That still makes no sense. Buffalo isn’t making the playoffs this year.
Byram isn't there to help them make the playoffs, have no idea why you bring this up. Byram is just another younger piece for the Sabres to build around. He's 22 compared to 25.

Their defense is now Dahlin (23), Byram (22), Power (21), and maybe Samuelsson (23), Joker (24), Johnson (21). That's a pretty young, but dynamic group of defensemen.

More so, Dahlin, Byram, and Power are all listed as LD/RD.

If push comes to shove they can trade Samuelsson or Johnson for forward help. But Middelstadt was an RFA that they didn't really want to build around. It'd be like trying to build around Granlund.

They will have to re-sign him after next season. He will be a RFA, but still. If he's not interested in staying, he's out of there in a couple of years.

So think of it like the Wild trading Granlund for Fiala and then Fiala for Faber+1st

And then they can trade him, but he's a RFA.

Anyone else getting blue balls from Guerin's lack of direction? I know technically he doesn't have to work with, but the fact that he's staying on the pot and hoping...I don't know that they squeak into the playoffs and pull a Montreal is annoying to say the least.

It's a negotiable point, just like term, dollars and structure.

Problem is, it doesn't seem like we are gaining too much in those areas in exchange for the trade protections.
That's my position, it's a give and take biz. We use similar stuff in options or first position language in tv/film but you make damn sure you are getting something back

I pointed out that they have three LD signed for at least 7 years and your response was one guy is out for *this* season. I don’t see the point in trading for him for just this season unless it’s to make the playoffs.

They just signed all three of Dahlin, Power and Samuelsson to big contracts. They’re committed to them.

This move is like us trading Faber for Lundell or Jarvis to play center, despite us having Ek, Rossi, and Yurov as long term top 6 centers. It just makes zero sense from a Buffalo POV. I get why Colorado did the move. They need another top 6 center to pair with MacKinnon and Johansen wasn’t cutting it.

That depends, do you mean physically or mentally?
There is still a day and a half left, and I think the only piece with real value to move is Duhaime. Maroon might fetch something, but that would probably be reliant on the other team's doctors making sure he'll be good to go in time. Everyone else is either not going to get traded (ex. MAF) or doesn't have to be traded yet (ex. Dewar). I don't have blue balls, real or metaphorical, because there's not much to get excited about in this one.

I’m much more concerned about having good players on defense than the actual handedness of them. Sure it’s fun to joke about at times but I don’t really care

It weirdly bothers me a little bit, but I'd get over it extremely quickly if we had Makar, Fox, McAvoy and Faber.
What a weird sequence of players.

The equivalent would be if we had Makar-Fox-Faber (Makar = Dahlin, Fox = Power, Samuelsson = Faber “loose” value) the right side, all are signed for the next 7+ years, and we used Rossi to trade for the often injured Drysdale.

My reaction would be “why the f*** are we wasting assets on a position that doesn’t need help?”

I basically just meant I'd get over having 4 righties if they were all good. Just in general, not particular to any current goings on.

Just was reading this in the Athletic. We are 9 points out of a playoff spot, we should not be looking to acquire a forward.

You can move Lundell or Jarvis to wing, for one thing. Secondly, as mentioned, a few of them play both left and right defense. Third is that Buffalo may just simply want to move on from Middelstadt after all these, will he, won't he and got a pretty damn good deal if Byram can stay healthy. They can either flip Byram in a package, by himself or one of their other defensemen.

If 2019-20 Guerin could see what 2024 Guerin has done here, I think he'd fire himself. I've never felt like he has a coherent, long-term plan in place, but I swear 2019-20 Guerin at least said he wanted to get younger and faster and better, and didn't like the country club we had.

He’s like a politician campaigning for his first term at that point. Says what everyone wants to hear and then proceeds to do the exact opposite for 4 straight years.

I don't think I expected him to admit in public that he made a mistake re-signing Foligno, Gaudreau, Hartman and Zucc(Merrill and Goligoski too, for that matter) so early, and with NMC's or NTC's, but I sure do hope that he admits it to himself in private.

His "plan" is pretty helter skelter. Best as I can figure, it's buy out Suter and Parise, and tread water till the cap penalties are done, doing things that will make the fans keep buying tickets, while he keeps his job. Don't ask me what loading up on mediocre veterans and coaches who have never won anything is about.

I know that this sounds really negative, but my overall view of BG is more nuanced. I like that he has held onto draft picks, drafted fairly well, and built up the prospect pool. I like the Brackett hire, and the organization seems to be fairly well run, when he uses consensus to make decisions. What worries me is his impulsiveness, and his seeming inability to understand that aging hockey players are declining hockey players. I also have no clue what the HR incidents that both he and his main assistant were about - after getting rid of a toxic personality like Fenton who seemingly had no management/people skills, it was disturbing to hear that we might have another potential loose cannon leading the team.
