Marner was quoted today that he will not be waiving his NMC and plans to play out the final year of the contract. This is Tre's fault. He had a chance to move this little greedy puke last season. Now we lose him for nothing.

Makes no sense to give up that 8th year so we need to wait another 4 weeks to see if he means it. Shit the bed next April and he can kiss lots of money good bye.

Yeah just like we probably saw Nylander's best half season of his career.

Exactly. But if Marner's camp doesn't want to negotiate during the season then we'll get a full season.

Scenario arises in which Jake Guentzel signs in Toronto following monster trade!

Do you believe Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving can pull this off?

Now becoming one of the most coveted forwards on the free agent market comes July 1st, Guentzel will garner the interest of pretty much every team out there, and that includes the Toronto Maple Leafs. Guentzel, who is looking for a shot at winning year-in, year-out, is likely to command quite a significant salary, and mathematically speaking, Toronto would be ruled out.

Unless they make room for Guentzel by trading Mitch Marner. Yes, here goes the trade rumours surrounding number 16 again.

Guentzel, who was traded from the Penguins to the Carolina ahead of the March deadline, could be on his way up to Canada, but only IF the Maple Leafs make the bold move of shipping out Marner, after he agrees to waive his clause to whatever team Toronto strikes a deal with, and get the room for the coveted pending free agent.

But what if the Maple Leafs find out that, by parting ways with Marner, they could sign Guentzel in Toronto? It has been projected that Guentzel could get a massive six year deal at $8 million annually as a free agent.

His agent Darren Ferris can't be that dumb.
Why not? Don't players wait out their contracts to see what they can get as a ufa? He's a selke nominated, close to 100 point player. He's gotta step up in the playoffs though, I do agree there but he's gonna get paid regardless thanks to our previous regime.

The team is moving on.
Playing for a team that isn't interested in you is a bad plan.

Playing for Toronto when the team doesnt want you .... REALLY STUPID.

He's got a VERY serious chance of tanking his long term value.

Earlier on Wednesday, The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun reported that the Marner camp wants to let next season unfold and see what happens instead of entertaining all the rumours on a possible move this summer.

As of now, it is said that Marner is focused on honoring the final year of his deal and hasn’t submitted any list of preferred trade destinations to Maple Leafs’ management.

LeBrun also indicated there seems to be little appetite on Toronto's part to discuss a contract extension this summer. There could be talks later on depending on how the season goes. David Alter also cited LeBrun reporting Leafs GM Brad Treliving acknowledged Marner holds all the cards in this situation. However, Treliving stated he wouldn't trade the winger simply for the sake of doing so.

In his latest for The Athletic, LeBrun revealed that even though the Leafs have not attempted to engage in extension talks, Marner's camp, led by the notorious Darren Ferris, does not plan on engaging in them any time soon either, which will complicate matters for the Leafs this off-season.

A lot can happen during this summer. The Leafs could receive a trade offer that's too good to pass up from a club that Marner would consider a suitable trade destination.

However, that possibility has shrunk over the past month as the difficulty of moving Marner's contract becomes the key factor.

Marners camp anchoring first through public channels ain't a good sign. I suspect to facilitate a trade now includes communicating that Marner is not part of the long term program...or next years program.

That would be pretty bold, and Marners camp probably betting they won't go down that road. Ferris is aggressive and life is going to get complicated for Tre if he decides to battle.

Marner loses.

He's not the sharpest tool. He isn't the type of player to perform well under pressure.
Face facts Mitch.

It's all just a bad bluff, Marner doesn't have the stones to see this through. He has a lot more to lose here in the long run than the Leafs do.

Quite frankly I'd rather invest in a #1D and #1A/B Goalie instead of another forward. Lets see how youngsters do next season (Knies, Cowan, Minten, McMann, Holmberg) and if really need to add a forward then we can add him when JT is off the cap or at the TDL (if we think team has gelled really well and could have a shot at cup). First things first. Marner the F-OFF the team and then get a D-man and Goalie

I'm saying we need offense. Guentzel 38 playoff goals in 69 games, 45 goal pace.
You aren't wrong.

I can't ever see this group scoring much in the playoffs.

Matthews' game doesnt translate to the playoffs either.

Sad team really.

The worst part about Mitch playing next season is it tanks another season of Matthews and Nylander. We won't be able to upgrade the team for next season. And if we think Mitch is weak now, wait until he's lame duck and getting booed by the fans. So I hope he changes his mind, but if he doesn't it's out of the team's control. Thanks Dubas.

Of course he does but players gamble on themselves all the time. He also has a very good chance to get nominated for another selke and break 100 points in the regular season. If he does this, he's getting paid regardless of the playoffs imo.

I think he gets paid either way and even though I like the player, if it's 12-13 million I'd prefer it not be here. Team has to be first!

It will suck if he gets to walk for nothing but I just don't see him waiving. I can absolutely see him gambling on himself. These nmc they hand out now to everybody along with the salary cap is ruining the game.

Saw this on twitter. One way or another this deadweight will not be a leaf if not right away at least end of next season
