I really expect that Hyman is not going to have much of an issue in retirement making a healthy living. I think if the situation in Toronto was considered ideal to him he'd had taken less than market value to stay. I think some people are going to be shocked by how little he signs for elsewhere. In the right U.S. state I could easily see it well under $4M aav.

He can always come back on a league minimum victory lap towards the end of his career. But for now he probably should go make his money as someone else's Questionable UFA Addition.

He's not as big a loss as people think sure you love him at 2.25 million but do you love him at 5-6 million? If You're honest the answer is no especially when you factor in his knee issues and the fact that he's played with Matthews and Marner/ Nylander his whole, is he going to be able to perform the same without players of that caliber on his line?

Even if he does end up in Colorado or Edmonton or Tampa, a place where he would have that caliber of player he still might not have the same chemistry

Zach Hyman is replaceable because Zach Hyman is depth, and no matter how good depth is it is, ALWAYS replaceable that's what makes a depth player a depth player they are ALWAYS replaceable

How is it that other teams are able to sign these good players at reasonable prices? Is there a problem in Toronto?
The problem with plug and play players is that their output is often a function if who they play with and in what situations. Hyman is an aging depth player and as such, shouldnt be drawing a crazy cap hit into the tail end of his career.

Brodie and Muzzin are signed to reasonable contracts. Matthews and Marner created a cap crunch, by being overpaid $2-3M collectively.
Even though Marner is grossly over paid the team could absorb that if it wasn’t for the real elephant in the room………the totally unnecessary and crushing contract of John Tavares.
That single signing set the table for this unbalanced team.
Add in the fact that Marner is totally unable to perform in the playoffs just makes it even worse.

Hyman's a hard worker and the team seems to really like him.

I still don't give him $6m per year. That wouldn't change whether the cap space was available or not.

The continue to playoff rant a bit. Spezza should have been riding shotgun beside 16 and 34 for a few shifts in game 7.

34 was double teamed leaving Hyman open for AAA chances that he unfortunately doesn't have the skill to finish. Spezza puts at least one of those away. Ah well.

Hmmmmmm the 4 teams playing for the cup had to deal with COVID and a flat cap……..they seem to be doing fine.
External factors that are applied to all team are nothing more then excuses, not reasons
So that’s on the GM than? And not an overpaid player?

The main problem with the AM and MM contracts and I’m not breaking anything new, but dubas didn’t get the AAV he wanted or the contract length. If they are not going to give you the term, then they don’t get the big money and you bridge them. The gm has the leverage, if they want to torpedo their career and have the agent slander you for not getting a deal done, well boo hoo. The problem is dubas gave them not only the term and AAV that they wanted but the bonus style contracts as well. I thought the contracts were really bad before COVID and some will disagree and that’s fine, but the flat cap put a fork in any sort of parade plans the leafs might have had during the matthews contract.

You can blame whoever you want - The bottom line is the team is in Salary Cap hell and the Manager REFUSES to rectify his mistakes and they are doubling down on this LOSER group. Good managers like Good Teams " FIND A WAY "!
Totally agree, dubas needs to pivot and trade marner. The flat cap will not work having tied up so much money in 4 forwards. To stay the course is ignorance of the highest order. But something tells me his ego will get in the way of any big changes.
