Crosby, while still good, is slipping. Malkin is just a lumbering hulk out on the ice. Letang is losing his legs as well. Next season these guys will be even further in decline. The Penguins have nothing after these three. Years of getting boat raced loom in their future.
Like the Flyers they should have started a rebuild three years ago instead of trading DCs to stay in the mix and then fail. Flyers+Penguins have a common factor-Hextall.
i quarentee they rebuild and win a cup again before the Flyers even figure out a direction

Sure seems like the same problems follow Ron Hextall around.
Can't blame Hextall really this is long term issues

The Penguins injury zone goes back most of the Crosby era and the blown leads about half of it.

At the start of the Crosby era for several years they were the comeback kids. They'd be down and out then blam goal goal goal goal win.

Then around the time they stopped being kids, they started being a team that blows big leads... a lot.

The Pens are a weird team to follow because they're, between cups, a lot like actually the Leafs tbh. Just you know the Cups do count for a lot ha ha.

But legit go back and see how often when they don’t win, they lose embarrassingly in playoff runs. Like there is a difference between losing and losing in a sad way. Being a Pens fan is feast or famine during the Crosby era... but like the feast is really really good and sustains you during the famine.

06 didn't make the playoffs
07 killed by Ottawa in 5
08 cup finals
09 cup
10 upset by f***ing 8th seed Montreal in rd 2 blowing a 3-2 serie_s lead
11 blew 3-1 series lead out in rd 1
12 Lost to the Flyers (😭) in rd 1.
13. Got embarrassed and swept in the Conference finals by the Bruins, the team tjey beat in the Iginla sweepstakes.
14. Blew a 3-1 series lead in the 2nd round to the Rangers
15. Dispatched easily in rd 1 by the Rangers in 5.
16. Cup
17. Cup.
18. RD 2 loss to the Capitals that allowed that demonic franchise to win a cup
19. Swept by the Islanders (wtf)
20. Eliminated in the playin by the f***ing Habs.
21.Won the division, lost in 6, blowing a 2-1 series lead to the Islanders by losing 3 in a row
22. Blew a 3-1 series lead against the Rangers in rd 1.

Like it's littlerally frequently cup or embarrassment with little in between.

11 and 22 are especially bad because they had built in excuses to bow out and still managed to do it in a way that is embarrassment

In 11 Crosby and Malkin were out so would have been no real surprise if they lost, but they still managed to do it in a pathetic fashion, blowing a 3-1 and losing f***ing 1-0 in game 7.

In 22 3rd string ahl goalie, for 6 out of 7 games... go up 3-1 yet they blow multiple goal leads in games 5, 6, 7 and get eliminated in ot killing a penalty.

The culture in Pittsburgh is wild, biggest issue imo is they've run bitch grinder coaches for the majority of the Crosby era and they're not builf for that so when they get leads they get extra bitch grindy and it blows up in their face... Legitimately watch their zone entry, they have generational offensive talent yet they're plan is almost always dump and chase, play the perimeter, cycle between side boards and behind the net. So often they'll grind around in the offensive zone, producing minimal shots, and even less genuine scoring chances, then give up the puck and the other team carries it into the zone the other way and scores. This has been true for years, and was true under Bylsma and Sullivan

But like 3 cups so you know whatever lol.

Any GM would be in a tough spot in Pittsburgh, kind of like Washington. They both should rebuild, but if done properly, they would have to move on from their aging superstar(s). Crosby, Malkin, and Ovechkin have been the faces of their franchise for over a decade. Not easy to really move on from them, but I guess they could considering CHI moved on from Kane

Washington is kind of doing it, while still remaining relatively competitive. Pittsburgh, not so much, but will still probably sqeak into the playoff this year.

Man speaking of jerseys I hate when moved renamed teams wear old city logos and jerseys... it feels like rubbing it in.

Even if it is nice to see the beautiful Whalers stuff every now and then

Fun fact I found a whalers hat in a store on a trip to London England and I bought it and ran into people from Hartford on a bus your of the Scottish Highlands... weird coincidence. But nope was just a Canadian Penguins fan in Scotland wearing a Whalers hat lol

Crosby letang and Ogre are still high level players. Ronald just fat out failed to build around them is what it boils down too. 2 re-signed to somewhat friendly tam deals and Ronald still shit the bed. Did nothing to address the goaltending. Should have sold what he could this past deadline (or fired previously) then let a new GM come in to retool to make another run or 2.

Hextall can show he's good at selling players and getting value. But this is now his second stint where he's real ass at bringing players in. Maybe he should try working as a consultant to arrange trades. The rest of the job isn't working

seems like 16 and 17 were the years you had a hot goalie in murray. i mean fleury in was fanstastic in 08 and 09, after that he wasnt the same until murray came in.

He is a scared dog. Wont commit to a rebuild or wont go all in. Pitt wasn't gonna rebuild so it was an odd hire to start. To waste what those 3 HOF have left is a crime. Guess he likes wasting players talent.

Rinaldo and mcginn were clearly steals. Gudas was good. After that what did he really do?

I remember Flyers fans were not received well when we pointed out their organizational need to build something around their core for a desperate last hurrah didn't remotely match a single skill Hextall has demonstrated.

Murray was huge in 16, split with Fluery in 17 but came in huge when Fleuryfaltered... yes imdeed goalies were a huge thing in 15 amd 16.

Also New coach
And Speed.

That was the way.

Team was built around Sullivan, Rutherford cleared out a bunch of players and they brought up Sullivan's AHL players to fill out the bottom six.

Pittsburgh's offense has always been top heavy, Crosby, Malkin and Letang, a few other skilled players, and then scrubs like Sheary who Crosby elevated.

That 2015-16 team only had 5 forwards with 30+ ES points, Crosby (26-35), Kessel (22-20), Malkin (16-15 in 57g), Hornqvist (13-23), Kunitz (15-19). Bonino and Hagelin stepped up in the playoffs. The rest of the forwards were guys like Rust, Sheary, Cullen, Kuhnhackl, Fehr.
