How is it that other teams are able to sign these good players at reasonable prices? Is there a problem in Toronto?

I really expect that Hyman is not going to have much of an issue in retirement making a healthy living. I think if the situation in Toronto was considered ideal to him he'd had taken less than market value to stay. I think some people are going to be shocked by how little he signs for elsewhere. In the right U.S. state I could easily see it well under $4M aav.

We need some players to take home town discounts but that usually starts at the top of the food chain if you want to play follow the leader. Since that hasn't happened he need to get his money somewhere else.

You really need to see someone about getting a sense of humour.
That's about the 3rd one you've missed in this thread alone
I have an excellent sense of humor. If I have missed a joke, it is because it was a poor attempt or not at all funny.

Hyman signing for more than Laughton or Lowry has nothing to do with there being a problem in Toronto. Not sure what you are getting it here

if the problem is scoring goals in the playoffs, giving a guy with 5 in 32 career playoff games a big contract probably isn't going to be part of your solution.

Personally, I find the $11M winger who's a 170lbs weakling who has 5 goals in 32 playoff games a much bigger problem.

Leafs need guys who elevate their games in the playoffs, not get worse, Hyman moving on is a blessing in disguise.
He had a torn ALC one year and whatever knee injury he had this year. Wouldn't really say that is a fair comment

The QC
So with 9 F, 4 D and 1 G on the roster we have $11,755,217 in cap space left to work with.

We need 4 F, 2 D and 1 G (7 players total). Average contract $$ available is $1,679,316.71.

That does not account for any potential scratches. She's gonna be tight! We need at least 2 more guys under a mil I think.

I'm a leaf fan and a Hyman fan but I do not want him to take a discount...after Marner selfishly squeezed every nickel he could from the Leafs. Naaa .... taking a hometown discount and staying only makes Marners life easier at Hymans expense.

Shanahan warned the kids that getting greedy would mean a less competitive team.

Maybe Hyman might be thinking that way too...yeah, he takes a discount, then has to work his a55 off along the boards to get pucks for his linemate Marner...or he watches a few flybys by Marner from a distance.

Hyman over the past 2 years in 94 regular season games played has totaled 35 goals, and only Matthews, Tavares and Nylander have scored more and he is doing for the bargain basement price of $2,250,000. That is a .37 goals/game pace or 30-31 goals on a full 82 games season. So what is the market for a 30 goal capable pace player?

However now when its time for a raise to reward that level of contribution the Leafs cap heavy top 4 salary cap once again is going to squeeze the middle out as they let him walk for affordability reasons and they once again will be forced to go diving for bargain basement lower priced players that can replace Hyman and his goal and other contribution.

Similarly how Kapanen and Johnson were squeezed out last year after they proved to +20 goal capable middle team players but their $3 mils newly signed 1 year old deals became too expensive and they were dealt for futures in picks and prospects and their offense not replaced by the Thornton, Simmonds, Vesey, Boyd and Engval types brought in.

Kapanen and Johnson weren't squeezed out because of the big 4, they were traded to make cap room to sign Brodie in FA and Muzzin to an extension.

Time to find the next Hyman.

Galchenyuk Matthews Marner
Robertson Tavares Nylander
Kerfoot Foligno Mikheyev
Engvall Spezza Anderson

That's an awful forward group if you're expectation is for them to be competitive in the playoffs. Now, if you're promoting a multi-year retool, I can live with it (although I don't want any part of Foligno), but if your goal is for this team to compete in the playoffs, that forward group is getting you nowhere. Too many guys that don't produce points when the games get tough, and whose play styles aren't well suited for the playoffs.

I'd do everything in my power to let Seattle take Kerfoot, walk away from Foligno, trade Engvall and Mikheyev (if there are any takers) and start with this...

Robertson-Matthews-Nylander
Galchenyuk-Tavares-Marner
????-????-????
????-Spezza-Anderson

In a perfect world, I'd move Mitch as well, but there is no chance that Dubas moves Gaudreau... I mean Marner...

I see Oilers offering 5.75-6M over 4-5 years. I'm sure they think he'll be perfect for Draisaitl or McDavid.

If the Oilers offered that to Hyman, they'd be replicating the Lucic/Neal albatross. None of my business. Good luck!

Just feels like an Oilers move. But you're dead ass right, if Hyman won't take 4m sayonara. And I like the player a lot, but we cannot afford a bad contract considering that it's likely within a couple of years Tavares won't be worth 11m

It's an easy pass, and we may already be at a point where they just say thanks for all your hard work.

From an organizational point of view, it's regrettable that the Leafs can't reward him for his service and we're stuck with a core group whose weaknesses are Hyman's strengths, but we can't keep playing Cap Jenga and pay the same guys more money for the same thing.

More Hymans less Nylanders and Marners. Depsite Nylanders decent but short playoffs. Hymans are the type of player you win with!

Depends on the sticker price, because you win with 4-5 Hyman's, not one babysitting a handful of core guys.

Will Matthews retrieve the puck, hit, forecheck, and kill penalties? Likely not.

Well, did you watch the playoffs where Matthews did all of that except PK, which wasn't exactly his choice?

How do Marner's poor playoff performances excuse Hyman's own?
