Marner's production in playoffs in earlier part of his career can be attributed to the following:

  • Matthews line getting the most attention defensively
  • Leafs having better depth so opposition had to spread out their defensive strategies
  • Hyman was on his line
  • Bergeron line is not really known for it's "defense"; they trade chances but more often than not convert more than their counterpart

When you make 11 million you kill the depth in the cap world; you have to score more than you did previously because there is no depth supporting you; AND you will face tougher competition defensively because opposition can now zero in on you. Montreal basically just SHUT matthews-marner with strong defensively play.

Marner is not cut out to be a 11 million winger who can produce and play offensively well navigating tight checking systems. He doesn't have the body, IQ, or the will to do it.

When 5'9 Gallaghar out competes you with an injured hand; it just tells you the kind of SUCK marner and his 11 AAV cap hit is to the detriment of this team in the cap world

This is not accurate at all.

For one, marner has one of the highest IQs in the league.

Secondly, marner had 9 points in 7 PO games playing with bozak and jvr. His line was the first line and received the most attention. Matthews had 2 points.

Marner has a history of winning and showing up when the game counts.

The same can not be said for 34.

But of course leafs fans need a new whipping boy and it can't be auston.

For someone who has high IQ, he sure hesitates alot in the playoffs...I don't see the kind of hesitation in Kucherov's game.

I'm watching a lot of Patrick Kane highlights...they gotta show some film to Marner this off-season.

Have him work on his shot, get him around left face off circle and work on his speed.

Kane is so cut throat. So many plays I watch where Kane just finishes that I think Marner would deke, pass or take it behind the net whereas Kane just goes in for the kill.
You’re right but Marner said at the season end presser he wouldn’t change a thing in how he prepares for next season. Quality $11million character we have on our team.

Edit: The line this year was Marleau-Kadri-Marner

The year Marner had 9pts in 7 games he played with Hyman & Tavares vs Bergeron

Chara played against Matthews

Cassidy knows how to match lines, Keefe does not

Naw this was 17-18. Tavares came the next season.

Marner was with jvr and bozak and got 9 points in 7 games. Check nhl.com

He seemed to have a pretty good season. What should he do different in his preparation?

I feel like that has to do with confidence. He showed in 2018 PO vs boston that he can be a big game player vs a heavy team.

hope Dubas is not he has messed this organization up so much, want the keys taken away and given to someone who can turn this team around.... guy is a failure...
That’s the thing. Do we really want the guy who thinks he’s worth 11m, valuing him as a trade chip?

How about working on his shot, or his core strength and skating, or his mental preparation for games. How about watching some Kane videos, someone many have mentioned as a comparable. Need more? The point is, no player who earns 11 million and failed miserably in his past few playoffs should ever say he won't change a thing in his preparation for the next season. Great players never stop learning and changing their preparation to augment their game. But we have to remember, we're dealing with an immature, petulent, selfish individual.

Something has gotten to his head...he hasn't been the same player in the playoffs since getting paid...if you're going to bend over your team for $11 million per, you gotta show up in the playoffs.

It's probably a lot to deal with as a young man.

He has handlers, agents, and family basically directing his hockey career for him.

That isn't a secret.

Probably had little say of his own in what happened in negotiations (overriding the aforementioned parties) but he's the one that has to eventually face the heat from the press, the fans on the street, social media, etc. for what goes on the ice and the extremely high expectations that come with commanding a contract comparable with the best player's in the league..

That's probably a bit of a mind f*** but I'm not sure how sympathetic I am to that.

Lou would have definitely helped him with that 2nd contract even if he didn't know it, simply by keeping the dogs at bay.

Could we get proper value for him, especially if we're actively shopping him? Not so sure.
What is the proper value for Marner or any top players for that matter?
If it is someone with same level skill and age wise, I don’t think any teams will trade for him due to his contract bc all other players make significant less than Marner.
Is Patty Kane for Marner not proper value?
Even if trading Marner looks like Dubas got fleeced but if Leafs end up winning the Cup, who cares?

I believe it was Kadri and Marleau. JVR-Bozak-Brown was the 3rd line. Plekanec ended up taking Kadri's spot when he got suspended.

I hated Babcock as a coach and didn’t approve of his methods but he must have seen in Marner what we’re seeing now i.e. a work ethic that is sadly lacking and a lack of desire to improve. Babcock just went about it the wrong way. Alas, many years later little has changed with Marner which speaks volumes about his character.

A work ethic that is lacking?
Played the most minutes as a forward on the team.
Do you just write fantasy to pretend you have something to say?
Tell us all...did all his passes, shots, takeaways, entries etc. all get done sitting on the couch?
This is really doubling down on dumb.

Kane hasnt done much since he signed his contract. In fact, Marner has far surpassed Kanes first 2 rfa years performance.

I’m certain he already works on all of those things as well as some new things. He does need to work on his interview skills, some take what he says far too literal.
I understand that people think they know the players based on their media presence but your last sentence is garbage.

Ditto for matthews. Except his contract is even worse.

Marner has a history of coming up big in games? Certainly the f*** not in the nhl. I couldn't give a shit about the juniors.
