Unless you are moving him to cap dweller, the cap hit is entirely the point... simply put Marner is a good player but NO WHERE NEAR an $11m cap hit... Honestly, who is going to make that move? Who has the cap? And combine it with the assets needed to make the transaction?

There are small market teams like Columbus that are desperate for playoff revenue...they are going to lose Jones because he's not signing there...they would be glad to have a Marner on their team to help them make the playoffs, and they won't have 4 forwards taking 50% of the cap.

Marner and Dermott for Laine and Jones might actually happen.
Marner real salary is very low and Dermott is RFA.
While BJs will most likely lose both Laine and Jones due to Free agency.

TBH, if we don't get close to a Cup in the next 2 years, I'd trade Matthews - there is a better than 50% chance he leaves after this deal and goes home so we might as well get something.
Yes and sign McDavid in a few years.

He's easily top5 best Maple Leaf of all time, are you delusional?

Guys plays better defense then Nylander could ever dream of playing....hence why Marner plays PK and Willie doesnt!

Do you watch the games or process everything and allow the media to do it for you?

Marner has the most offensive/defensive plays on our team the past few years....not one guy on our team has his skill set.
If this is how father acts on hockey forum no wonder son is so coddled and unable to handle any adversity

I really don't want Laine near this team. As others have said, he'd be poison in Toronto.

I think Seattle could be a great trade partner. They could handle his contract and hed be instant star power for them. Could probably get a 1st back. Straight up.
Then 11M freed up instantly. Done and done.
I would be shocked if Seattle makes that move... they are going to get some very good players in the expansion draft,,, the model was set by Vegas, weaponize cap space, not overpay 5 million/yr for a player.. As I said before, Marner is a good hockey player, a setup man (not goal scorer) that is being paid like McDavid, and Matthews. Marner is not a generational player... not even close... he is a very good player in the league but there are levels... and you don't win in the NHL by taking on bad contracts... and a bad contract is one with term that is overpaying for production.

Yup. That pissed a lot of people off and he set himself up to fail. You do that and you don't deliver when it counts and people are going to come after you.

Having said that, I'd want every dollar, too, and the Leafs were stupid enough to give it to him.

I agree Dubas was dumb to give him that, should have bridged him, but I remember Marner wanted $9 million per for a bridge deal...my goodness, greedy much? But that's where I don't agree with Marner taking every dollar he could get...$10 million over 7 years wouldn't kill him, would it? That's still alot of money, but it's not almost $11 million over 6 years. He was negotiating to get every cent from the Leafs...his deal is not a fair market value deal, let alone a discount, but it's a hefty premium...just look at his signing bonuses for the first few years of the contract. There's plenty of goodwill and endorsements he gets for playing for the Toronto Maples Leafs, and it's a shame that those things are not enough that he has to squeeze the organization for every penny too.

I guess I'm a masochist. I went back and watched some highlights.

Habs played it like the PK. They took away all the passing options and let Marner do his thing. He has no shot so it's basically Marner versus getting the shot through versus Carey Price. Hence why Matthews was a no show in the goals department as well. Odds of Marner setting him up is lower than the odds of us scoring a power play goal in the regular season.

They need to be split up. Habs are a very inferior team. If they can do this, every team we face in the playoffs will. They will look back at this series and do the same thing. NHL is all science now.

I'm at a loss what to do with Marner. If he doesn't add new tricks to his toolset, he will become a playoff PK specialist and that's about it. Has almost zero powerplay relevance right now.

I think that's why he works better with JT. The play style is different. Jt's a high IQ puck tracker.

I agree. If Vegas is their guide, and why wouldn't they be, they won't want Marner.

You may have a point here.. Look, this is not to beat up on Marner, if you remove the contract from the discussion, any GM in the league would love to have him... but the reality is that Cap Management is a critical aspect of building a team.,, if the team has cap space to spare, than it could be workable..

The kid has an ego. A BIG ego.

The kind of ego that thinks he can split the D-Man when he should just dump the puck, and Montreal scores as a result.

If I was coaching against Toronto, I would cut the passing lanes to Matthews off and say to Marner, "Shoot. I dare you."

That's what Montreal did and it worked.
