Hey we paid 11 million for assists.
If you want goals that’s extra.

This post triggered my curiosity and since we know Marner hasn't scored a playoff goal in 18 games dating back to game #1 of the Boston series in 2018-19, thought I'd look up how many assists Marner delivered in the playoffs the last 3 season in games that the Leafs lost.

In the 4 losses against Bos in 2018-19 - Marner contributed 0-1-1 points in the series and was a -6.
In the 3 losses against CBJ in 2019-20 - Marner contributed 0-0-0 points in the series and was a -3.
In the 4 losses against Mon in 2020-21 - Marner contributed 0-1-1 points in the series was a -1.

So in those 11 losses over 3 playoff season Marner produced 2 assists total (1 on the PP) for 0-2-2 points and -10.

Can't say we're getting very much for that $11 mil even in terms of assists, at least not when it counts to help preventing losing games and then series.

It's kind of ironic. For many year Leafs Nation has had this fantasy of The Hometown Kid, this likeable superstar offensive player who would be the franchise foundation like Steve Yzerman for the Red Wings, etc. and lead us back to glory.

A generation ago, it was Eric Lindros, refusing to report to Quebec, and almost made it back to Toronto in a number of scenarios before getting back a little too late. A decade ago, Burke tried so hard to get the John Tavares pick in 2009. Burke screwed up the chance to grab Tyler Seguin in 2010. Everyone fantasized about Steven Stamkos coming home.

The along comes Mitch Marner ready to inherit the mantle of the homegrown franchise player... and Auston Matthews comes along and steals his thunder.

we were just one number off from landing McDavid. I was so pissed at that draft

Goals become a premium in the playoffs.
You know that.
So if the franchise guy you are paying 11+ million to score goals is constantly covered, and the franchise guy you are paying 11 million to pass the puck can’t score them, that’s a lot of cap not scoring. Which leaves little talent down the line to pick up the slack.

How about 2/3 players for a total of 11 million?
Another Nylander at 6 mil and an entire 3rd line of Kadri/Brown level players?

Curious to see if Dreger gets a commission from the agencies. The advocacy he was doing for Hyman was the same playbook.

Moderately valuable Leaf plus free agency and a little fear mongering equals healthy salary bump.

I would like to see if Dubas is getting a cut in an offshore account somewhere from these ridiculous deals he gave out. I wouldn't be surprised if true

He’s a loser when it matters. Always will be.
Only problem is they found this our after he got paid

I agree... but if there was a player who earned the right to act entitled... it was Lindros. He was just an incredible prospect with all around potential. Being a center, absolutely huge and a very good center...with incredible stats.

Marner didn't have a fraction of hype Lindros had.

But Marner really thinks he is in the Matthews McDavid, Eichel group (or else he is being coached by his dad to believe it) when he's barely clinging onto the next tier which includes Aho, Rantanen group. Even when he fails for the second straight post season... he refuses to acknowledge his personal shortcomings and falls just short of blaming his lack of production on paranormal activity "we make plays..but the puck just don't go in". When asked about pressures to produce after losing in game 7.. he instantly starts with "i think me and Auston" .... like he wanted to point out that both him and Matthews failed... and not just him.

.. can't believe Paul Marner called up Doug Gilmour over the Babcock lazy list fiasco. Haha ok I get it was a crap move by Babs... but calling up a leaf legend for advice when your son is in his first season?
Yep all started with marner thinking he was as good as Matthews. Like how selfish and delusional does someone have to be to think that

This team has to do everything in its power to get rid of this clown

This is more about Kane than Toews.

Kane looks, sees it is Pronger...and still decides to get to the puck first rather than bailing.

I haven't seen Marner display this...courage a lot.

A lot? Can you point out even one time ever?

The hilarious part is someone on this site got mad at me because I didn’t agree with his narrative that Marner and Matthews “dominate” the competition in the Montreal series.
This simple post shows why I got so mad about Marners presser when he said he wasn’t going to do anything different to prepare for next year.
Totally delusions and arrogant

I would try to get EP from Van for 8,5 or so. Not a better player but better mindset. Realy hates to loose(So always angry right now). Him with Matthews and Nylander would be crazy. Tavares your on your own, works best for u.

Marner for Eichel.

I don't see how Buffalo will get a better package in return elsewhere, especially given Eichel's injury risk.

Marner has so little production in the playoffs you could probably even roll the tape on those few assists to describe exactly what he even did on them.

In case you haven't seen this gem...the $11 million flyby...just pretend to be getting the puck so you could fool the idiots that you're competing and trying...game 7, down 1-0, in your own zone, and Marner was terrified of Brendan Gallagher...yep, we're going to win a Cup with this kind of leadership...your alternate captain...

It was interesting listening to Jonas and James Mirtle talk about the Leafs making decisions not to piss off their core players because they’re scared of driving them out the door.

I could see the thought process behind giving Marner a letter being “give him what he wants, what could it hurt?”

It stretches credulity to think of Marner in leadership terms.
