This and I'll add besides being drafted first over all and being called generational ( a word that gets thrown around way too much these days) what has he done? Laine's stats are pretty much the same is he being touted as much? Plenty of players are putting up same or better stats ( Barzal) is anyone else being talked about getting 12.5 plus??? Mathews is a good player but he's not the best player in league people need to stop until he proves it.

Everything is not about stats. Matthews is a significantly more valuable player than Laine will ever be.

Let me guess because he's a centre? Thats partially true however Mathews though a centre doesn't distribute the puck like one. Regardless there are other centre's in league that are out producing him right now. To name a few 25 and under McDavid, Mackinnion, Barzal and then a few producing around same level Kuznetsov, William Karlsson, Seguin, Barkov. Theres more but you get the idea. Would you consider giving 12.5 per to any of them if answer no which is my answer why Mathews?? He might get there as he's been in league only 2 years but he's not yet and no guarantee he will.

What are you talking about? He’s an RFA. Toronto is the only team he can sign with, Leafs have all the leverage.

McDavid is in another tier to Matthews - I view Matthews around the same tier as Eichel (though slightly better). Anyone who watches these 2 regularly without homer glasses on would see this.

My guess is AM34 signs 8 years, 11 million or so. Perhaps another 0.5 if it's a year later.

HE does want to get paid. However it doesn't mean he'd be willing to sign an offer sheet or force the leafs hand. He doesn't deserve mcdavid money and he probably won't get mcdavid money because he hasn't produced as good as him. The only comparable to him is eichel so it's more likely he gets 11.5

McDavid deserves more than McDavid money. $12.5M x 8 would be a fair deal for Matthews, especially since it kicks in next year and the cap will be higher.

12.5x8 wouldn't be fair for Matthews because he isn't 2.5 million dollars better than eichel. THE CAP is only going up by 2.5 million or so, so a .5 million or 1 raise seems more reasonable than 12.5. As for the mcdavid contracts, he took a Discount so why wouldn't Matthews take one ? He is on a better team after all. He is more prone to talking one that mcdavid was.
