Islanders better hope he starts producing again because $9M for a 60 point player is pretty steep.

Also risky to sign a guy into his mid 30s.

Man, I vividly recall the days when some people were arguing in the prospects forum that he wouldn't be a good pro because he didn't score enough goals in Junior. Might have only been two people, but boy they were dumb.

He hasn't been a PPG player since 2018. Playing for Trotz may have been a reason, but he does have something to prove.

Hayes got 7 years $7.14 million for scoring 229 points in 382 games = 0.6 P/GP.

Barzal got 8 years $9.15 million for scoring 311 points in 360 games = 0.86 P/GP.

These guys think they’re A LOT more important than they really are.

Time for the government to withdraw support for HC, whether that be direct funding, support for Olympic teams, or how fees and donations are classified. From the Hockey Canada website:
The Foundation accepts donations for the purpose of establishing and growing a selection of endowment and general-purpose Funds. Caring Canadians who want to give back to the game can now do so knowing their gift to the game will have an impact for generations to come. Working with the Hockey Canada team, the Foundation puts gifts to work to help ensure Canada remains at the forefront in the development and promotion of amateur hockey.

No, I don't know how the government can actively punish HC; however, allowing this cesspool to represent Canada at international tournaments is tacit approval of their backroom cover-ups.

Barzal is 4 years later, and the cap is projected to rise in a couple years.

The Islanders don't have much choice, given most of their top players are over 30 and a rebuild is pending - let Barzal walk and things get real ugly, real fast.
Bailey (33), Lee (32), Nelson (31), Pageau (30), Palmieri (31), Mayfield (30), Varlamov (34)/Schneider (36).
As well as Cizikas (31), Clutterbuck (35), Martin (33), Parise (38).
