clicked on wrong Quote. I'm still impressed that Vads is your idol.

Sorry to be off topic but Vads was very underrated. He would've been great in torts' system. I remember him blocking a lot of shots. Like many rangers fans at that time, I hated the trade but Vads earned my respect just like Ratelle did with the fans up in bean town.

As to the Mess debate, I would've loved to see him as coach. But I do understand the Xs and Os part and his lack of experience. I thought I read somewhere that the Oilers had previously offered him the coaching job so the experience part is not a concern for them.

good riddance. wish he was in vancouver so he could be further away from NYC. i never want messier involved with this organization in an official capacity again.

I can barely supress my lack of surprise.
This is exactly the Kevin Lowe way.

I wonder what will happen if the Oiler don't make the playoffs. My guess is....nothing.

The brainwashing of being a "winner", a "leader", and "tough" are why we have threads like this. People get brainwashed by these buzz words and stop living in reality. That's why a lot of players go too high in the draft, people are enamored with intangibles. So this spills over into coaching where being a "winner" and "leader" as a player makes you a better coach than an actual coach.

Could not disagree more with this, at least regarding leadership and mental/physical toughness. It may be overrated but it certainly exists and contributes to winning hockey games.

I've been watching sports in general for over 8 months and I can tell you right now that we're a .000 team.

I can't figure out if OP is being snarky in the title or not. Thanks Slats for not giving into Messier's arbitrary demands and involvement or thanks Slats for letting the most important piece of this franchise walk away.

Messier being a Hall of Fame player does not warrant a HC position.

Including Jacques Lemaire, there is probably a very very small group of HOF'ers that make good coaches.

Messier would be a failuer and being who he is would mean a year longer based on rep alone.

Good thing he cried all the way back to Edm.

2nd time he *****ed his back to that part of the world

Have absolutely no problem with this. Good luck to him, but no way in hell would I advocate for a bigger role in this organization than the one he had, whatever it was. Actually I'm happy with this.

The most important piece of this franchise? Messier hasn't been the most important piece of this franchise in quite some time.

That title would go to Henrik Lundqvist at the moment.

And just for the record. My original post was about losing Messier to the Oilers. He was a Ranger by choice after he retired. Something changed and I'm bothered by it. Excuse me.

I will direct you to Gretzky's coaching career and tell you to let us know how that went.

GL to Messier and thanks for the memories!

I'm happy with AV but I'm bummed Messier is no longer with the organization. I feel like I can't have nice things because the organizational leaders keep pissing off our legends. Trading Park and Ratelle away like it was nothing. Leetch sent packing on his birthday. Pissing Messier off to the point that he's leaving NYC for Edmonton. A 90 year old franchise and nothing is sacred.

As someone who will cheer when Sather is finally gone even if we win the cup the next five consecutive years for the sole reason of the Brian Leetch situation, I have a lot of trouble sympathizing with Messier here. As far as we know, Sather simply didn't think he was the right man for the job. It's not like he was bullied; he was passed up in favor of a former Jack Adams winner.

You're really bad at taking the context and the tone into consideration. It scares me that posters will assume the most ridiculous inference possible and make a reply on it.
