Eklund Rumor: Matthews to get more than McDavid?

Isn't this usually how contracts work in sports? A star player signs a record breaking contract and sets the norm, a few years later and several others have passed it... Look at Lebron in the NBA, or the multitude of QBS in the NFL that signed long term deals over the past few years (before this offseason). Salaries will keep going up until there is another lockout

What happens when Marner outscores Matthews and Tavares? Does he ask for $11m+

Matthews will be offered and sign for the highest amount possible while also keeping the team together. I can't see this being all that difficult of a negotiation. I'm glad Orr spoke out, because the chatter is really unnecessary.

Yes Matthews will get the highest amount but from another team.

Wont this kind of decide whos team the Leafs management think it is? Matthews or Tavaras. Maybe they give him the exact amount as JT? Anyway, he is stupid good but has no business getting more than McDavid.

Isn't that pretty much what he said?

Leafs fans refuse to believe Matthews is seeking to max out his contract.
Proof is in whether he signs this summer or waits until July 2019. I'm honestly not sure what the dude want, but his action (or non action) will tell me

the thing is, you don't know he is seeking to max out his contract. just because he hasn't signed an extension when he is eligible, doesn't mean what you are saying is correct. he is betting on himself next season to produce like a franchise 1C so he can get rightfully paid like one.

[MOD] Until Matthews clears 100 points he is definitely not getting more than McDavid. I'm 90% sure he will take Tavares money at 11 million or maybe a bit of a discount at 10 to 10.5 million.

I'd be willing to wager he makes at least McDavid money, but the last poster I bet with welched.

In this case it is the natural consequence of them imposing an 8 year term. We had Crosby as the last cap circumvention deal but then Malkin paid less but at a much higher cap hit. Then Kane and Toews set a baseline. Since then, cap growth explains the salary escalation

He simply does not deserve it tbh.

forget the whole whose better Matthews vs McDavid debate and all the other BS. The point is - Matthews is a tremendous player, with tremendous potential, but there currently are SOME question marks around him:

1. He got injured
2. He underperformed in the playoffs
3. Rumor of issues with coach (which I guess Leafs know if true or not - if not true than this means nothing. But if it IS true - it is a dynamic).

No chance he signs for above 12.5M$ based on the above.
Maybe if he plays the season through and has a FANTASTIC season - he can get 12.5M$+. but right now, not a chance.

Exactly buddy, the dude wants to get
p$$d. I'm thinking the Leafs are trying to lowball him

This and I'll add besides being drafted first over all and being called generational ( a word that gets thrown around way too much these days) what has he done? Laine's stats are pretty much the same is he being touted as much? Plenty of players are putting up same or better stats ( Barzal) is anyone else being talked about getting 12.5 plus??? Mathews is a good player but he's not the best player in league people need to stop until he proves it.

HE does want to get paid. However it doesn't mean he'd be willing to sign an offer sheet or force the leafs hand. He doesn't deserve mcdavid money and he probably won't get mcdavid money because he hasn't produced as good as him. The only comparable to him is eichel so it's more likely he gets 11.5
