Lol all the negative folks around here think they can do better than Dubas on every front. You know, HF has some smart people. There are also smart people in media. Hey, I am even sure many of you are really smart. None of you sit in the room or on the phone calls where these decisions are made.

Marner's meeting with other teams next week, so the Leafs should be doing that too. Meet with Panarin, Duchene, Lee, etc. We can't let our RFAs hold us hostage, and we should have other viable options lined up or at the very least legitimately explored.

Having the potential to sign a top UFA and trading Marner for a massive trade return gives us more control of the situation then just sitting here twiddling our thumbs letting Marner sign an offersheet somewhere or leverage us into paying him substantially more than we're comfortable paying.

I really like this idea.

Send a message. I would rather Panarin and 4 x 1st round picks than Marner, honestly.

Cannot believe how much Marner and his camp have pissed me off, and he was by far my favorite of our kids. My kids have written Marner off, which surprised the heck out of me.

Point and Rantanen aren't as good as Marner. Marner also plays in all situations. If Matthews is getting over 11x5 and can't even hack it on the penalty kill, Marner deserves above what Rant and Point are getting, because he'll play in every situation, and is a threat every single time. Give him his contract, and give him the C too.
I heard that when tthe leafs were courting Tavares, they showed video of Marner to sell Johnny how much he can carry the kid. Imaging Johnny how great you would look when you elevate this mere mortal into the stratosphere of points!:sarcasm:

If they do lose marner you want to replace him with another forward? Instead of using the cap space on a legit top pair D ?

Marner and Z for Doughty +

Marner had a primary point for 27.6% of all leafs goals this year. Will a top pairing D help replace that?

I don't know why people are so upset if Marner decideds to explore other options. It really isn't all that much different than the Stamkos thing a few years ago... I realize Stamkos was an unrestricted free agent, but he explored other avenues, and crawled back to Tampa with his tail between his legs, and ended up taking their offer.

Agreed, maybe it would humble the Marner camp somewhat and knock them off their high horse

Stamkos also took a hometown discount to return to his team so they could ice a contender around him, something Marner has shown no interest in doing.

Maybe the fact that money and greed is more important to him than winning and playing for the hometown team has us just a little upset.

I don't think this was true (taking a discount). From what I recall, Tampa was not willing to offer him any more money than what he ended up signing for....

Because it shows he's ONLY about the money and does not care one bit about the team.....or winning a cup.

Those priorities are far down on his list. Which I want no part of on this team.

And how is that any different than the Stamkos scenerio?

It's unprecedented that a RFA openly admits and that they will talk to teams about offer sheets and what they have to offer. Not even Nylander did that for the record.

It's within his rights though for sure. He needs to do what he needs to do. There's nothing wrong with it. More players should be doing it.

I Don't think people should be criticized for honest and open communication.

I'd be upset if he said "Nope, no interest in signing an offersheet" and then went ahead and signed one.

You should tell your employers you are openly looking at their competitors because you want to be paid the most.

I never really understood these type of comments. The NHL opperates differently than your typical employerer... A lot of work places have unions that standardize your pay, to ensure that you're being fairly compensated. Thats all Marner is pursueing right now.

It was reported that Gross spoke to a number of teams regarding Nylander. That is really why agents get paid.

Yeah, I’d 100% leak that we are talking to some of the top UFA’s and may begin looking at the trade market for Marner.

It’s clear as day the Marner camp is pumping things to Dreger to set salary expectations high with people (which has worked with some lol).

So we might as well use the media to show that we are looking at other options, and our other options is more realistic than the Marner camp wanting a 12.5M offer sheet lol

I would say Dubas should talk to Rantanen when the window to talk to RFAs opens next Wed. but that ship sailed this past weekend.
