If Edmonton or someone else is willing to pay Hyman 6 million you have to let him go. There are cheaper options available in UFA. Start building again through the draft. I just wish we could get Connor Brown back

If Toffoli took 4.25 over 4 years and he’s much better than Hyman, Dubas should be fired if he offers anything above 4 without a salary cap increase.

the problem isn’t what Dubas is going to offer. It’s what the open market is going to offer. The management team has to balance that between how much the value Hyman as an integral part of the team. It’s going to be hard to compete with 5 million plus the chance to play with McDavid. If I’m Hyman I take that every day of the week and become a perennial 25+ goal scorer because McDavid will get you 4-5 open looks a game.

Its definitely not a fail if a signing helps bring you a cup home, sure the last 2 years he was a waste of cap space, but I'd take that any day if it meant winning a cup.
I hope that you're not impling that Bozak was the sole reason that they won the cup.

Scott Laughton & Adam Lowry who I like better than Hyman as players going forward just got deals done for 3-3.5m if it’s more than that than it’s been a slice, Zach. Go get that Edmonton or Detroit bag

It’s funny how Bell and Rogers, who own MLSE, seem to enjoy publishing salary inflating storylines for Leaf players. You never hear the media sensationalize what kind of salary a good foot soldier like Christian Soucy (who?) should get on the open market.

For a team that has a lot of “cap issues” with big money tied into the top end of the lineup, having Hyman Andersen and probably Kerfoot (outside shot of Holl) leave this off-season provides management with an opportunity to reshape the pieces around said core pretty dramatically.
It hasn’t worked with who’s been here up to now, so I kinda don’t get why there’s a lot of bellyaching over guys looking to get massively paid seeing themselves out stage left.

I said below 5 because the poster mentioned it. Unlikely he gets 5. It forms the basis of negotiation. He hits a lot and draws a lot of penalties...can play the pk and is generally a solid defensive forward who can score. A hyman type of player with a bit more nasty.
It's hard to see how far the Leafs and Hyman can be on a contract, if he doesn't think he'll get 5 or more on the open market. Unless term is the issue, but you shouldn't overpay for a guy like Hyman either way

if the problem is scoring goals in the playoffs, giving a guy with 5 in 32 career playoff games a big contract probably isn't going to be part of your solution.
Don't forget, he's becoming injury prone having not been able to have a full season in the past 3 years

Would you take him over 5 million 5+ years given the way he plays?

I love Hyman, but whatever contract he receives in free agency i don't see him living up to it, and those rumors are like 5.5-6 long term.

Agreed. 5x5 is the max I'd go, and even that will probably hurt us long-term. I love him, too, but yea this looks like his next contract will be a rough one tho I'm sure many teams will pay it.

Hyman over the past 2 years in 94 regular season games played has totaled 35 goals, and only Matthews, Tavares and Nylander have scored more and he is doing for the bargain basement price of $2,250,000. That is a .37 goals/game pace or 30-31 goals on a full 82 games season. So what is the market for a 30 goal capable pace player?

However now when its time for a raise to reward that level of contribution the Leafs cap heavy top 4 salary cap once again is going to squeeze the middle out as they let him walk for affordability reasons and they once again will be forced to go diving for bargain basement lower priced players that can replace Hyman and his goal and other contribution.

Similarly how Kapanen and Johnson were squeezed out last year after they proved to +20 goal capable middle team players but their $3 mils newly signed 1 year old deals became too expensive and they were dealt for futures in picks and prospects and their offense not replaced by the Thornton, Simmonds, Vesey, Boyd and Engval types brought in.

Previously how the JVR and Kadri and Connor Brown types forced out and cheaper solutions required.

Leafs cap Hell and Top 4 forwards continue to put the squeeze on the middle creating a perpetual "Have and Have Nots" annually with a rotating door where these cheaper contracts that surround the core are expected not only to replace the former production, but apparently expected to fix the Leafs and make them more Cup competitive in the process.

Its not hard to pinpoint why the Leafs continue to spin their wheels and become less and less Cup competitive with each passing year with this type of cap management strategy.

The guy has scored at a 30 goal pace on average the last 3 seasons without powerplay time. Regardless of who you play with you that is pretty impressive and will get you paid in this league.

Going to miss Hyman... brings it every single shift and the leafs need more of those guys not less.
Leafs need guys who elevate their games in the playoffs, not get worse, Hyman moving on is a blessing in disguise.

Hey, I thought this was a thread about Hyman not being worth $5 mil, so why are you quoting Mitch Marner's career playoff stats of 5 goals in 32 career games and his big contract probably isn't going to be part of the solution? ;)

If Hyman's 5 goals in 32 playoff games at $5 mil isn't part of the solution, surely then Marner and his 5 goals in 32 games at $11 mil should be viewed as a much bigger problem and not solution if even a player making 1/2 his salary is a problem.

Leafs can't afford Hyman playoff goal production, because they already have a player in the top 5 AAV contracts in the NHL scoring at that level, whom management sees as part of the solution.

@saltming the 50 point bet was only for hyman if he was a leaf!
Sadly walshy I think he's washed up. That knee doesn't seem to want to heal 100% and with his style of play the writing is on the wall. Will he ever play a full 82 games again? I'm not sure.
I will have to take solice in knowing that he has played at a 50 point pace in an 82 game schedule over the last 2 shortened seasons. That's victory enough in my heart and I will still flash out the # whenever I can.
That said who knows what will happen and I will be overjoyed if he's back next year.
So until there is a confirmed with link thread, our bet is still on
