More importantly, acquiring guys like Jost and Steel makes no sense if you aren't going to give them a proper chance to succeed.
These are players that have failed at the top level multiple times. How long is their leash and how can you possibly game plan for them being in a spot when we know they have not performed at a high level?

This is dumpster diving al a Doug riseborough days

No, Dumpster Doug would use the waiver wire and didn't have a salary cap to deal with in his early days. Minnesota needs to fill out their roster and believe that both Steel and Jost have some potential left in them. They cost nothing and there is nothing wrong with them being on the roster. You're just yelling at clouds at the moment.

TBF to Steel, ANA has been a bad team overall the entire time he's been in the NHL. He's also only a $825k x 1 contract. It's a good gamble to make for the GM as a FA signing. It doesn't cost the team anything if he doesn't pan out.

Dumpster diving is what you get when there is so much dead cap. Good players don't want/take 1 year dirt cheap deals. For as much as everyone is loving the prospect pool, there really isn't much in it that is ready for the NHL for this season.

I got nothin on Jost. I'd rather have the $2m in cap space than him.

That’s 2.8 million in Steeljost

And? It's 2 different contracts, Jost is $2m of that.

Steel is being paid in the same ballpark as Dewar and Duhaime. He's not worse than either of those 2 players, and nobody complains about them being on the roster. It's also the same as the ELCs in the AHL, and none (except maybe Rossi and Addison) of them are pushing for roster spots.

If Rossi deserves to be on the NHL roster he needs to be better than Dewar, Duhaime, Jost and Steel. This isn't a very high bar.

I mean , we could have just kept Fiala

With guys like Steel and Jost you hope that they have a Tage Thomson type breakout. Some players come into their own later.

Have a feeling Dewar is going to separate himself from Jost, Duhaime and Steel over the course of the season and steal a Top 9 position. He plays with a ton of pace and he seems more versatile than the rest
Not this year, I don't think, for Dewar. I see him being a 4th liner that will be depended on for smart, versatile play- I can see him being a PK regular if he can win FO's. Even if Gaudreau leaves after this year Rossi will probably get the nod over Dewar to be the 3C, which i think is the right call. Dewar is a better defensive C, but Rossi has a higher offensive ceiling.
I would like to see Dewar get a chance to explore his offense, but i don't see how unless there are a ton of injuries. He has a sneaky good shot, and is quick.

Easily could have , without much shuffling at all. Fire Jost and Goligoski into the sun and you have a long term Fiala. The end
maybe. with Boldy needing a new contract soon even with trading players away it would of made it interesting for extensions and signings. could of been done and this year would be fine, going forward if the cap didnt jump like we hope it could of been bad.

Training Camp opens today. First preseason game is on Sunday.

7 total preseason games, I wonder how many they'll have a stream for? My guess is the last 2 (both home, roster is mostly set, and the broadcast crews need to shake off rust).

Who replaced Goligoski and Jost? And for how much?

Fiala replaces Jost. Addison and 1 pressbox guy replaces Goli. MN is slightly under the cap.

It's been gone over many times for re-signing Fiala for anything under $8m/yr. It's still the same: Jost and Kulikov traded for whatever, Goli not re-signed, Addison takes the 6D spot, and a 1 man pressbox.

Except that Jost took Sturm's spot.

Addison is also a rightie, Goligoski is leftie.

Finally that would cut into depth if there are injuries.

Addison, Duhaime and Boldy all need contracts next season. If Boldy builds on last season, I couldn't see him taking less than 6 million a year even on a bridge contract.

A lot of fans are looking at next season, but it's 24-25 that's going to be an issue:

Zuccarello, Foligno and Hartman are all up for contracts. There is going to be a lot of roster turn over in the next two years.

MN needs a 3rd righty for their d-corps. Brodin, Goli, Merrill, and Middleton are all lefties.

Steel/Rossi take Sturm's FWD roster spot (12 roster FWDs). Dewar took over the 4C spot after Sturm was traded. Jost also wasn't good (or suited) in filling the 4C spot with D-Lo and Duhaime. I had Sturm walking after the season before he was traded.

The only depth it cuts into is the 6/7D spot. Last season with Benn playing about half the season proved a slightly warm body can fill that spot. The upgrade from Jost + Goli to Fiala + Addison is very large.

The team would have returned 11 of 13 FWD spots (just Fiala instead of Jost), 5 of 6 d-men (instead of 6 of 7), and 1 goalie from last year's team.

The smart move would have been to sign Fiala to a more reasonable long term deal last off season when we all wanted them to.

We are paying our 1C $1.7MM currently and people are upset that we didn’t bookmark another $8MM to a winger for 8 years. If any of the Fiala complainers end up crying about our center depth over the next five years, just know it would have been so much worse with Fiala.

Do we still get to cry if it continues to be shit without Fiala?

Apparently I'm alone in this, but I'd much rather have Fiala and no centers than no Fiala and no centers.

Zuccs - Hartman - Kaprizov
Fiala - Gaudreau - Boldy
Duhaime - EEK - Foligno
Dewar - Steel - ???

40 million (Greenway comes back)

Spurgeon - Brodin
Middleton - Dumba
??? - ???

Merill comes back

23.22 million

Fleury
Gustafsson

4.87

Minnesota is sitting at 80.833. Good for this season right?

What about next season when Boldy and Duhaime need contracts, Minnesota has to replace Gaudreau (will Rossi step in?), replace Dumba (will Addison cover that? and Gus is replaced with Wall but that carries another 200K raise.

It didn't help that Kaprizov waited until the 11th hour to sign his extension. If he had signed earlier, Guerin might've had a better idea how high he could go with Fiala's offer.

It was understandable but if they got a 1 year deal done then it couldn't have been that much harder to get a 6 or 8 year deal done. If you look at any roster you have to keep the talent, Kap and Fiala should have been the priority. Probably time we just move on because its all too late now but it might take a season.

All this does is prove we could have kept Fiala. We all knew we'd need cheap vets and ELC's to get us through the cap. And we're still gonna need those without Fiala. So what exactly did we save or gain by moving Fiala? The bottom six or bottom pairing guys that we all complain about anyway?

We gained Faber and Ohgren. I was all aboard keeping Fiala at all costs (cutting/trading Dumba and Zucc) and as I move on to the less electric offense we will have these coming years I like to recall one person stating 8m+ invested in wingers with no C is a problem when you have no cap. It is true and it does blow, hopefully BG finds a way to snag Horvat if rumor is true he got low balled pretty badly.

We could have done it for one year, maybe 2. Still no centers and and a very weakened defense.
The math and mental gymnastics can continue any way you guys want. But Fiala is gone, and I for one don't think he really wanted to be here long term anyway.
