really appreciate the love that you get here from this fan base" in his post season interview..

Earlier on Wednesday, The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun reported that the Marner camp wants to let next season unfold and see what happens instead of entertaining all the rumours on a possible move this summer.

As of now, it is said that Marner is focused on honoring the final year of his deal and hasn’t submitted any list of preferred trade destinations to Maple Leafs’ management.

LeBrun also indicated there seems to be little appetite on Toronto's part to discuss a contract extension this summer. There could be talks later on depending on how the season goes. David Alter also cited LeBrun reporting Leafs GM Brad Treliving acknowledged Marner holds all the cards in this situation. However, Treliving stated he wouldn't trade the winger simply for the sake of doing so.

In his latest for The Athletic, LeBrun revealed that even though the Leafs have not attempted to engage in extension talks, Marner's camp, led by the notorious Darren Ferris, does not plan on engaging in them any time soon either, which will complicate matters for the Leafs this off-season.

A lot can happen during this summer. The Leafs could receive a trade offer that's too good to pass up from a club that Marner would consider a suitable trade destination.

However, that possibility has shrunk over the past month as the difficulty of moving Marner's contract becomes the key factor.
Can you highlight his quote?

Saw this on twitter. One way or another this deadweight will not be a leaf if not right away at least end of next season

This makes no sense. You want to stay with the team you are on but want to become a UFA.
The only reason you do this is to take them to the cleaners. Betting you can have a monster year and demand 13 million.
Tell him he won’t be re-signed. Enjoy your UFA. You control the no trade, but you won’t be a Leaf for life.

Marner loses.

He's not the sharpest tool. He isn't the type of player to perform well under pressure.
Face facts Mitch.
Seems pretty risky for Mitch, but it doesn't matter if he wins or loses, it only matters if the Leafs win or lose, and if they don't get assets for him the Leafs lose this battle.

Ferris is letting them know right off the bat, if they even want to battle about it they are going to have to get ugly.

Everything said this time of the year is essentially the opposite of the truth.

As of now, it is said that Marner is focused on honoring the final year of his deal and hasn’t submitted any list of preferred trade destinations to Maple Leafs’ management.
translate: Mitch knows he's being shopped after July 1.

Mitch can be a loser and tank his value. Good luck Mitch.
However, Treliving stated he wouldn't trade the winger simply for the sake of doing so.
I believe they want to move on and will take non-ideal offers. Not Kadri bad, but at a loss.

In his latest for The Athletic, LeBrun revealed that even though the Leafs have not attempted to engage in extension talks, Marner's camp, led by the notorious Darren Ferris, does not plan on engaging in them any time soon either, which will complicate matters for the Leafs this off-season.
Sides are talking. But they don't want the media hounding them, so they pretend they aren't talking.

However, that possibility has shrunk over the past month as the difficulty of moving Marner's contract becomes the key factor.
Tre picked Nylander. They will trade him at a loss. Mitch knows he's not wanted.

He decides, not us
He can do whatever he wants

Yes, but if he wants that 8th year, he has no choice except to work with the Leafs because he sure ain't getting paid $12 million in the 8th year when he's 35 years old if he signs a 7 year contract elsewhere.

But he might get 6M in that last year, and an extra 1M each of the first seven as a ufa.

People make too much of the 7 vs 8 years. Maybe he ends up signing for four years in FA.

He could sign a short contract like our hero Auston

Where was the GM on record as saying “no appetite”? I missed that one

Mitch Marner’s future has been the most-talked-about subject in the Toronto market. He’s got a year left on his deal and a full no-move clause. Treliving and Marner’s agent, Darren Ferris, as one would expect, met Tuesday. “The thing I would say is, be very, very careful of what you read out there,” Treliving said when asked about Marner speculation. “Mitch is a hell of a player. He’s going into the last year of his contract. We’re not going to comment on any players. Any business that we conduct, we’ll do that between Darren Ferris and us. We’re not going to do play-by-play on it. We’ve got to look at every possible way for our team to be better.

“Mitch controls a lot of this whole thing (with the no-trade). If there’s a way to make our team better, we’re going to do it. But we’re certainly not going to make a trade just so we can pound our chest and say, ‘Look, we’re different.'”

But as Treliving reiterated, they will explore any meaningful way to make the team better. That’s his job as GM.

Reading between the lines, all options on Marner remain on the table:

1. He stays in Toronto and plays out his contract next season.
2. The Leafs look to extend him eventually.
3. Toronto gets a trade offer it feels makes too much sense and brings it to Marner’s camp (and no team would trade for Marner without an extension in place).

“We’re not scared to be bold and do things,” Treliving said. “But there’s got to be things to do out there".

“So we’ll see. But for me, we’ve got a really good player in Mitch Marner. That’s a good thing. We’ll just keep plugging away on it.”

I think he would be shooting himself in the foot if he signs a short term deal like Matthews...he would be 32 when the contract is up if he signs a 4 year deal...he'll be lucky to even get $8 million per when he's 32.

But he might get 6M in that last year, and an extra 1M each of the first seven as a ufa.

People make too much of the 7 vs 8 years. Maybe he ends up signing for four years in FA.

He might as well throw money away if he signs a 4 year deal because he'll be 32 when that ends...how much do you think a team will throw at Marner when he's 32 years old? He would be lucky to even get $8 million per...it won't be anywhere close to $12 million per.

Yes that’s all old stuff, you didn’t highlight Marners quote. Apparently there is a quote from Marner himself. I’m curious what he said.
Remember the old days when links needed to be provided to back up these statements?

There is not much difference between seven or eight year contracts, over eight years, when you factor in a contract for that eighth year and the surplus you would receive on the first seven years in free agency. You're talking +/- a couple percentage points.

Probably pretty low on the priority list all things considered, particularly in this situation.
