In reality, I expect he'll get more money than Eichel so it'll most likely be in the 10.5 - 11 range. But it's also possible they'll use the increasing cap / inflation and whatnot and try to ask for more than that.

I love this reply. Make a very valid comment on the credibility of the rumour, then insult the Leafs as if the rumour is legit. Classic.

Arizona will offer sheet him at 14 million per. They will pay for this through revenue sharing aka Toronto’s money. Players love going home now. It’s all the rage.

So yes. More than McDavid

In some ways I hope he gets more then McDavid but that is based on the cocky Leafs fans . Now there are a lot of good TML fans as and for those long suffering fans I hope they get to enjoy a cup .

Reality is Matthews seems like a good loyal kid and I can see him taking a discount to win . He will also make lots of $$$ from endorsements from being in a hockey crazy market like Toronto .

I lol at the fans thinking they will offer sheet him . I doubt he would even sign one , There would have to be a riff between him and the TML management for him to sign an offer sheet and there no way in hell TML management lets that happen . Maybe he plays a year for Arizona when he close to 40 to finish off his career at home .

In fairness your first sentence literally describes the Leafs since the last lockout minus the last 2 years.

Well the minus the last 2 years is key there isn’t it ? It’s only been since then we have signed big plyers (Marleau, Tavares). Players want to win.

Is Arizona that far off? Their defence is at par with if not better than Toronto’s. They have a goalie who doesn’t play dodge ball now.

Forwards could use some work sure. Nothing a 4th year home grown talent like Mathews couldn’t help. He’d be a god in the desert. A very rich god.
 
Such a desperate click bait article. I like Matthews a lot but he's not at Mcdavid's level. He's in the same tier as the next generation of young stars such as Eichel, Laine and Draisaitl. Mcdavid's assists alone are greater than Matthews total points the past 2 seasons.
 
Matthews will be getting 10 million at the most, aka the going standard rate for franchise #1 centres in this league moving forward, see Eichel, Kopitar etc. I could see Dubas, Shanahan and company getting him locked up at 9.5 though.
 
I don't understand how Matthews could be worth more than Kucherov. I understand there is a premium on C, that they are in different situations. Matthews is a great goal scorer that any team would love to have but I just find anything over 9/9.5M is just too much until he consistently leads the league.
 
AM absolutely should get more then Eichel bc AM is better and the cap has risen. Not sure if he would get McDavid money.....I’m guessing about 11-11.5 million

I will put it in some perspective for you. In kucherovs 2nd year, he scored 65 points in 82 games on the third line as a forward. Matthews scored 63 points in 62 games on the first line as a center in his second year. Matthews will get locked up for 8 years. He will definitively outscore Kucherov before his contract ends and will have the additional defensive responsibilities that a center has. The contract value is calculated to account for the peak years
