This is fair feedback and I don't necessarily disagree with it, but have one caveat.... McDavid tends to be his most productive towards the end of the season regardless of year. Most years his December and January are slump'ish by his standards. His March/April stats by proxy are always quite high.
Not sure which I'd prefer seeing: 70+ goals or 100+ assists (not that he's pacing for 100 but the ratio of g/a could easily sway; no way is McDavid doing both).
Obviously, we haven't seen a 70 goal season in ages (Selänne and Mogilny with 76 in 1992-93), but 100 assists is actually way rarer of a feat, achieved only by Gretzky (11 times), Lemieux and Orr (both once).
70+ goals has been done only one more times but by eight different players.

Its still so crazy to me that Bernie Nichols is part of that list. Gretzky being one of them is impressive enough but being responsible for two others on the list? Amazing.

Again, this is assuming McDavid doesn't miss any games. Even a few games lost would really hurt his chances. But his probability of reach 150 points is now about 5% higher than it was at the start of the week.
Would be great to see someone do it after all these years of "players are so good it is impossible now".
The recent crackdowns on goaltender equipment, a trend towards smaller players and speed, and the lack of physical play, obstruction, and interference opens up more east-west plays again finally.. and it is showing in scoring the past few years.

I recall the shift starting around 2017-18 or so, when I (again... finally...) began seeing shooters frequently beating goalies with short-side shots and even sometimes slappers from distance. You could also see, around that time, that forwards were getting clever with shooting and often began shooting for the top corners in tight, shooting beside the goalies' ears/head, etc. (Of course, modern stick technology has made this more feasible.)
Before about 2017, and going back to about 1996 or something, I just did not see goalies getting beaten regularly on the short side.

Nicholls had 87 ES points that year, only 23 were with Gretzky. (There's still some indirect benefits - opponents were generally focused on stopping Gretzky's line, so it freed up Nicholls to have easier matchups then he'd otherwise get).
He had 49 PP points, 30 of which were with Gretzky. And 11 of his 14 SH points were with Gretzky.
Even if you take away every single ES point Nicholls got with Gretzky, he still would have been T-7th in ES scoring that year (with Gretzky, Lemieux and their linemates taking up four of the top six spots). Nicholls had an incredible season in terms of ES production (but it's also fair to argue that his PP and especially SH scoring were boosted by Gretzky).
Yeah it turns out he scored a lot on his own and probably still would've touched 100 points again that season. Even without Gretzky he was a great player so it does make a bit of sense I suppose. One hell of a season that's for sure.
I've written up on Bernie Nicholls in an attempt for him not to be just some trivia answer or dismissed as a product of Gretzky or an exemplar of how easy it was to score in the eighties or whatever.
It's not an exact comparison of course, but you see a guy like Robertson who looks so gumpy skating, and yet still succeeds, and you think of Nicholls.
He was an exceptionally good player in all areas except skating, which probably looked worse than it was due to his gumpy skating stride. He had one of the best shots in the league, and was one of the smartest players in the league, both with, but more importantly, without the puck, this being a key trait of Jari Kurri, so no surprise Nicholls meshed well with Gretzky.
He was generally considered the Kings best player before Gretzky came in over Robitaille and Carson. Before 1988-1989, he didn't play much with guys like Robitaille and Carson, nor too much with Marcel Dionne before, his main linemates early on was Jim Fox. Few would take Hartford era Ron Francis over LA era Nicholls in the eighties, they just had dramatically different fortunes in the early nineties, where Nicholls joined a couple of defensive teams from one of the most offensive teams in LA, but most impactfully, Nicholls had to deal with the illness and death of his infant son which understandably derailed his attention to hockey. Thought to be lazy and unmotivated (the former cause of his skating stride, the latter probably due to incorrectly attributing early career flamboyance to his mid nineties years where he definitely should not have been motivated by hockey given what he was going through), Nicholls was actually generally considered the best athlete on teams he played, leading to a late career resurgence.
His points together numbers for 1988-1989 (and full career):

I can't think of an example of the top of my head, but I thought this could be an interesting topic. Obviously the answers will be very subjective. Who are some players that you feel were the opposites of what they are widely perceived to have been, either in a certain facet of the game (ie...
... quest to be the ATD team with the strongest mustache game. If you ain't got Lanny, you're just whistlin' in the wind. EDIT: You also have Lanny! Hands down, the lipbush trophy goes to your squad.
I can't think of anyone who's even close right now. He's been bottom 10% of the league for defensive play the last few years. Even at their worst, Gretzky/Lemieux/Ovechkin were never among the absolute worst in the league. I don't know... I have a hard time imagining anyone would try to argue...

Some nice features on Nicholls from different stages of his career:
Good video from his Chicago days in the mid nineties, Nicholls enjoyed a resurgence even in his mid thirties due to time healing the tough tough times he had in the early nineties, how good he always was, and a bit due to the league slowing down a bit in the mid/later nineties.
It won’t happen. This thread gets made every year, and every year he slows down in the second half because of the grind and teams playing tighter hockey due to the playoff race. He’ll very likely finish between 120 and 130 again, as usual.
If he gets 130+, I’d be very, very impressed. That would basically be the modern day equivalent anyway. Nobody has hit 130+ since Lemieux and Jagr in 1996.

As much as I think 150 is possible this is more or less what I feel. Yeah he always does great in the last stretch run of the season but there’s always a few months in the middle where he’s coasting a bit. Makes sense to me because you have to save some steam for the playoffs somehow. I think he will get 130+ but I wouldn’t bet on 140.
He’s paced for 150+ several times now in the first half (excluding the covid season), yet he has never actually hit 150 (or even approached it). What does that tell you?
