Pretty crazy that Marner makes $4 million more than Nylander. We could get a pretty good player for that amount. If it comes down to only keeping one of them, right now Willie has the edge in almost every facet.

With $4M in cap space we actually could have signed Petro over Brodie (not that Brodie was bad in any way, just that we could have signed a 1D stud

We also could have added someone like Toffoli instead of Thornton with that cap space.

Leaf fans will be happy to be back in the building. All will be forgiven.
They will be gluttons for some regular season points and dangles (our guys are better than your guys and Dubas brought in player x , what a genius) until they get kicked right in the daddy bags again.

Whats the over/under marner gets the larry murphy treatment on opening night?

I used to be a huge marner fan but his post game and in game series performance really ticked me off
I am also quite worried about this. Not that I want Marner to stay or feel he deserves better. I just fear that if things reach that point, we will be paying someone to take him rather than trade him for assets now.
He will be leaving the leafs soon. Either our fanboy gm trades him this offseason or the fans chase him out of town.
I prefer we trade him to Siberia and get a few assets in the process.

Gardiner got the same treatment and there were no trading partners for him and he walked as a UFA.

Actually now that I think of it I can't remember the last time we traded a pending UFA if the didn't want to re-sign with us.

Or you know, they'll go to watch a hockey game in their spare time and not read too much into it...

It’ll be forgotten by then and fans will just be happy to be in the building.
I don’t think so this time. Leafs fans have not been this angry at management and a single player in a very very long time. I absolutely think he will be booed and his time as a leaf is over. His only way to redeem himself is in the playoffs….. there is no way he survives the scrutiny in this city between now and then.

Marner pissed me off to but I don't think the fan base attacking him like that is going to make anything better

Paying fans can boo if they want but if things are going to be that toxic it's going to be a problem

Elliotte Friedman made a good point on 31 Thoughts last week that Mitch Marner has always had "noise" around him and the best way the Leafs can get something out of him is to quiet that noise and have him focus on playing the game. Other than that, he seems to be in a Kessel/Phaneuf style end of Leaf career turmoil (after Salute Gate).

For a good hometown kid, he seems to have an entourage level of drama round him that you don't really see with any typical Leaf. The Babcock coaching drama, rumours of demanding a trade after being demoted to the fourth line, threatening to shop his services for an offer sheet, the constant comparisons to Auston Matthews, the letter to fans where he referenced names like Clark, Keon and the greats, the playoff meltdowns, admitting he wasn't ready for certain big games, the PP rumours/smear campaign, etc. just a lot of bad buzz.

LMAO. This coming from a former NHL player that who branded himself as "Legendary". I agree that Marner is a pushover and has no heart in the playoffs. The team didn't show up and embarrassed the franchise by choking. But I wouldn't put too much stock into what Sean Avery says. He is just seeking attention to remain relavent.

Which leads to the age old question, where there is smoke, there got to be fire.

The Babs stuff, did Babs done that to other rookies or just him? Bc there were quite a few that year, AM, Willie, Hyman, Brown, Leivo, and Goat.
The demanding a trade thing came out in the beginning of this year playoffs, if I remember correctly, which is strange timing and the source was none other than Dougie, which is even more strange. Having experienced the Highs and Lows of being a Leafs, Dougie would surely know the possible reaction from Leafsnation.
Don't really want to get into the other stuff as been posted here way too often.

Personally, I think less is more for Marner. Keefe should take him off the PK and let him conserve more energy for the PP and 5 V 5.

On top of that, Leafs just need to spend money on shooting coach like how they spend on skating coach. Marner, Hyman, Kerfoot, Engvall, Soup, and to some extend Gally, all can skate but how can they not have a decent shot.

His noise is possibly his father but he deserves every bit of criticism launched his way. You demand the moon and don't perform in Toronto be prepared to hear about it.
He could have so easily been a hero here

So you are saying that the sole reason the Leafs lost was because of 1 player with the second highest shots 5x5 on the team, the second highest xga and one of the top players in hits taken.
Seems like a pretty lazy assessment, thanks.

I find it incredibly ironic that your avatar is Wendall Clark and you defend Marner. They could not be more diametrically opposed Vis a Vis their playing styles. When Marner essentially defended his playoff performance as acceptable that was all I needed to hear he is and has always been from pee wee on a spoiled caudled p***y. Move his ass as soon as it makes sense

There's a new thing that shitty GM's invented to cover their asses called "Own Rental"...its kind of cool if you like losing assets for nothing..

Who is the last UFA that was actually good enough to sign? And did the team that signed them get a deal? Bozak maybe? though his deal wasn't great St. Loius did win cup. Can't really say there is any real big regrets there.

But Dubas loves the noise around Marner...the kid does great community work...it's almost like hockey is less of a priority, and that's a good thing...:sarcasm:

A friend of mine knows someone with pretty close ties to the family and I will just say that almost all of it is coming from Paul. He is a real piece of work.

I don't think Marner will reach the Larry Murphy stage while playing in front of fans but I am sure if he just struggles one little bit in the regular season, the social media will be even worse than now.

Lol.
I also like hearing the poorly performing gm’s and executives talk about “process”.
Shanahan has been saying it for 7 years now…. And he is the only one that knows what this process is.

Thats common in any place, in any sports and actually in any professional fields. IF they demand to be paid like the best, they just need to bring it.
Just like if my company headhunt someone to join the firm and that person couldn't generate the expected revenue in reasonable time period, there is a very good that person will be fired
