Look, Torts was not the guy but I do believe Messier was the right pick. One Rangers fan opinion. sorry I started a sh&^ Storm (not really).

PS Messier would have lit a fire under Nash. AV will not.

In other words, you have no idea. Thought so.

There's a certain group of fan that will just not let 94 go, it's remarkable. People love living in the past and pretending like the 94 players' **** don't stink. Seriously this doesn't seem to be the case with the gentleman in question here, but quite often it's casual fans that know nothing about the Rangers other than them winning the cup in 94 and Mess being a tough leader that got them there. So that's all they can ever talk about.

And just for the record. My original post was about losing Messier to the Oilers. He was a Ranger by choice after he retired. Something changed and I'm bothered by it. Excuse me.

he made up a job for himself in the ranger organization after practically declaring himself GM.

OP is right, respect does matter and Messier doesn't have any respect for paying his dues.

Thinks he shouldve gotten an NHL HC job with no prior coaching experience. Pretty laughable.

Thank God. Never come back.

Meh, he can come back to watch games and for events, but i really don't want him in the organization anymore.

He clearly only cared abuot himself. The fact that he thought the coaching job would be handed to him is absurd. Guy has absolutely no experience coaching.

Look at NHL players who become head coaches, they work their way through the ranks (oates, sutter, etc.)

handing an unqualified coach the reigns to a so-called "win-now" team is absolutely juvenile and unnaceptable.

I hold Messier in as high a regard as any Ranger fan should, but when ego gets in the way of what's best for the team, there is no excuse.

He shouldn't be a part of the organization outside of a cheerlead (i.e. graves/gilbert) or commentator (leetch/duguay)

And to the OP, I don't care if you were born in the 20's, the signature move for someone who has had their opinion dismissed is a person who brings up the "i watched this many years."

even fire sather agrees with sather here

I support Sather for the most part, now. As doom and gloom as people are, hes done a pretty good job since the first lockout.

Or maybe I just have low expectations because I became a fan basically in the 96-97 playoffs and didn't see another playoff game till 2006.

No biggie, not losing sleep over it. I need guys in the org that are experienced and not in here based on something 20 years ago.

The hate for messier tonight is surprising. He's a born winner (and leader). Some dude who had Roberto and the Sedin Brothers as our savior... no wonder Mess was pissed.

Yeah Messier is more qualified than AV who had the Canucks in the playoffs every year.

Reasoning "Hes a winner" Alright.

Stop while you're ahead  You being a fan longer means nothing, as you've been showing and as Bob has pointed out.

No one here is saying they "hate" messier. But the way he acted was like an entitled teenager.

Did you even pay attention when Gretzky coached in Phoenix?

Just because you're a good player doens't mean you can be a good coach with no experience.

Serious question, what was your opinion of how Messier's tenure went in Vancouver?

Because he pretty much single-handedly dragged that team down with his ego.
