Yah it seems like Brady is refusing to sign long term. Boooo
I’m not surprised. They will be in stlouis blues uniforms when they both hit ufa. That tkachuk family is loyal to stlouis. And they are tight knit. There’s no way they are wasting there careers in Calgary and Ottawa as 2 American kids from stlouis. There going home.

I get that some want to dump the guy but that’s terrible value
The value would be in the cap space and hopefully get a player that would compete in the playoffs but other then that is not a great trade

Cap space only has value if you know what to do with it. A player like Marner won’t be a cap dump

So like a snowball's chance in hell? Gotta agree. Look, at the end of the day, we're Leafs fans. I'd love for Marner to someday grow up and admit that he has alot of improving to do. But, his attitude in the past few weeks has only shown an arrogance borne out of an entitled upbringing from Papa Paul. Doesn't look good for anyone eating crow on this one.

QFT.

This fanbase should be long past the point of giving a crap about any regular season accolades.

Give me a team like the Islanders any day of the week where there's no individual awards and their top scorer doesn't even crack 70 points.
It isn't about regular season accolades. It's about showing he does put up points that do come close to his salary. I've said many times, he's overpaid, but not by a ton. And I'd rather not be the Islanders, especially if they don't win the cup this year, they got some issues themselves.

It was not a normal season and regular season does not equal playoffs. Two true 11m players should be able to carry the team to one win after going up 3-1 against what many called a weak team. That team got stronger and the leafs wilted. 11m players do not allow that to happen two years in a row.
Marner still put up 94 points a couple seasons ago. He can only put up points in the amount of games he's allowed to play

I don’t think anyone cares what Marner does in the regular season. Playoffs matter.

Nobody cares about taxes either. The Leafs largely mitigate that with huge signing bonuses.

Most would agree that center is a more valuable position, which makes the salary difference worse.
A team can't make the playoffs if the team has a bad season though. Taxes do matter though, especially in terms of caphit.

The tax issue is at least partly mitigated by structuring contracts around bonuses. Money up front matters.

Also, I believe certain types of bonuses are escrow exempt. Assuming Toronto structures their contracts with those bonuses, the player would come away with more money despite paying higher taxes.

Usually in the 3rd period during these playoff game I see him come on during commercials selling Life insurance and other things.

I think Marner does help sell Life insurance.

He's a good example that anyone could choke and die at the most in opportune time.

He also represents life insurance contracts are like his contract. Overpriced and largely useless.

Ben Simmons with skates

He went big stretches being bad his entire career. People just don't remember it.

A streaky winger regular season darling that can't score. 8 AAV x 8 tops. I saw his contract as an anchor a mile away. I would never have let him sign that as his father or GM. I would have traded him.

AP would have looked great in a Leaf uni.

Not sure if anyone of that ilk, or a Shea Weber even is available via trade but that's what I am hoping they do with Mitch. He is just not good enough that you can't consider trading him, and that includes his ceiling 'one day' especially if the return is a LEGIT #1 defenseman which the Leafs have never had in my 40 years supporting them.

Why is everyone talking about #1D in a series where our goalie had a 930+ SV% and a sub 2.00 GAA?

Rielly, Brodie, Muzzin might not be up for a Norris but that is a strong core, and having Holl / Bogo / Dermott / Sandin is nice depth

Our star forwards didn't score, that was the only difference here

I could not disagree with you more. One of the most apologetic takes I have read in a long time. Disagree on every point you made.

The benefit of having an elite defenseman like AP is it makes the plumbing work better and more effortlessly from defense to puck retrieval to transition to offense. You want that puck in transport in elite hands moving through the neutral zone and that field general on the blueline.

Free Marner from Matthews all he does now is look to get the puck to the SISCO Kid instead of performing his own Magic if Matthews is true super star he doesnt need Marner to be his wingman free Mitch PP will be better also

Fundamentally I agree with you that the GM would need to know what to do with cap space……clearly ours does not.
In a perfect world you don’t cap dump Marner but keeping him when he adds nothing in the playoffs.
Him and Dubas have put the team in a rough position……dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t

You know something that always stuck out to me??? How we 'lucked' into Marner.

At the draft I always found it strange that Phoenix didn't draft him and took Strome. I know all the reasons, centre, bigger player, could score goals etc. Strome was highly touted.

But it was clear as day Mitch Marner was the better more talented player with a much higher ceiling and they STILL took Strome. I'm not defending Phoenix their loss is our gain, but, Phoenix seen something they didn't like and passed. I think we are seeing now the flaws in this game and in his will to win.
