I think Marner will get better in the playoffs, but I fear it might be elsewhere. He’ll really have to tune everything out in order to survive next season.

The whole thing still baffles me. I get the whole ‘playoffs are different’ thing, but a player shouldn’t go from top 5 scorer to almost completely ineffective.

Kessel’s success in the playoffs was also mentioned in another thread, it goes to show you don’t have to be willing to have all your teeth knocked out to succeed.

I’d like to see him back with Tavares next year, that’s one of the things I think Babcock was right about.

Ryan Tannehill just restructured his contract to free up $15m for the Titans to bring in Julio Jones.

It’s time for Marner to do the Same. After July 28 and he gets his bonus, he should restructure down to a much lower AAV.

Prove to everyone he really cares about winning.

Yeah. I will defend a player who many people misdiagnose as a shit player. In the leafs over 100 year history, he is the top 25th in all timecareer leaf scoring at only 24 years old. It is an absurd hot take. You take Marner out and the team still loses. If you think differently, you should be vigorously be defending Keefe and Dubas. I dont. These guys played the style they were told to play. That isnt a small thing. Argue away that they dont have the skill to play the required style but who exactly is being unreasonable here? In fact move Marner and get another 6 mil Nylander.
You could build a 3rd line of Kadri-Brown money with it.

Actually the public statement from both Keefe and Dubas was that Marner is not on the block (though I think that isnt necessarily true given the right offer). Nylander on the other hand is an easier player to move and there were no such assurances that he wouldn't at the end of this playoff run.
They wont trade any if these players for a bag of pucks but it doesnt take a genius to understand there are more teams that could trade for Nylander than Marner without gutting a team.

The Babs stuff, did Babs done that to other rookies or just him? Bc there were quite a few that year, AM, Willie, Hyman, Brown, Leivo, and Goat.
The demanding a trade thing came out in the beginning of this year playoffs, if I remember correctly, which is strange timing and the source was none other than Dougie, which is even more strange. Having experienced the Highs and Lows of being a Leafs, Dougie would surely know the possible reaction from Leafsnation.
Don't really want to get into the other stuff as been posted here way too often.

Personally, I think less is more for Marner. Keefe should take him off the PK and let him conserve more energy for the PP and 5 V 5.

On top of that, Leafs just need to spend money on shooting coach like how they spend on skating coach. Marner, Hyman, Kerfoot, Engvall, Soup, and to some extend Gally, all can skate but how can they not have a decent shot.

I have zero problem letting Marner play on PP2. Just to remind you, the last time he did that, it became PP1 because it out produced the other unit. It was a bit of a joke when people here were clamoring about putting Matthew's and Nylander on the 1st PP unit.

None of them are on the block, none of them will be moved, the same/same will be done by Dubas but Nylander IMO should not be if indeed there was a block.

There should be, Marner should be moved IMO for various reasons.

Elliotte Friedman made a good point on 31 Thoughts last week that Mitch Marner has always had "noise" around him and the best way the Leafs can get something out of him is to quiet that noise and have him focus on playing the game. Other than that, he seems to be in a Kessel/Phaneuf style end of Leaf career turmoil (after Salute Gate).

For a good hometown kid, he seems to have an entourage level of drama round him that you don't really see with any typical Leaf. The Babcock coaching drama, rumours of demanding a trade after being demoted to the fourth line, threatening to shop his services for an offer sheet, the constant comparisons to Auston Matthews, the letter to fans where he referenced names like Clark, Keon and the greats, the playoff meltdowns, admitting he wasn't ready for certain big games, the PP rumours/smear campaign, etc. just a lot of bad buzz.

It just shows his immaturity and that he's pretty much tone deaf

Great. If only they had JVR-Bozak-Kadri. Marner was an element of that, no question, but he had a good mix of skill sets around him.

The issue is not that Marner puts up regular season stats, he does. It is that he is paid in the top 5 in the league and is an abject disaster at playoff time. Unfortunately hockey changes come playoffs, I actually dislike the 2 different officiating philosophies makes no sense. In football a hold in regular season is a hold in the playoffs which is the way it should be BUT that is hockey. Mitch sucks (look at his resume) in playoff hockey ergo he is stealing money ergo he is an anchor due to the amount of cap he eats. The Leafs will never win in the playoffs with this core, and he is the best person to jettison for better assets.

Matthews was also an absolute disaster but I see it is all Marners fault around here.

I think Babcock was correct in thinking Marner should drive his own line and the reasoning is simple.

Marner had elite production with every center he's played with...Tavares and Bozak. He proved long ago he'll produce without Matthews.

We badly needed to shake things up against the Habs and we should have split Matty/Marner up and made the Habs make an adjustment and to get Mitch away from the heavier checking.

I'm not saying Marner/Matty should never play together but it shouldn't be set in stone and we have to be ready to adjust our lineup in different situations.
