There had to have been some evidence of distribution. There's no way this termination sticks otherwise.

I woke up today with a very different feeling about this entire thing than the day before. It all leaves a sour taste in my mouth, and I don't see how this doesn't affect the team for negative next year.

What a ****ing collapse. Typical LA Kings, though. Gave us the three best years in franchise history followed by this circus. We forgot how this works, I suppose.

And Saad wouldn't be dealt by the Hawks. All I'm saying is wait and see how it plays out, much less even starts to play out 3 months from now. You can't say one way or another how it's going to affect the team. Not on June 30th.

OXY is serious and it sounds like it is also a quantity thing

Not serious enough to warrant terminating his contact. If he's dealing then that's another story, but I just don't see why he wouldn't have been arrested.

They are engaged.

Were engaged.

Oxycodon is highly addictive and dangerous, and lethal in cases where people used it recreationally.

I'm concerned for Richards and anyone else who may be on this stuff. This could really lead to a downward spiral, to the point where his career may very likely be in jeopardy.

If he has an amount that wasn't prescribed to him there is absolutely grounds for breach providing that it is enough to warrant intent to distribute which can be as small as 100 to 200 pills. That is absolutely grounds for a material breach. Times have changed and the Kings like many NHL teams have strict policies regarding off ice conduct especially where prescription narcotics are concerned. This could be grounds.

Usually when it comes to drugs its not just one type thats involved. To me thats the scary part.

Via the precedents, doubtful if it's simply a bottle of pills.

But I feel like we're still missing large amounts of information. Especially since, as you said, DL and Solly wouldn't have entered this knowing damn well it was frivolous. The NHL also would have advised them against it so they at least feel like there's something to it as well.

This is true. The contract being terminated had to go through the NHL front offices first, correct?

Unless it's a MAJOR quantity (which he would have been arrested for), there's zero chance his contract is terminated

He might have been arrested and it hasnt been released yet. It happens all the time. Charges also may not have been filed as of yet. Just because it hasn't been made public yet doesn't mean it isn't in process.

Also it can be as small an amount as 100 to 200 pills in some cases to prove intent to distribute. It absolutely can be grounds for a breach of contract. Time will tell.

I can't believe the speculation in this thread.

Did any of you read the article?

Nowhere does it say he possessed any drugs. It merely says he was questioned about oxycodone.

We need more facts than jumping to conclusions about possession.

you are not the only one--so before you pat yourself on the back---a few of us had it--at least I PMD an LA mod to let him know--did you?

You puck moving defensemaned a mod? I hope you bought him dinner first

The article clearly states:

NHL officials have been notified that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigation into ex-L.A. Kings player Mike Richards involves the prescription drug oxycodone ... multiple sources tell TMZ Sports.

Our sources say Richards was stopped while crossing from the United States into Canada on June 17th ... and we're told he was questioned about oxycodone pills, a powerful painkiller.

For the record, Richards has NOT been charged with a crime.

Nowhere does it say anything about possession. Any comments above about possession are pure speculation at this point in time.

Most comments about possession are that it doesn't seem like enough to terminate his contract. Your point that he may not have even had any oxy on him only strengthens the argument that there needs to be more to this.
