Not correct ..being a fan for say 35 or 40 years means you know a lot more about hockey than most here who never even saw the 94 team...you teeny boppers have to put in your time....the hate here for Mess and the 94 team is disgusting...a real lack of respect..

Respect and misguided loyalty are two entirely different things.

Just because someone is a long-term fan doesn't mean they automatically want Messier anywhere near the team.

It's attitudes like that which led to Messier playing far past when he should have retired for the Rangers.

How do you know? Sather didn't sign all these UFA's to send them to Hartford.

Really like Haley but he was always a bit of a long shot to make the team. San Jose is not really a tough team but neither are the Rangers. Haley is a middleweight. A bit like Prust--not as good a player. He fought Stortini--a much bigger player and a legit goon in Hartford's first game and didn't do all that great. Haley would make the team tougher--but not necessarily better and there are limitations to just how much Haley can do as far as fighting the really big and tough guys.

This is a pragmatic move by Messier. The Oilers are absolutely stacked up front - when those younger guys mature, watch out.

They have a rookie coach behind the bench, and a team thats still extremely green. What better scenario for Messier than to step in as head coach when that franchise is ready to take off?

Eakins must already hear the footsteps of the good ol' boys network ready to trample him.

Yup, this is how I see it too. It is apparent that Messier has HC aspirations in the foreseeable future (without prerequisite of paying dues to get the experience). And Edmonton is the best place in this regard (young talent & rookie coach) especially given his connections within the Oilers organization.

Did Messier had any notable hockey accomplishments (not just reaching whole career milestones) since he first left the Rangers for Vancouver? BTW that separation was also due to what he perceived was personal disrespect by the Rangers organization - Smith was not willing to increase his salary above what #99 was making.
