Mike Richards VI (UGH): The Armageddon Edition (MOD NOTE POST #1)

Translation?

We all support Tottenham Hotspur, an English football club from North London. "Yiddo" is a slang term for supporters of the club because it has traditionally had a lot of Jewish supporters; kind of like how supporters of Arsenal are called "Gooners" (they call themselves "Gunners") and supporters of Chelsea are called "*****."

The LA Spurs club meets at the Greyhound to watch matches, it's great bar on Figueroa in Highland Park. I live near there, and it looks like Dawdler does as well.

If its intent to distribute it's more than just a drug problem. I speculated pharma earlier and I know there's a crackdown on people buying drugs in Canada and bringing them to the states for sale.

There definitely has to be more to this. A couple oxy pills isn't gonna make the whole hockey twitter sphere remain hush and throw out hints of "shocked" and "wowza".

Not many details but doesn't seem bad enough to warrant termination.

what if there was a written/verbal agreement with management where Richards was prohibited from using? what if there were other underlying circumstances? what if this isnt the first time hes been reprimanded for drug use in LA?
what if it limited his ability to travel to the US? SO MANY QUESTIONS

You are assuming it is only a "couple of pills" though, right? Who knows what the actual amount of pills (providing TMZ is correct) are and rather or not he was charged with anything.

That's my point. If it was only a couple of pills this would be a relative non starter, certainly wouldn't lead the Kings to terminating the contract imo. Gotta be more to this.

It would seem so. If he had like one bottle on him, then I don't see how they'd be able to terminate him and expect it to hold up.

Either it was a lot or there's another part of the story.

I doubt many of us are legal experts, but having said, bringing a controlled substance across the border (if proven, and if it is without a doctors prescription) is very much a crime. LA would obviously be thrilled to get out of the contract, I think this could merit it.

I called it and my post was deleted.

You 'called it' without a source. Throwing out accusations/speculation like that isn't going to stand, all the other 'what ifs' were deleted as well until we could find a reliable source. I have no need to defend why, it's all over the thread.

And yeah, we don't know anything about amount or context. i.e. what agreements did he have with the organization and so on. I have a hard time buying it's a simple bottle of pills with how shocked and awe'd hockey media was.

That's fine.

Well, now what happens? Is that grounds for termination? Solly and Lombardi are lawyers...they aren't dumb.

Via the precedents, doubtful if it's simply a bottle of pills.

But I feel like we're still missing large amounts of information. Especially since, as you said, DL and Solly wouldn't have entered this knowing damn well it was frivolous. The NHL also would have advised them against it so they at least feel like there's something to it as well.

There had to have been some evidence of distribution. There's no way this termination sticks otherwise.

I woke up today with a very different feeling about this entire thing than the day before. It all leaves a sour taste in my mouth, and I don't see how this doesn't affect the team for negative next year.

What a ****ing collapse. Typical LA Kings, though. Gave us the three best years in franchise history followed by this circus. We forgot how this works, I suppose.

I can't help but think there are some federal level investigations going on here.

I know some sports folks have heard "border issue", but the fact that it's a "serious" situation without an arrest is a red flag to me. The agencies and departments that control the borders don't report arrests or investigations until well after the fact.

If it is a homeland security issue, no one, including the Kings, is going to know what is exactly going on. The league or the team might get contacted about an investigation and a general description, but I seriously doubt any details would be given.

Yea, it's just a scenario, but it would explain a whole lot.

I didn't read this whole thread but the Toronto Sun is reporting it is a RCMP/Canadian Border Services Agency investigation, so Homeland Security wouldn't be involved as it seems whatever is going on is related to border issues heading into Canada, not the US.

I won't speculate on what the issue is, but with it involving CBSA, it could impact his his ability to get a work visa in the US, which might be the difference between this and Voynov. Depending on Voynov's record, he may still be able to get a work visa and enter Canada. But I guess we'll see what comes out of this and while I wish Mike Richards the best, if cap space doesn't come into play, it doesn't really impact the Kings any more than Grant Fuhr's cocaine problems didn't tarnish the Oilers.

good to know there are some Spurs fans here as well. I went to teh Greyhound once a few years ago I think. I've been meaning to go more often. I've been following Spurs for about 10 years now. When the season starts again I'll make an effort to get out there. It's hard when I can DVR them and sleep in, lol. But the atmosphere is always a lot of fun.
