This Leafs-Lightning game is what a checking battle with talent and superb structure looks like. The degree of difficulty on these breakouts is so high, and yet the execution is so clean. Flyers have this mythologized idea of defense-ing like real men, but structurally, they could never play in a game like this because the pace of defense and countering is too fast. Checking doesn’t equal slowing the game down — that’s their misunderstanding.
