If I was coaching against Toronto, I would cut the passing lanes to Matthews off and say to Marner, "Shoot. I dare you."

That's what Montreal did and it worked.

It's sad that old man Spezza still has a better shot than Marner's muffin shot.

Just trade Marner for some mid range guys who work their ass off. We'll be better off on the ice and under the Cap.

I don't know why Marner's shot can't be improved.

Maybe it's true. Maybe you can't teach someone how to score.
Marner is like Shaq. Shaq and the staff kept saying he is practising freethrows….but somehow he got worst in his career. Marner needs to work on his shots in real life instead of NHL series in EAsports.

I don't know anything about the NBA so I'll take your word for it. :)

Scoring in the NHL is really hard, it's based on shot, instincts and anticipating where the puck is and making yourself available...it's not something you could think too much about, especially in the playoffs because there's just not enough time. Sure Marner could work on his shot, and he has worked on it, but having a world class shot is also a talent, and not something that could be acquired through repetition, otherwise everyone could shoot the puck like Ovechkin.

Well said and I agree.

Funny thing is, Marner's goal total has increased every year.

Shaq was top 5 greatest player at his position ever and only made 1 three pointer all career.

ofc Marner is not and will never be as good nor as bad as shooting but it’s an interesting analogy

Shaq was a dominant force, heck he literally broke the backboards and shattered rims.
But he was a very bad free throw shooter and when late in game-opposing teams will use a heck a Shaq strategy to intentionally foul him and make him shoot free throws. For his whole career he kept saying he worked on his free throws but the result was pretty much the same and actually got worse.
While Marner never openly said he worked on his shots but I don’t think it is a secret that the whole
League knows his shot is crap. Heck a Shaq becomes let’s Marner Shoot, lol.

He plays with Matthews and he's on the PP with Tavares and Matthews. Based on that alone, he's gonna fall into a goal every 3 or 4 games.

I'd also think he gets more than his share of empty net goals - altho, I don't know that for a fact.

But, again, if I was coaching against Toronto, I'd want him to shoot - it sure beats a one timer from Matthews.

Not another coach, please. Eventually, you have to hold the players accountable.

I’m with you on this. If you are not going to fire Dubas then keep Keefe and move Marner and change up this core. It needs a shake up. It feels like the players have been running the team and Dubas needs to show them that’s not how it works.

Can Dubas do that though?
Watched Moneyball and Last Dance. Both Billy Beane and Jerry Krause were tough as nail in business and Beane even tried to distance himself from the players.
I really don’t see Dubas ever becoming that type of GM.

We will find out this off season if he breaks up the core. If he doesn’t than we know our answer.

But Leafs will still have 4 players occupying half the Cap.

That's true but that particular swap makes sense financially for Buffalo with not as much real money owed to Marner, makes sense cap wise as a fairly even swap, and also from the standpoint of two highly talented young forwards getting needed changes of scenery.

I'd definitely be open to other Marner trade routes though, just not sure what's out there that makes as much sense/gets as close to equal of a talent return without adding other assets to the deal.

Hypothetically if the leafs did trade Marner for Eichel I’m guessing they move Tavares to the wing?

My concern is they are still top heavy with the salary cap on forwards. We might still need to fill the rest of the roster out with minimum league contracts.

Marner and Dermott for Jones and Laine.
Columbus don’t want to spend to the cap and Marner real salary is very low by cap value is high.
Both Jones and Laine won’t resign with Columbus and I doubt their return could have anyone better than Marner.

Even i could make a greasy goal in NHL (ok i would die in the process, but the goal would be made). You dont need to be a great sniper to score.
